Tell us about Alibi II: Nard’s Revenge. Alibi II is the sequel to Alibi I. In Alibi I, we venture into the life of Daisy Mae Fothergill, a young, naïve stripper who is asked to prove an alibi for $2,000. She takes the money but doesn’t get through in court. In Alibi II we start right back in the courtroom, but this time we venture into the life of Bernard Guess aka Nard, who has been sentenced to prison and wants to get revenge on Daisy for not giving the statement she wanted was pa. And for the most part, even in Alibi II, the bottom line is the first chapter of Alibi I and the night in question when the murders first took place. And what I love most about this sequel is that it shows you the full circle of a man’s life and the full scheme of my characters’ lives. This book is a ic spin-off based on the murders that occur in the first chapter of book one.
Sounds like we should read Alibi I first. I would definitely advise reading Alibi I first just to be informed of the past, present and possible future lives of these characters.

Almost every article about you says that your books can reach readers that other authors can’t. Who are these readers and what appeals to them in your books? I think it’s amazing and remarkable! I feel blessed that my stories resonate in the hearts of many. Readers often develop a strong connection to each piece. People stop me all the time to shake my hand and pat my back to comment on the colorful characters, affiliation, and penetrating raw truth of my stories. They share their encouragement and tell me not to stop writing. Some say I’m gifted, others say I’m a legend.
Do you feel the burden of often being seen as the voice of a certain group of people? Or do you need to get that out of your head and focus on writing only the best stories you can? My uncle is Georgie Woods. If you google Dick Clark and Georgie Woods and watch Dick Clark’s video, he says that my uncle was a “voice for the people.” And I’m glad to be looked at in a similar way. Being a voice can never be a burden. It’s an honor and certainly doesn’t burden me.
You supposedly write “Urban Fiction”. What do you think of the term? Is it Ghettoizing African American Writers? Well, that’s really difficult. On the one hand, I don’t think the use of the term urban fiction is the problem. I think urban has to do with everything that moves, being centralized, city life, the sphere of everything, and I think urban is cool, and so are my books – very cool, smooth, right what it takes to define and reflect the urban experience. I sincerely believe that each author’s work speaks for itself. On the other se of the coin, I believe urban fiction has acquired a bad reputation in certain communities that isolates me as a writer.
Her books have sometimes faced the same criticisms as hip-hop: liberal use of the N-word and possible corruption by young black people. What’s your reaction to that? I don’t think a book can spoil a person any more than television, movies or video games. I believe parental guance is necessary for my books. There are young girls and young men who read my books and as teenagers are still developing people they should be given proper guance. However, because I lived in downtown West Philadelphia, I had my daughter read True to the Game when she was 13. I thought it would help her understand what she should and shouldn’t do by using the characters in the book’s lessons and conveying their experiences as examples of what not to happen to you. I believe my books created a genre, created a market, created readers, created a niche for independent publishing, created a blueprint, but most of all my books created dreams that have come true for me and many others. Some people disapprove of other people’s dreams. That’s all I have to say about it.
Speaking of dreams come true, they’re famous for having sold over 300,000 books independently. How d you do that and why d you dece to give that up and sign with a traditional publisher? By the time I accepted the big publishing deal, I had already sold over a million books on my own. Part of me genuinely believed that I had achieved everything I could at this level and that it was time for bigger and better endeavors. In 2005 and 2006 I was circulating over 200,000 books a year, which means a lot of independent work. I gave birth to two sons back to back: one in 2004 and one in 2005 while living in NJ and working day and night in offices in the Empire State Building. Just the traffic in and out of town motivated me to want to make my life easier and simpler, and I felt like it was time to let go of the books and that the levels of distribution were going to be massive. While becoming a writer for a major publisher, I ran Teri Woods Publishing.
