‘B Positive’ Star, Terrence Terrell Discusses His Role as Eli and the Importance of Kidney Donations

Pin Share Reddit Share Email 0 Shares

CBS’ new comedy, B Positive, took off in 2020 and will continue to bring some hearty laughs in 2021. Created by Marco Pennette, the show premiered on November 5, 2020 and reflects a powerful yet playful story and cast of characters.

B Positive stars Thomas Middleditch as Drew, a divorced father in need of a kidney transplant, and Annaleigh Ashford as Gina, Drew’s quirky kidney donor and former high school sweetheart.

Also starring multi-talented Kether Donohue as Gabby, Gina’s best friend with many jobs who loves to party, Sara Rue as Julia, Drew’s ex-wife, and Izzy G. as Maddie, Drew and Julia’s daughter.

Terrence Terrell plays the character Eli, a high-energy retired football player who befriends Drew while on dialysis.

Terrell is an Emmy Award-winning actor best known for his roles on Modern Family, Giants and Criminal Minds.

He is also the author of the critically acclaimed books Blacky and The SHES.

BGN was able to chat with Terrell about his role as Eli, his favorite moments on the show, and the larger meaning behind the show’s focus on kidney transplants and healthcare. Terrell shed a bright light on the importance of B Positive’s message and how Eli brings something truly special to the cast.

Terell’s favorite part about playing Eli

“He’s the part of you that you don’t like to show off, like the part that brags and looks in the mirror like, ‘Yeah I look good, this outfit is going to kill her.’ So, Eli, with his confidence and his arrogance – I can do it on camera and I won’t be judged for it. He’s a Superbowl superstar — he’s that part of you that you just don’t like showing, but everyone has an ego thing.”

Terrell explains his personality in comparison to Elis

“I think we have some similarities because he is very caring and his personality will come out even more to show the caring in him.

“He will be a bit more mindful as the season progresses. So I feel like Eli’s a part of me in terms of his vulnerability and how he’s very caring, but also the part of me just before you race and need to get upset, like, let’s go, let’s go, let’s go! He’s my alter ego in real life.

“My full name is Terrence Terrell Davis, but I call him Terrence Terrell because it fits my alter ego, so Eli is like my alter ego.”

Terrell on what makes Eli a good friend of Drew

“He’s a good friend of Drew’s because I feel like Eli had to climb up through a lot of different things in his life in his past, so Drew reminds Eli of his younger self. So he’s like the little brother he never had. Eli’s on the lookout for Drew, and like I said, as the season progresses, episodes 8-9, you really see Eli taking Drew’s hand and trying to guide him a little bit more. He really is the big brother that Drew never had.”

Terrell explains why not being able to play soccer is hard for Eli

“Football is a very aggressive sport. When soccer players get injured, and I have a lot of friends who are actually professional soccer players, when they get injured you often don’t see on the sidelines that they’re getting a chance. You get a needle, shoot it up and walk right out.

“Even now, many of them, even though they’re retired, have to have steroid shots in their sides and other things because of injuries.

“Eli cannot play football again due to health reasons and being on dialysis. There’s a lot of things I’m learning on this show, even if you get a kidney transplant, the kidney literally has a guarantee of it.

“It could be maybe the rest of your life or 5 to 6 years or less depending on your lifestyle. In order for Eli to actually live and stay healthy if he gets the kidney transplant or whatever happens, he needs to be extra, extra careful because putting the helmet on won’t do the same for him.

Terrell on the importance of B Positive’s focus on kidney health and transplantation

“Hopefully we’ll educate a lot of viewers so we actually get more information about kidney donation or just organ donation. You know, some people are afraid that if they check it [and get into an accident], if they just check that little box on your driver’s license, no one will try to save them because they’re an organ donor.

“That’s the joke in the south. People will say, “Don’t check the box — if you do, they won’t save you.” So I feel like this show is going to open so many doors to being more caring, to yourself and everyone around you to educate about organ donation”.

Terrell shares his favorite episode so far

“Favorite episode right now? So many good things are coming my way, I try not to give too much away.

“My favorite episode right now would be episode 8. I think that’s the episode where we can actually get out of dialysis and go into Drew’s world and to his house, so there’s going to be a lot of vulnerable moments and in episode 8 we’re still going to be each other.” come closer.”

Terrell’s final thoughts for BGN

“Once again the show is entertaining but at the same time it will educate you and everyone around you to just care and help and reach out and have understanding of everything that’s happening today and really just try looking for one Another.

“If you can help someone out a little, even if it’s just screening them, especially during these times, or get educated and see if you’re a match for someone for a kidney donation.”

Season 1, Episodes 1-6 of B Positive is available to stream for free on CBS All Access. More episodes will be released later in 2021.

In the meantime, it’s a good time to catch up with Terrell as Eli and learn more about the importance of kidney donation while having some fun laughs with these playful characters.
