‘The Fallout’ Ending Explained HBO Max’s School Shooting Drama Ends on a Gut Punch

Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Fallout on HBO Max. Hopefully you knew that when you clicked this, but just in case.

Unfortunately, school shootings have become a regular occurrence in the United States in recent decades. Far too many teenagers live in fear that a gunman will murder them and their classmates every time they go to school. But as the world watches on for a week or so after every horrific shooting, the news crews eventually go home and the students and their families deal with the emotional fallout.

It’s the aftermath that writer/director Megan Park anticipates in her new film The Fallout, which airs today on HBO Max. The drama stars Jenna Ortega as a high school student named Vada Cavell who, while not physically injured, overcomes the emotional trauma of a school shooting. Despite the sobering topic, the film is filled with a surprising lightness. But when it comes to the ending of The Fallout, the film delivers an emotional gut punch that will leave viewers reeling.

If you just watched The Fallout on HBO Max and are dealing with that ending, read on for The Fallout plot summary and Fallout ending explanation.

WHAT IS FALLOUT ABOUT? THE FALLOUT PLOT SUMMARY:

High schooler Vada Cavell (Jenna Ortega) is a laid-back girl with a good life. She shops for Starbucks with her best friend Nick (Will Ropp) before school, she talks to her younger sister Amelia (Lumi Pollack) about getting her first period, and she bangs on about her school’s Instagram influencer, Mia ( Maddie Ziegler), funny because she’s contoured in the tag.

Then comes a terrifying event that makes it difficult for Vada to be so relaxed: a shooting at her school that kills an unspecified number of her classmates. Vada is trapped in the school toilet when it happens, huddled in a cubicle with Mia, the influencer, and eventually a blood-soaked student named Quinton (Niles Fitch). They try not to cry too loud as they hear the unbearable sounds of gunshots and screams and wonder if this moment will be their last.

Everyone in the bathroom survives, but to say Vada is traumatized is an understatement. After the shooting, she has nightmares and feels numb. While her best friend Nick becomes an activist overnight, Vada doesn’t feel compelled to march or influence her representatives. Instead, she’s attracted to Mia, the influencer, and the two forge an unlikely friendship after something so horrible connected them. Mia’s parents are rich and always out of town, so the girls spend their days drinking wine and smoking weed in Mia’s huge, empty house.

Vada doesn’t feel like going back to school, but eventually she does, under pressure from her mother. Even then, she can’t bring herself to enter the bathroom where she hid from the shooter at school, so she forces herself to hold it. She makes it to the end of the day, when on the way home she steps on a can and wets herself. The next day, she takes ecstasy at school to self-medicate and ends up with ink all over her face falling down the school stairs. It’s clear she’s falling apart at the seams even as she tries her best to hold on to those cool girl vibes. She tells her parents she’s fine, and she tells her therapist (Shailene Woodley) that she’s just “a very private person.”

But she withdraws from her family, snaps at her sister, and spends more and more time with Mia — eventually sleeping with her. She’s gone all night and her mother is upset. (Her usual alibi that she is staying the night at Nick’s is broken when Nick calls her mother looking for her.) She tries to kiss Quinton and he rejects her. She feels that everyone in her life has turned against her.

WHAT DOES THE FALLOUT ENDING EXPLAIN?

Vada’s sister, Amelia, confronts her in the middle of the night and tearfully apologizes. Amelia believes that Vada is mad at her because Amelia called Vada just before the shooting, which caused her to leave the classroom and put her in greater danger. Vada realizes how much she has hurt her sister by withdrawing and it is a breakthrough moment.

After a slightly cheesy, cathartic scream-to-the-wild session with her father, Vada visits Mia. She’s been avoiding her since they had sex, and Mia thinks she’s mad at her. Vada finds Mia passed out in her sauna surrounded by empty wine bottles. Mia admits she’s scared to leave her house, but plans to go back to dance class because she knows it will do her good.

Vada makes things right with her mother and has a groundbreaking session with her therapist. In the film’s final scene, Vada waits for Mia outside of her dance class, and the two have an easy, somewhat flirtatious text exchange. Vada seems happy. Then she gets a message push on her cell phone: 12 students have been killed in a school shooting in another state. Vada stares at her phone in disbelief and then starts hyperventilating. The screen goes white as we listen to the sounds of Vada’s panic attack.

phew It’s an ending that suggests that as Vada begins to heal from her trauma, she is still suffering greatly and may always carry the trauma with her. She probably needs treatment for PTSD, which doesn’t go away in a matter of months. But she has her family to support her and her friends and hopefully Vada will be fine. Someday.

The Fallout (2022) – Review Summary (with Spoilers)

After a school shooting, we see different ways in which those affected deal with it as they try to create a new normal.

Director(s) Megan Park Written By Megan Park Release 1/27/2022 Where to watch HBO Max Genre(s) Drama, Romance, Young Adult, LGBT Duration 1 hour 36 minutes Content Rating rated R Cast Vada Jenna Ortega Mia Maddie Ziegler Quinton Niles Fitch Nick Will Ropp Amelia Lumi Pollack Anna Shailene Woodley

Summary of the film

After six minutes of absolute terror, Vada, Mia, Quinton and so many others were deeply traumatized. For Quinton, he lost his brother in the shooting. Mia? Her desire to leave the house, the ability to sleep, was stolen from her. Then vada? Is it her friendship with Nick, her relationship with her sister Amelia and her parents’ trust in her? Things went haywire when she started either cutting people off, experimenting with different ways of dealing with life, or looking for new people and relationships.

Cast and Character Guide

Please note: This is not a complete list of all cast members.

vada

16-year-old Vada, when we meet her, is her little sister’s best friend, a bright kid who always has fascinating questions in class and is Nick’s go-to person when life is at stake. But after the shooting? She’s stunned, often in bed, but thanks to Mia, that could change.

billion

An accomplished dancer whose career has meant she doesn’t have too many close friends, Mia not only bonds with Vada through trauma, but forges a genuine friendship. One that makes it that little bit easier for her dads to get away, especially since they’re in no rush to return, even after what their daughter is going through.

Quinton

Before the shooting, Quinton, like Vada, was an older brother. However after that? His quiet, thoughtful, and sweet brother was dead, and he had to deal with people who seemed uncomfortable with his brother’s existence, or now his absence.

Nick

After the shooting, Nick became an activist, much like David Hogg of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. A grueling task he felt compelled to do after experiencing the scariest moments of his life.

amelia

Amelia is Vada’s little sister who adores her sister and hates the distance caused by Vada’s trauma.

ann

Anna is a therapist that Vada is forced to attend in order to stay away from school longer than her parents would like.

Other notable information

Reason(s) for rating the film: School shooting (sounds of gunshots), blood (no bodies visible), swearing

Like the filming of Stoneman Douglas, The Fallout took only 6 minutes to shoot per character in the film.

highlights

Amelia and Vada’s relationship

The most beautiful thing about this film was the relationship between Amelia and Vada. As an older sister, Vada was Amelia’s closest friend and the love between them is beyond sweet but emotional. Because if it’s not Amelia freaking out and calling Vada during her period, it’s a scene near the end where Amelia expresses how she feels about Vada pulling away from her and expresses why she thinks that. At that moment I broke down. It was the most powerful scene of the entire film, even though Amelia wasn’t directly part of the moment that changed everything.

The shift in Vada and Nick’s friendship

The trauma reaction is different for everyone. Nick saw it as a call to action, and for Vada, she decided to switch off and relax. Getting both normalizes that not everyone is made or built to become an activist after something important happens in their life. This is a remarkable and beautiful thing to see, as there is a sad expectation that you should march, protest and make your voice heard solely because of your background or experience.

However, not everyone is built for it. Some people don’t want to address the worst that has happened or could happen, inviting more trauma, hate, and potentially scarring moments. Some people just want to figure out how to close this chapter and start a new one, and there shouldn’t be anything wrong with that.

That’s not to say that Vada’s lack of desire to be an activist damaged her relationship with Nick, as it was more feelings of abandonment but also a lack of empathy on both sides. Something that helps shed light on Quinton when speaking to Vada.

Vada’s Desire To Trauma Bond with Mia and Quinton

For many people, healing can begin when they find someone, or even a group, who understands. To know you’re not alone, fate, god, bad luck, what have you, didn’t just pick you to screw it up, it just happened, there’s some comfort in that. So when you see Vada bond with Mia, to the point where their intimacy became physical, just like Quinton, you get it.

When you feel as numb as Vada does, it can be difficult to find people who will bring you joy, calm, perhaps mania, and comfort in your vulnerability. And if you lose that feeling once you’re away from them, you want to secure that relationship because it’s your only escape.

I mean, Vada has tried other avenues, like doing drugs and drinking, but she’s not that kind of girl – that’s not Euphoria. What Vada needed were people she didn’t know before, who didn’t remind her of the girl she used to be, but who could know, love and accept this new you. You know, so maybe she could come over and start loving that person too.

It’s infinite

The ending of this film is traumatic for Vada. As she adjusts to a new normal, another shootout ensues, forcing her to realize there is no such thing as normal. Well, admittedly, it doesn’t seem to be anywhere near her, and her sister’s life is not threatened. But even if you’re physically separated from the event, that doesn’t mean there isn’t an emotional trigger to remind you of how six minutes turned 16 years upside down in friendships, family relationships and more.

The shooting and the shooter are hardly focused on it

Do we want to know why the shooting happened and more about the shooter? Yes. However, as the multitude of school films we have seen has shown, it is very easy to infantilize or inadvertently humanize someone who has committed an act of violence and create ways to justify their actions. If not, do the kind of work that excuses their actions.

So you have to applaud The Fallout for not even seeing the boy who shot the school and her name is allowed to be pronounced less than 5 times. Because it’s not about him. It’s about what he did and the people whose lives it changed forever. Because in the long run, they’re the ones who matter, who really have to deal with the BS it causes and either potentially collapse or be forced into action.

low points

The therapy sessions with Anna

Part of me thinks that maybe we should note that not all therapy scenes should lead to emotional breakthroughs? That therapy scenes shouldn’t result in quotes that you recite your whole life except on social media and sometimes therapy is just a boring conversation.

But I do not know. It’s hard not to want and expect more given what we see throughout the film. Never mind, with the relationship Anna and Vada originally had, you could see that something was coming of it. But maybe one of the points was that therapy, while a useful tool, isn’t always the best way to heal people mentally and emotionally?

on the fence

It might lose you a bit after 45 minutes

When Vada starts to get out of hand and gets involved with drugs and goes a little crazy, the movie might lose you a little. It’s in those moments that you see a beaten road, and as Ortega tries to put her own spin on it, you’re probably wondering if you’ve gotten behind the best parts of the film and when you consider how Vada was written before that moment of the descent has begun.

Luckily that’s not the case, but during the 10+ minutes of seeing Vada out of your head, you’ll be deeply troubled.

In total

Our rating: Positive (worth seeing)

Jenna Ortega is phenomenal in The Fallout. As shown, every single highlight affects her character, and while it’s so hard to gauge what’s more of a breakout role, it’s at least fair to say that her role as Vada is one that’s put on a pedestal. It will be one of the roles to show what she is capable of as an actress, especially in dramatic roles, not to mention a leading lady who is tasked with carrying a film and giving as best she can from her co-stars .

Hence the positive rating. While the therapy sessions stayed shallow and the obligatory drug rush bit did the same, everything else about The Fallout delivers an emotional experience that avoids making the act of a school shooting too sensational, instead focusing on those left behind.

The Fallout (2022) recap/summary (with spoilers) Who is this for? Those who want to watch a teenager go through something without partying, sex, and drugs being their main options, and rather focus on making new connections to feel alive again. Highlights The shootout and shooter barely focus on the fact that it’s infinite Vada’s desire for trauma Bonding with Mia and Quinton The shift in Vada and Nick’s friendship Amelia and Vada’s relationship is disputed The therapy sessions with Anna It might lose you for a while, 45 minutes later 81
