Mangena was born on August 25, 2001 in Manchester, England to Nkosana and Nobukhosi Mangena. He briefly stayed with his grandmother Nita Mangena in Luveve, Bulawayo. He eventually went to England where he lives with his parents and little brother.[1]
He was heartbroken over the death of a teacher that inspired him to sing on The Voice. In April 2018, Donel learned that his elementary school principal, Elizabeth Kenny, had died of breast cancer. He told the Daily Star Sunday: “The day I left primary school she said, ‘You’re going to be something big … you’re going to do well with your singing … use your voice’.” Southampton-born Donel had hoped she would be proud of his success on The Voice. He added: “It was a shock to hear that she passed away. You wouldn’t expect it to happen. I was hoping to go back this semester and share that with her.”[2]

19-year-old singer/songwriter Donel is making 2021 a hit with his three-part EP African Boy Pt. 1, which was released on April 9th on Warner Records. The EP, his first as a signed artist, brings fans Donel’s unique pop vision with a sweet mix of Top 40, R&B and Afropop sounds.
When IMPRINT asked about the release of this EP, Donel said, “It went well, yes! It’s like my first project so go ahead… Because I was used to releasing singles and now I’m signed to Warner Records. It’s just nice for me to be able to put out a little work that people can listen to and appreciate what kind of artist I am and just introduce myself to the whole scene, the industry and basically the world. ”
But this wouldn’t be the first time the world has seen Donel. At the age of 16, Donel pushed himself to audition for The Voice UK. In the show’s seventh series, Donel was mentored by founding and mainstay member of the Black Eyed Peas, will.i.am, and ended up coming in second place on the series.
For Donel, being 16 and being in the spotlight wasn’t difficult at all. He said: “I remember having this mindset, I’m going to go out there and smash it! That’s it… [I thought] how can I go out there and shine? I [want] to give these people a show…something they’ve never seen before.
Speaking of working with will.i.am, Donel said, “Ah, it was crazy! It was a great relationship. He has been very supportive of me and my career. To be able to talk to him every day and text him and he message me on Instagram… he believed in me and was a big [part] of the [journey].”
His time with The Voice UK didn’t go unnoticed, in fact it caught the eye of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
“It was crazy… I was in college… My dad called me… He calls me Donny, so he said, ‘Donny, you’re not going to believe me, I just got a call from someone and you were made the Queen’s birthday invited !'”
Reflecting on his being named a ‘Star of the Future’ and performing at the Queen’s 92nd Birthday Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, Donel said it was a very cool, amazing part of his life.
But Donel isn’t stopping anytime soon. For him this is just the beginning. Its reintroduction to the world with Warner Records delivers an EP that will transport you and everyone you’re listening with to a warm, summery time full of good vibes and energy.
What’s next? Well, Donel says there is a second part of the EP that fans should keep an eye out for. His closing remarks… “I want to show more of Africa. I want to make it international, I want to make the sound international. I want everyone to hear it and I want everyone to have fun…that’s the vibe.”
