Who Is the Happy Hippie Car Collector

Jason Crosby

May 24, 2022 3 minute read

Tim Schmidt’s collection is valued at millions and is the envy of car fans worldwide. But who is Tim Schmidt and how did he get his reputation as a classic car? Who is Tim Schmidt and how did he get the reputation of being a car collector and influencer?

If you’d rather be a little happier yourself, try using our app to save money on your car insurance, as thousands of people have already done.

Tim Schmidt has roots in the automotive industry

Tim Schmidt stands out as someone who has been in the automotive industry practically since birth. As Market Realist explains, Tim Schmidt’s father founded ABC Group, an auto parts company that helped Tim develop his own passion for cars.

Tim then became an avid car collector with a small fortune in valuable vehicles. As a Canadian citizen, Tim divides his time between Canada and Florida.

Something of a social media guru and investor, Tim Schmidt is a car collector with a net worth of around $20 million in vehicles. However happy he may be as a hippie, this Canadian auto guru has not been without his fair share of misfortune.

A fire destroyed several Tim Schmidt collector cars

Tim Schmidt made headlines as a car collector in 2019 when some of his vehicles caught fire at his home in Rio Vista, Florida. The Sun Sentinel noted that some of the vehicles in the fire included a Bentley, a Tesla, a Harley Davidson motorcycle and several jet skis and golf carts.

Despite losing so many vehicles to the fire, Happy Hippie’s perennial car collector Tim Schmidt simply expressed his shock on social media, stating that he and his wife are doing fine.

However, that doesn’t mean the fire was small. According to the newspaper, around 50 firefighters were needed to bring the fire under control. The cause of the fire was not listed in the report, but there are many common hazards or random events that can cause home fires.

What kind of vehicles does Tim Schmidt have as a car collector?

Because of the way Tim Schmidt divides his time between his two homes, he didn’t lose all of his vehicles in the 2019 fire. Luckily, Schmidt keeps his Bugatti Chiron and McLaren P1 on his 200-acre Canadian ranch, where he regularly shares his growing collection with fans on his Instagram account: @hapyhipi.

Tim’s other vehicles, 35 in total, include Teslas, Lamborghinis and Ferraris – and he seems to be most interested in newer luxury cars and supercars, as opposed to classic vehicles.

FORT LAUDERDALE — At least four luxury cars, including a Bentley and a Tesla, burned during a raging fire in Fort Lauderdale’s clayey Rio Vista neighborhood, officials said.

The home is owned by a car collector who splits his time between South Florida and Canada and regularly posts about his cars on his Instagram account called “hapyhipi.” The entire ground floor of his home is specially designed for up to a dozen cars, according to online reports.

As day broke on Wednesday, the extensive damage to the home became apparent: almost every opening was charred and burned-out debris littered the property.

No one was injured in the fire on Tuesday evening. Residents of the two-story home on the 1600 block of Southeast 12th Court appeared to be out of town, said Battalion Chief Stephen Gollan, spokesman for the Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.

“There are a lot of exotic cars in this garage,” said Gollan from the scene, counting at least four.

The home is valued at more than $1.7 million, according to Broward County property records, and belongs to Timothy Schmidt, a luxury car enthusiast and collector who also resides in Ontario, Canada.

At 8:52 p.m., calls came in reporting the fire, Gollan said.

“That was a very, very, very heavy fire,” he said at around 9:40 p.m. “Now we just put out the fire. It was quite a large fire.”

Additional forces had to be called in. About 50 firefighters were on site when the fire was out.

When Schmidt heard about the fire, he took to social media to express his “shock.”

“We’re fine, we just have broken hearts,” the post reads.

It also showed that among the vehicles burned were luxury vehicles, including a Tesla, a Harley Davidson, two golf carts and two jet skis.

According to the post, the Lamborghini, which is normally kept in Fort Lauderdale, is currently in Canada.

As recently as February, Schmidt was featured in a Florida Fine Cars profile of his car collection, specifically his $3.8 million Bugatti Chiron, which was on display at the Cars & Coffee Palm Beach auto show in January.

Schmidt has been described as a seasonal resident who owns a two-bedroom home with a 12-car garage in Fort Lauderdale and owns 35 collector cars. Some cars are in Florida and others on his 500-acre ranch in Ontario, the profile says.

The Schmidt family made their millions manufacturing plastic auto parts through their global ABC group of companies. His father, Mike Schmidt, founded the company in 1969 and his mother, Helga, took over after his father’s death in 2009, a Canadian publication, the King Weekly Sentinel reported in a 2014 family profile.

Staff writer Johnny Diaz contributed to this report.

Florida Garage Fire Engulfs Tesla, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Porsche, and More

Watching your car burn down, even if it’s just a Honda Civic, is a painful experience. Imagine tuning in to the nightly news and watching in utter horror as a good chunk of a car collection you’ve assembled over the years burns until only the hood ornaments and wheel rims remain. Unfortunately, that’s what happened to Canadian car collector Tim Schmidt after a fire broke out in his sprawling Florida garage.

Tim Schmidt, who goes by the Instagram handle @hapyhipi, is the son of a Canadian auto parts company and car collector with an impressive roster of exotic and classic automobiles. Schmidt divides his time between a home in Florida and a home in Canada. Most of his vast collection is at his Canadian residence – including a Bugatti Chiron and a McLaren P1 – but Schmidt kept a number of luxury cars at his Florida home.

At the time of the fire, Schmidt had, among other things, a Tesla Model X, a Bentley Mulsanne, a Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe, a custom Nissan GT-R, a custom Porsche 911 Turbo S, a Volkswagen Thing such as jet skis, golf carts and motorcycles in the housed in garage. According to the local fire brigade who arrived at the scene, the fire started in the garage and spread quickly and intensely. “This was a very, very, very serious fire,” said Chief Stephen Gollan, the Fort Lauderdale Fire Department spokesman, speaking to The South Florida Sun Sentinel. The call came at 8:52 p.m. local time and was not under control until 21:40. Gollan stated that additional crews had to be called in, a total of 50 firefighters on site to put out the raging fire.

Firefighters haven’t found the cause of the fire, but after Schmidt posted about the blaze on Instagram – and said he and his wife are fine – commenters immediately began questioning whether it was the Tesla Model X that started the fire. A number of high-profile Tesla autoignitions have surfaced around the world in recent months. Tesla takes these incidents seriously and recently released an over-the-air update for all Model S and Model X vehicles to prevent such occurrences.
