Tobias Truvillion talks career and empire

Interviewer: In your new film Cigarette Soup you play a soldier fighting in Afghanistan. Did you have any special military training for the role?

Tobias Truvillion: Yes, actually. We had advisors on set that were in the military and were over there in Afghanistan and the Middle East and they gave us tips on what it’s like to be on duty and they gave us advice on technical things and what it was like was like the camaraderie to be one of the guys. They spent so much time together, and [we learned] technical things like how you would roll as a unit when entering a building and how to wear all the stuff that these young men have to wear all the time when they’re fighting for our country . It was a wonderful experience picking the brains of these guys. And we shot it in a month and spending so much time in a bunker, even though we weren’t actually at war, you really got a sense of brotherhood and what it might have been like to be over there and in the real war to fight . Some of the stories I got from some of the guys were life changing experiences. Some of their best buddies didn’t make it back.

Interviewer: Wow. Was that quite emotional for you?

Tobias Truvillion: That was it. It was really. A big concern for me was that they see us perform for them. You have been honored.

Interviewer: So what can you say about your character Monti and what he goes through in the film?

Tobias Truvillion: At first glance, Monti is this robust, straightforward guy, the muscle of the unit. He carries one of the larger artillery machine guns and is the type of guy who really doesn’t play games. But once you get past the first shift, you get a chance to really get to know him, and you realize he’s just another young man who’s not got it all and is fighting for his country, and at some point in the movie he realizes that , if he doesn’t open up [to the journalist embedded in the unit] and tell his story, it may never be told; he may never have a chance to have his voice heard. So when we get to that point in the film, you get to know who he really is.

Interviewer: Is this guy anything like you in real life or was it fairly new for you to play a guy like that?

Tobias Truvillion: I played a lot of sports growing up and football is a team sport and being a team player is the type of person I am. I know how to lead, I know how to follow and I might even be coachable. When I got into the unit and played Marines, it kind of reminded me of the feeling in the locker room, the camaraderie, the brotherhood between the guys and stuff like that. So there are elements of me in there, the camaraderie and the desire to get the job done and participate in the mission ahead. I could see myself there. But I’m more of a sociable person and Monti is more reserved. He kind of rolls around with a chip on his shoulder. I’m the complete opposite of that. I am more open and free and like to talk to people. Monti was a little more withdrawn. But there were little elements and bits in there.

Interviewer: Would you say it’s more difficult to play a character who is completely different from you, or a character who is very similar to you?

Tobias Truvillion: Well I want to do my best in every role and be honest about it. Even the role I’m playing now on Empire, I’m playing a man who they say is “at rock bottom” which means he’s gay. And being a straight male, that was a different track and territory for me. For me as an actor, we always want to have characters and materials that challenge us; It should be something that scares you a bit because we’re artists. So characters and stories that make you a little bit nervous, that scare you a little bit, that’s where you want to be. That’s the kind of work I want to do. I challenge myself and find interesting ways to play these characters, even if sometimes it’s not what it says on the surface or on paper, it might read a certain way but try to go underneath and figuring out the different dimensions of the character who they really are is a challenge. And playing characters that are outside of my comfort zone or not who I am at all, that’s the work I want to do. This is the work I am doing now and this is the work I will continue to do.

Interviewer: In the world of soap operas, fans sometimes get confused and think that the actor is actually the character. Has this happened to you?

Tobias Truvillion: Oh yes! When I played Vincent Jones in One Life to Live, my character wasn’t really a villain, but some of the storylines gave him a bad rap for doing some sneaky things to some of the other characters, so that used to happen to me. People would come up to me and say things like, “Don’t do that anymore!” or “You can’t treat Cristian [David Fumero] like that!” [Laughs] People love their TV, they love their content, they love the stories and the shows. They’re invested in them, and sometimes they blur the lines when they see you on the street and they think you’re the actual character and it’s like, ‘No! That’s not me, that’s not me!” [Laughs]

Interviewer: Do Empire fans do that too? Or is it just the soap fans?

Tobias Truvillion: Yes, that also happens with Empire and sometimes people are not sure what to say. They will come up to me and address me as if I were a D-Major and I must tell them in a friendly and polite manner, “I’m Tobias. The character I play is D major.” But most of the time people know you’re playing a character. And I’ve been a working actor my whole adult life and people know my work so sometimes when they see me they recognize me as an actor. So it’s a bit of both. Some people know me from Empire and they’re like, “Okay, this guy’s definitely not gay and he’s playing D Major,” and they’re like, “You’re doing a great job.” But there are also people who’re like, “Man, he’s doing such a great job, so I’m not sure – is he really gay?!” [Laughs] But it’s our job to play these characters as well as we can, so I think if you do that, they will People invest and believe in it, and that’s what you want.

Interviewer: What do you think you are best known for: One Life to Live, Empire or something else?

Tobias Truvillion: I would say Empire. It is big. It’s the number one show in the world. They speak of 12 million people watching it every week. And it definitely changed my popularity tremendously. People may have known my face or they may not have known my name before, but now people say my name when I walk down the street. Or I’ll introduce myself and say, “Hi, my name is Tobias.” And they’ll say, “I know who you are!” [Laughs] And that’s really trippy for me! I mean, I’m just a regular guy; I’m from New York, I ride the subway, I teach in the schools and sometimes I show up in the stores, and when that happens, people are really blown away; they are overwhelmed that I stand with them. So Empire has had a strong impact.

Interviewer: I think it’s great that you still introduce yourself, even if you don’t have to give an introduction at all. That’s really cute.

Tobias Truvillion: Yes, my grandmother taught me manners.

Interviewer: That’s good! And I hope you remember it no matter how big you get. Speaking of which, your soap opera fans are wild and still following you and your career. How does it feel to know that they still care about you and follow you in your new projects?

Tobias Truvillion: Oh, it’s wonderful. Being on the soaps was great. I think of all the people I was working with back then and I look at them now and it’s like, David Fumero [ex-Cristian Vega] is on Power and Tika [Sumpter, ex-Layla Williamson] who it does wonderful things, and Renee Elise Goldsberry [ex-Evangeline Williamson] destroys the Broadway stage. I think of all my friends and they’re doing great things and thriving on other shows and other platforms. And the people who follow us and support us have been there all along. It feels so good and is a wonderful thing. They look forward to seeing you work and pursuing your career. That makes me happy and I am very grateful to them. Every once in a while I meet someone who says, “I remember you from the soaps!” But sometimes people get confused because I like to change into different characters and have different hair, and then when they put me in Empire or Law and Order or something, they’re like, “Oh yeahhhhhh, that was you on the soap opera!” So it’s a wonderful thing. Soap fans are so loyal and I’m so grateful for that. I actually was a few weeks ago at the Daytime Emmys! Just being with the world and the fans during the day and it was a wonderful experience. And it’s been a long time since I had seen so many people. Like my pal Lawrence Saint-Victor who was in The Bold and the Beautiful [as Carter Walton] and [former OLTL executive producer and current General Hospital executive producer] Frank Valentini; I need to talk to him. These people support me and I’m happy to support them. It felt good to during the day among the leu ten and hanging out with the fans again. It felt great.
