That’s the number and budget Courtney Ajinca, Lance Devereux and Tori Williams had at their disposal to bring the celebrations of stars (from Cynthia Bailey and LeBron James to star athletes) together in a way that couldn’t be done in Atlanta — a place — stands out where the parties don’t stop and everyone tries to outdo everyone else. It’s a number that can create the events you find on Pinterest boards and on Instagram Explore pages. Put simply, it makes dreams come true. But a big budget is not necessary to have your dream wedding. That’s why the trio of planners agreed to come together to create celebrity-inspired weddings for VH1’s latest series, My Celebrity Dream Wedding, with a budget of well under a quarter million. It was a challenge, but an “exciting challenge” that Devereux said they rushed to take on.
“It’s definitely outside the norm of what we’re used to working with,” he says. “We just have to get creative and use our partnerships and relationships to ensure we give these deserving couples the wedding they envision.”
The series follows the planners as they meet couples who want celebrity-inspired weddings on a budget and compete to realize their vision. Brides choose which planner they wish to lead, while the other two forgo assistant status and all work together to bring big ideas to fruition.
“The couples we work with deserve it so much and their stories are amazing,” says Williams. “It makes us harder to work together to pull off the weddings for them.”
“The couples who are touching their lives right now will see us weep with them and for them,” adds Ajinca. “Their stories are really touching.”
Also a treat for the star planners who get a chance to work together. “It was really a rewarding experience working with them. These are my siblings. It’s like family to me,” says Ajinca. Devereux adds: “We have to be problem solvers and find solutions, but it’s been great to have mutual support throughout this process where we step in and support each other to get through it.”
As far as viewers go, the ultimate treat, aside from the hilarious yet emotional episodes, is getting tips on how to add sparkle to your own wedding or general event for a fraction of the price. We asked Ajinca, Devereux and Williams to share their advice for people who want glitz and glamor without completely emptying their bank accounts. Take notes!
Use candles
“You can never go wrong with candles. You can actually go to the dollar store and pile up the different heights of these cylinder vases and you can fill them with water and you can put the candles anywhere on a table and it changes the look,” says Williams. “It doesn’t cost $10,000. It’s something you can do that’s really cheap, but it’s very effective. It’s very romantic and sets the right mood for your event.”
Set your background and go all out
“Make sure your background, that focal point, looks good,” says Ajinca. “Maximizing the impact in certain areas and then the other places, the photo areas where people are really going on Instagram and social media, maximizing it there and then everywhere else, can be more cost-effective.”

As well as highlighting a backdrop, Devereux says doing everything with certain parts of the space can also go a long way. “You may not have the budget to throw lavish decor around the room, but if you focus on points of impact, maybe just decorating a cake table or a dining table, people can still make the impact that way,” he says. “And while it’s not spread throughout the room, you save on the budget and give people a taste of what you want for your day.”
Turn your flowers over
Silk flowers are a special touch that when added to actual floral displays can help fill them out and add a luxurious look to any event. “It is good to combine it with fresh flowers. It helps you save so much,” says Williams. “The initial cost of investing in these flowers can get a little expensive, but over time you save because you can use them over and over again. Rule of thumb: If it’s high and people can’t touch it, then it’s fine. Some people don’t know the difference at all.”
Maximize your space
Instead of choosing two separate venues for the ceremony and reception, find the right venue where you can kill two birds with one stone. “Depending on the exact space you are using, using the same space for your ceremony and reception, if possible, can sometimes help you save money. Being able to transfer elements from one room to another or multipurpose elements within the room can save you budget on things like the need for chairs because you don’t have to rent multiple sets,” Devereux says. “You just have to make sure it’s conducive with the venue you choose because if not you could run into an increased budget just from the staffing to turn the space around in time. But multipurpose spaces can help you make an impact within budget for both the ceremony and reception.”

BOSSIP Sr. Content Director Janeé Bolden spoke to Courtney, Lance and Tori ahead of premiere night to find out a little more about what to expect from this brand new show.
After getting a sneak peek at the first episode, we had so much fun watching the three planners at work that we couldn’t help but wonder if their relationship was the result of the show together, or if the Show the result of their cooperation was a great relationship!
“I would say it’s a combination of both. Lance and I have known each other for about five years now,” Courtney told BOSSIP. “We worked together and we worked together at events and then we met Tori, it was like an instant chemistry. We all hit it off right away and from the moment we met we knew it was perfect.”
“I would agree,” Tori interjected. “They knew each other at first, but we met while taking the chemistry test in L.A. The chemistry between the three of us was amazing. One would have thought we had known each other for years. Besides, we’re all Scorpios!”
In each episode, Courtney, Lance and Tori meet a new deserving couple who share their vision for their dream wedding inspired by a lavish celebrity ceremony. After listening to the couple’s wishes and the budget they’re willing to pay, the three elite Atlanta-based wedding planners present their plans to the happy couple. After hearing all three plans, the brides choose their favorite planner to direct the production of their wedding, while the others are demoted to assistant status. The planners then work together to execute everything from the dream ceremony to the stunning reception.
Wedding planning during the pandemic has brought some pretty drastic changes for couples looking to tie the knot in 2020 and 2021, but the My Celebrity Dream Wedding crew says these trying times have simply called for a lot of creativity and flexibility and ultimately they have embraced many of the changes that have been made in the COVID era.
“I’m all about micro weddings,” Lance told BOSSIP. “This time has given us the opportunity to show people that just because you can’t have as many people as you originally wanted, the event can’t be as fabulous. It also doesn’t mean that love can’t be bigger. Sometimes when there are fewer people in the room the love is stronger because it’s more intimate, there’s a deeper connection, so I think it’s a couple’s experience in a way. When it comes to the show, we’re on the alert about COVID precautions and keeping everyone safe.”
“VH1 and Entertainment One have done such a great job of ensuring that we, as well as the couples and their guests, are protected through testing and mask-wearing. This is something I will definitely be introducing for my weddings. ‘ added Courtney.
My Celebrity Dream Wedding gives viewers tips on how to plan a million dollar wedding for a fraction of the price. The series’ lavish weddings are inspired by celebrities like Gabrielle Union & Dwyane Wade, Priyanka Chopra & Nick Jonas, NeNe & Gregg Leakes, Chance the Rapper & Kirsten Corley and more, with a twist.
“We also have a few more housewives that we’re going to feature on the show,” Courtney teased, “You’ll have to stay tuned because there’s a lot more to come this season.”
“We get along pretty well, we’re human, we bump our heads at times, but we love and respect each other and it’s not about us anyway, it’s about the brides,” Tori told BOSSIP. “The drama comes when I’m trying to pull off these million dollar weddings on these limited budgets. You’ll see me yell and swear a lot because I’m not particularly happy with a lot of these budgets, but we’re finding a way to make it work, at the end of the day.”
For any couples out there who couldn’t be selected for My Celebrity Dream Wedding, the planners said the biggest tip they could give couples looking to cut wedding costs is to cut their guest lists as lean as possible.
“People don’t really understand that the more guests you have, the more expensive your wedding is going to be,” Courtney told BOSSIP. “Like Lance said, with micro weddings you get more bang for your buck, but when people come and want 150-200 guests, you’re not going to make that much of a difference with your decorations, that’s going to go into groceries and things to make sure that your wedding runs smoothly.
