SUAVV: The typical question must be asked first. How did your career start?
Travis: I’ve been modeling for a few years and then someone asked me, hey, do you act? And even though I had no prior knowledge, I said yes. You never know where these things might take you, and if you never try, you’ll never know. The same person who asked me if I was okay with the role and I’ve loved her ever since. I wasn’t that good then, I mean everyone goes through their growth phase, but that’s how I started.
SUAVV: How was the modeling career, was it difficult to get started? Have you been detained in a specific area? How was it?
Travis: Getting into modeling was pretty easy. I started sort of doing this on my own and then being here in Georgia for work, it’s like the center for modeling and acting, so it was just a matter of time before someone came up to me and said, “Hey, do you want? to do a shoot” and I was sure that’s what I want to do, so let’s do it. One thing led to another and I started doing music videos and stuff like that, it just kind of went from there. Even in music videos I’ve still modeled, I’ve done some catwalks and Bronner brothers. Actually, the Bronner brothers really took me in, it really just kind of evolved for me. Everyone and their mom come to this hair show they have 3 over here. So my fan base grew, my popularity grew, my Instagram grew, my Facebook grew. Everything just grew out of those shows. Being there 8 hours a day a few days in a row 2 times a year, every year.
SUAVV: That’s pretty stupid. And those hours for that kind of growth… wow. The Bronner Brothers shows are big. What did you do at the shows?
Travis: It was beard products, men’s products, beard wash and things like that for companies like Uncle Jimmy’s. They would release designer products and I would model the products with a pose. Then the Uncle Jimmy line came out, I used those things, got my beard trimmed, got my beard washed, got styled with the product on stage.
SUAVV: So your beard allowed things to take off?
Travis: It has. Not at first because I didn’t always have a beard. But once I finally grew a beard, things started to get a little better.
SUAVV: Beards save lives LOL. What kind of jobs did you do while modeling before going into acting full-time?
Travis: Man, I worked in a warehouse for about 2 years, then I worked at Dick’s sporting goods warehouse for about 2 years. But while I was doing that I dabbled in modeling and when someone called me with a booking I was grateful. Most of the time it was free because I didn’t have a name for myself. I’ve been trying to come up with a name for myself, but when you come up you really can’t say, “Hey, you guys have to pay me because most of the time they’re going to be looking at you like, ‘uh, but who are you?'”. So, you really need to humble yourself, and I did, so I worked a little bit from 9 to 5. I’m not ashamed because you must be from somewhere. If you don’t pay those bills, you’ll be left without a home and never be able to study or practice your craft. Now I’m a full-time model and a full-time actor; that’s what i do, that’s how i eat, and that’s what pays the bills.
SUAVV: How does that feel? From warehouse jobs to surviving and now living and doing what you want.
Travis: It feels amazing man! I used to say to myself – I didn’t think it could be me and I hear a lot of people say the same thing, but at the same time, if you work for it and work hard, how could it not be you? You know what I mean? I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately and it makes perfect sense. So how do I say it’s not for me when I’ve worked for it? I worked for it so this is for me; I worked for it and it happened.
SUAVV: It’s crazy because we imagine things, we see them in our heads and say I have this plan, I’m going to work for it. Then when it happens, it’s like I can’t believe this is happening.
Travis: see what I mean? And it’s almost for yourself, how does it even work? How does it even make sense to say how can I believe? Yes, you can believe that. That’s what you worked for. When you’ve worked hard and made sacrifices, what do you think will happen next? It had to happen; It was just about being patient and saying when it’s going to happen.
SUAVV: You are exactly where you should be.
Travis: Right. Now my new thing is I can believe I got here as quick as it happened. You know what I mean? Because I modeled for years and acted for two years. Now I’m at the beginning of my acting career. But the beginning of my acting is with Tyler Perry, you know what I’m saying? Most people wait years for this to happen. I’m only 32 so I’m still pretty young at my game. Most of the time you hear these stories about people who work 10 to 12 years and don’t get their break until they’re 42 or 50. Mine came quickly, but I’ve also had other things that were so delayed. It’s like people like The Rock who do wrestling first and then move on to acting. It works really well because they already had a following, you know what I mean?
Travis: The transition hasn’t been easy for me, but I’ve had a following straight from modeling, so now that I’m doing this, my people are like, ‘Oh man, you act too? We will support that.”
SUAVV: Everything falls into place; You have people who are veteran actors who are in their 70s and say you know I didn’t start until I was 48 but that was their time to start.
Travis: Right, that was what they said and they were. Absolutely man, but some go for it. Now what you do is also important. You need to keep a clean face or a record, especially in the beginning a lot of people did weird things and these pics will pop up on social media and Instagram and you’re wondering if you really want that? because I know that you aspire to be an actor. The first thing Tyler Perry and his crew told me was let’s look at your Instagram, Facebook and personality and see what you have. So now you’re saying oh snap let me start deleting but it might be too late because people are taking screenshots and posting stuff and tagging you. Thank god how I started was very cool. But there were a lot of things I didn’t like right from the start. Because I knew something bigger was coming eventually, and when it comes, you want people to be okay. Because everyone started somewhere and I’m not knocking on that and I’m not saying you shouldn’t do this or that, but you just have to be nervous about what it is. There’s nothing wrong with taking some tasteful photos, but when you put stuff on display and you see stuff, it’s like bruh, if you’re going to do that, then you’re going to end up doing that. Then when you start thinking about switching, it gets a bit difficult because it might not even happen. There will be some obstacles if you think you’re having a hard time now, just think how it will be as you try to get even further. This will hold you down I’m not saying you can’t do it, if you later want to be a bit daring and snap some photos it might work. Because ESPN had this new campaign, the body campaign, and it worked for these guys and girls because they’re already established. It happened when it was supposed to happen. If you did it in the beginning, they might come back to you and say, ‘Well, we already saw that in the early stages, so who cares?
Travis: You don’t want that; You want that shock value. I want to get to the point where I’m so big and so amazing that when I do it it’s like oh my god, and then you get to 200,000 followers. Then GQ gets in touch and asks you to shoot and interview for the cover and they want to use you for and for that.
