The mother of a 14-year-old boy who fell to his death while riding at ICON Park spoke to the public Tuesday. Nekia Dodd, the mother of Tire Sampson, spoke at an 11:30 a.m. news conference in St. Louis. Eastern.Related: Attorney Ben Crump holds a press conference on the death of the ICON Park ride, lawsuit attorney Michael Haggard began by saying the tragedy could have absolutely been avoided with a $22 seatbelt for the 30 seats on the ride be able. “It would have cost $660 to save a 14-year-old’s life. You would have paid for it in two cycles of the ride,” he said. Haggard said the ride’s designers failed by recommending the attraction not have seat belts. The attorney said Slingshot modified the seats for taller drivers. However, he said it was still unknown who tampered with the seats. “They deliberately rigged it so that when Tire Sampson was on the ride, it opened 10 to 11 inches,” Haggard said. “Tampering with a safety device that tricked the sensor … is a matter that I think law enforcement will look into in this case.” He pointed out that while there were no scales or a weight limit sign for the ride , but they had a full metal detector so people didn’t lose their keys or valuables. The ride manufacturer also recommended a maximum rider weight of 287 pounds. Tires weighed 380 pounds. Haggard said Nekia Dodd is standing up for other mothers to make sure no one else has to go through what she went through. She vowed not to settle because she wants a court case that produces documents proving alleged negligence to be made public. “I couldn’t touch him, I couldn’t hold him, I couldn’t hug him, all I could do was cry on the phone. I wouldn’t wish that on any parent.” She described her 14-year-old son as a respected, humble boy. Dodd said she wants her son to be remembered as a loving young man of strong character who was destined for the NFL. Tire’s nickname on the football field was “Big Tick”, short for “Big Ticket”. It was emblazoned on his mother’s t-shirt. Dodd promises to push for new federal law to improve the safety and supervision of amusement park rides. “He was on his way, he was going to be known, but not like that,” she said. Dodd said she wants the ride to be permanently dismantled. She said it was hard, but she needed to stay strong for her other children. Dodd said the last thing Tire said to her was, “I’ll see you Saturday or Sunday.” “So to get a call to say he’s not coming back I’m still in shock. It’s a nightmare, a longer nightmare,” she said. Dodd said it was “disgusting” that her son’s life could have been saved with a $22 seat belt. “You didn’t want to miss a dollar, but you took my son from me,” she said. “It’s gross.” She urged other moms to “love their kids.” Watch the full press conference below: Sampson Family Files Lawsuit The family is suing everyone involved, including ICON Park and the companies that own and built the Free Fall. The lawsuit names ICON Park along with Slingshot Group, which owns the Free Fall, amusement ride maker Keator Construction, and Funtime Handels, the Austrian company that created it. It alleges negligence, saying they concealed the flawed design, failed to properly train staff and failed to install seat belts. Plus, Revelation’s forensic engineers told the public last week that workers allegedly modified the harness to allow taller people to ride on it. Lawyers say there was a 7-inch gap between the belt and the seat pan that caused Sampson to slide out and fall to his death. The families are suing the individual employees not totally stumbled in free fall and didn’t realize anything. So Slingshot is obviously responsible for the negligence of their employees, so there’s really no point in suing them individually in this case,” said Michael Haggard, Sampson’s mother’s attorney. Sampson’s family also plans to lobby Congress for safety amusement park. ICON Park officials declined to comment on the lawsuit, but Slingshot Group attorney Trevor Arnold commented on the lawsuit filed Monday. Arnold said in a statement on behalf of GrayRobinson P.A., “Orlando Slingshot continues to cooperate fully with the state during its investigation, and we will continue to do so until it is officially closed. We reiterate that all protocols, procedures, and security measures are in place and we look forward to working with the Florida Legislature to bring about changes to implement in the industry, and we also support those of the state representative Geraldine Thompson outlined concepts to make changes to state laws through the ‘Tyre Sampson Bill’ to prevent a tragic accident like this from ever happening again. Tyre Sampson’s father responds to autopsy results

ORLANDO, Fla. — Yarnell Sampson spoke alongside civil rights attorney Ben Crump on Monday morning. Yarnell is the father of Tire Sampson, the teenager who fell to his death on Orlando’s FreeFall ride in March.

Responding to the results of the 14-year-old boy’s recently released autopsy report, Sampson said, “He deserves to be respected more than what they give him.”

Sampson was speaking near Orlando’s ICON Park alongside his attorney, who is known for trying civil rights and personal injury cases.

“The reason we’re here is to make sure nobody else has to go through the same thing,” Yarnell said.

Orlando FreeFall remains closed months after teen was killed. On March 24, Tire fell to his death from the 430-foot roller coaster ride.

In the autopsy report, the coroner determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma; It also states that the death was an accident.

Tire’s family and others are demanding that the ride be demolished. Sampson would also like a permanent memorial to his son in place of the ride.

“Tear it down.” Protester is demanding the Orlando FreeFall ride be dismantled. In about half an hour, Tire Sampson’s father, Yarnell, will be speaking with attorney Ben Crump about his son’s autopsy results. @MyNews13 #news13orange pic.twitter.com/xpiAO7nLWe – Rebecca Turco (@RebeccaTurcoTV) June 20, 2022

Yarnell said he came to visit the site on Father’s Day, which is also his birthday, but felt empty when he saw the makeshift memorial was gone.

“I figured I would come up here and see all these memorial teddy bears and stuff like that and that would be my comfort zone. But when I came up here I just thought that everyone just left him and everyone cares about him no more and there is no more love. I felt empty,” he said.

Orlando Slingshot, who is on the ride’s operations group, said the memorial was taken down a few weeks ago. Officials said they cleaned up the area and sent the memorial items to the families’ representatives.

However, Crump said they were told a permanent memorial would be erected in its place.

“Tyre Sampson is important. His life is important. His legacy is important,” Crump said during Monday’s news conference.

In April, Yarnell Sampson appeared at ICON Park to speak about the tragedy.

“When I found out this was my child, it took my breath away. It took that… some life out of me too. It just left me numb and helpless,” Yarnell Sampson said at the time.

Attorneys for the families filed a lawsuit against several companies associated with Orlando FreeFall in late April. The lawsuit alleges they failed to disclose height and weight limits when Tire was well over the limit.

A previous report from engineers said the ride’s sensors had been manually adjusted to double the size of the ride’s seat restraint systems. It is therefore said that Sampson was not backed up properly.

Yarnell’s attorneys believe the seats were adjusted to allow taller drivers to ride further, arguing they “put profits ahead of safety.” Yarnell said he wanted to know who made that call.

“We don’t know how far that chain of command reached. That’s why I want to know the truth. That’s what I’m here for,” he said.

The attorney representing the operator of the ride released a statement in response to this autopsy report, stating:

“The loss of Tire Sampson was a tragic accident. We continue to communicate and cooperate with representatives of the von Tire family and the Department of Agriculture. We are dedicated to working with our lawmakers to make lasting safety changes in the amusement park industry,” wrote attorney Trevor Arnold.

In a statement released Monday, they also said they will continue to send memorabilia to the family but did not say if a permanent memorial will be erected.

Autopsy Tyre Sampson, 14, died of blunt trauma in Florida drop-tower ride death

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — An autopsy says a Missouri teenager died of blunt force trauma after falling from a 430-foot drop tower at a Florida amusement park.

Monday’s report from the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office also ruled that the death of 14-year-old Tire Sampson in March was an accident.

Sampson slipped out of his seat about halfway through the Free Fall ride in a tourist area of Orlando. Sampson was there on vacation with a friend’s family.

The autopsy also revealed that Sampson, who played football in the St. Louis area, weighed 383 pounds when he died.

An initial investigation revealed that sensors were manually adjusted to double the size of the restraint systems on his seat.

Sampson’s parents sued the ride’s owner, manufacturer and rental company in April, alleging they were negligent and failed to provide a safe ride. They said in the lawsuit their son was not warned of the risks of someone his size going on the ride and was not provided with an adequate restraint system.

While most Free Fall rides have a shoulder harness and seat belt, the Orlando Free Fall ride only had a shoulder harness. Adding seat belts to the ride’s 30 seats would have cost $660, the lawsuit says.
