Wayne Diamond

American fashion designer

Wayne Diamond is an American fashion designer best known for his portrayal of an exaggerated version of himself in the 2019 film Uncut Gems by the Safdie brothers.

Biography[edit]

Wayne Diamond was born on Long Island, New York,[1] and grew up in Oceanside with three sisters and one brother. His father, Alan, taught accounting at Nassau Community College and Adelphi University. His mother Marilyn was a school teacher.[2] Diamond attended Oceanside High School in his youth.[3]

He later founded the Schneider Diamond’s Run based in New York’s Garment District in the 1970s.[4] He designed for the company in the 1980s[5] until its sale in the 1990s[4] for $110 million.[3] During this time he spent much of his career in the Hamptons.[6] Diamond says he designed every dress Vanna White wore in Wheel of Fortune.[2]

Diamond has been married twice, and he has been married to his second wife for nearly four decades. He has four children, including a daughter named Jamie, a teacher at UPenn.[7][8] Diamond is Jewish.[9]

He is best known for his portrayal as a fictionalized version of himself in the Safdie brothers’ 2019 film Uncut Gems. He has also appeared in two horror videos, txt msg and scAIRcrows.[4][10]

An Afternoon With Wayne Diamond, the Uncut Gems Gem and a Guru in the Rough

The Safdie brothers populate their films with unlikely characters, village idiosyncrasies plucked from the wild and unleashed on the screenplay. Many of them are unkempt, rough around the edges. Wayne Diamond is a dreamer and romantic with big ambitions — just before I arrived, he told me, he got a text from Uncut Gems producer Sebastian Bear-McClard, who was introducing Wayne Diamond to the Safdies for the first time. “He texted me… what the hell did he text me?” Wayne Diamond scratches his phone. “Here: ‘I’m going to change your life.'”

Will Wayne Diamond switch mine? As our 45 minutes together stretch to nearly two hours, Wayne Diamond’s anachronistic train of thought slowly gives way to something deeply poetically human. Ultimately. “I think people look like slobs,” he tells me. “They don’t look good.” Men, he says, “are really shabby these days. They got their porn, they jerk off all day, and they don’t even have that many babies anymore.”

“Can you tell that by the way they dress?” I ask.

His publicist — a new addition to the roster since his newfound movie star, along with two social media execs curating a bombastically serious Instagram account — clarifies that he’s referring to “athleisure.” “Yes, right,” he nods. “That’s disgusting.”

He continues: “First of all, I think chinos should be banned in every restaurant in New York. Striped shirts and checked shirts. They should kick you out of a restaurant.” Once Wayne Diamond gets away with his theory on the decline, the attire, and the rise of porn—his own hemline index, if you will—it’s basically impossible to stop him . Everything moves except his hair. (Wayne Diamond says he generally does his own hair — “I get the right gel, I get the right hairspray, I hold it up, it’s a whole journey to watch me do it” — although he sometimes to ” 1400 Broadway”, a place I later find on Google called “Made Man Barber”).

And porn has totally screwed up men: “It’s a really shitty world we live in. Not morally,” he clarifies, but people “don’t get excited about the same things anymore.” For example, “When they were interested in art or something, they went to a museum and saw these [naked] women and their kind , how they used to look, maybe they would get a better idea of life. I don’t think people are reading anymore either, which is another problem.” When he was young, you had to find other ways to get away: “Like Lady Chatterley’s lover, every guy in the world has been jerking off, but at least you have you read a good book!”

“We have a cultural problem in America,” he continues. “We don’t have much culture and what we have really isn’t much. If you go to Europe, everyone wears a beautiful jacket, going out to dinner, beautiful jewelry, very noble. Good shoes, everything shines, looks chic.”

Enough whining, I say. What are two or three things a man can do to improve himself? That seems to be something Wayne Diamond has given a lot of thought to. “The first thing a man has to do is look at himself in the mirror. And say, “What could I do to make myself look better?” Even if a guy is ugly. “What can I do?” That’s the first thing. Just look at your body and look at your face and say, “What can I do with my body and my face?” Get naked in front of the mirror, he says, and ask yourself, “How do I cover the fat? How do I do this, how do I make myself look better?'”

Meet Wayne Diamond, the man who made Uncut Gems unfuggedable

Two bloodsuckers decided on celluloid, and it was finally time to make gems. ”About two years ago I got a call and the Safdies said to me, ‘We’re going to do [Uncut Gems], but you’re not the star,'” Diamond recalled. “I said, ‘What do you mean, be a star? I’m not even an actor!'” Diamond thought the call was a joke until the film’s casting director, Jennifer Venditti, called him four months later and asked him to audition. He improvised a scene in which he approaches a girl. “I did this whole damn thing with this chick. And there, I dropped a dime, I walk up to her, “Hey baby, how are you?” You’re hot. You wanna fuck?’ You know, that kind of situation. So [Venditti] says, “You’re the guy, we love you. You’re perfect for the role.’” Venditti recalls differently. “He wasn’t inappropriate at all,” she says. “He was just his charming, wild self.”

Wayne Diamond’s charming, wild self grew up with three sisters and one brother in Oceanside, Long Island. His father, Alan, taught accounting at Nassau Community College and Adelphi University. His mother Marilyn was a teacher. They were struggling financially. In 1968, hoping to catch up with his friends on the way south, Diamond took a $19 Greyhound bus to Florida. He was dropped off at the Eden Roc in Miami Beach. “I weighed 100 pounds. I had nothing to eat. I was just starving,” he says. What he saw was a photo of Slim Aarons brought to life. High society mongrels were collecting food orders at a counter when she called They signed their names and took the food. The name Meyer Lansky was mentioned. Diamond signed for it and told them something like “I’m the nephew!” and collected a burger and coke.

“So I’m eating, I’m having a good time,” says Diamond, his hand gestures selling his story at a discount. “This little guy, about five feet tall, comes over to me and says, ‘Hey, kid. You’re signing a name, Meyer Lansky, on a bill?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I see everyone else signing names, so I signed the name.’” Diamond had no idea that he was unknowingly cheating on one of the most notorious had mafia men in America from his lunch.
