Tulsa homicide, arson probe may have leads following media attention

The cousin of a murder victim found dead in a Sept. 9 arson attack in Tulsa spoke up Saturday and asked anyone with information that might help solve the case to come forward.

These requests follow renewed interest in the case after recent media attention helped uncover potential leads.

Desiree Jenkins, a cousin of Christen Crystal Marie Welch, emailed Tulsa World recalling Welch as a person who was “far from perfect” but who was “loved and cared for by her family.” ” became.

Welch, 35, was found dead in a bedroom of a home on Block 3600 of West Easton Street. Someone saw smoke and reported a fire at the home around 6 a.m., police said. Detectives recently unveiled a theory that a group of teenagers unknowingly tripped over Welch during a burglary and killed her before setting her body on fire.

Since the media attention in midweek, Tulsa Police Department Homicide Sgt. Dave Walker said Saturday it had questioned four people who provided information about burglaries. The first tip from Crime Stoppers was also received, Walker said.

“We are proceeding with these lesser charges in the hope that this breaks the case of murder,” Walker said. “Also, the kids we’re talking about need some supervision.”

Walker announced earlier in the week that detectives believe a group of youths and teenagers broke into Welch’s home, thinking it was empty. The teens abuse methamphetamine and are part of a burglary and vandalism ring in neighborhoods west of downtown Tulsa, Walker said.

Jenkins said she hopes the tipsters would help authorities find the person or persons responsible for her cousin’s murder. She said Welch is the mother of three boys who are grieving their loss along with other family members.

“Christen has had a bumpy road in life and made some less than perfect decisions, but she worked to get her life back on track,” Jenkins said.

On the morning of the fire, Tulsa firefighters doused the flames and called the police after becoming suspicious when they discovered the home had no working utilities. Investigators searched the home and found materials used to make meth, but no evidence of an active meth lab. Walker said the home was known to police for its drug activities.

After more than a month, police had not identified any suspects, determined a specific motive, or received any leads on the case, so Walker turned to the community for help.

“I wish they had already figured out who did this to her, but I understand the complexity of the case,” Jenkins said.

Crystal Marie Welch Murder How Did She Die Who Killed Her

A&E’s “The First 48” is a series that explores those murder cases where investigators work tirelessly to track crime scene evidence, forensic reports and tips in order to identify and finally arrest the perpetrator. The purpose here is to illustrate how and why the first two days of any investigation are most important, especially as they can mean the difference between a cold case and a solved case. So, of course, the episode titled “Unforgotten: Crystal,” which explores the 2014 murder of Crystal Marie Welch, is no different. So let’s find out all the details, shall we?

How did Crystal Marie Welch die?

At the age of 35, Crystal Marie Welch, also known as Crystal Wishart, was a mother to three young boys and was actively trying to get her life back on track when it was suddenly blown away. According to a cousin, she had “addressed a bumpy path in life and made some less-than-perfect decisions,” but she tried to be better and was still genuinely “loved and cared for by her family.” Unfortunately, Crystal passed before she could reach her goal. At approximately 6 a.m. on September 9, 2014, the Tulsa Fire Department responded to a call at a home on West Easton Street.

Firefighters doused the flames shortly after a concerned neighbor saw smoke coming from the 3600 block home, only to call local police when they discovered there were no working utilities. Investigators searched the home and discovered Crystal’s cremated remains in a bedroom. Due to the extent of the injuries, it took a while to identify them. However, it soon emerged that she had been beaten to death before being set on fire around 3am. Crystal’s body was charred and she suffered blunt force trauma to her head.

Who Killed Crystal Marie Welch?

Searching the home, investigators also recovered materials used to manufacture methamphetamine with no evidence of an active meth lab, although the address was known for frequent drug activity and squatting. In the days that followed, they tried their best to interview all plausible parties involved and follow up the evidence, but the arson prevented them from doing so as fire damage prevented them from establishing a motive or finding incriminating evidence. Although authorities could not identify the suspects, they ultimately came up with a theory of what they believe happened.

According to police, a group of teenagers, aged 12 to 15, broke into a house they believed to be unoccupied because of non-working utilities to find something to steal. However, when they allegedly entered the location without expecting anyone to be around, when they saw Crystal they did the first thing that came to mind and killed her before setting the house on fire to cover their tracks blur. According to officials, these youths were part of a burglary/vandalism ring in downtown Tulsa that was known for breaking into empty areas to spray paint walls and steal valuables.

If this hypothesis is correct, the teens could only murder Crystal Marie Welch because they were using meth, were high at the time, and had limited inhibitions. Detectives are confident they spoke to the attackers on the matter; It’s just that a lack of concrete evidence prevents them from identifying them with certainty. So if you have any information regarding this, do not hesitate to contact the Tulsa Police Department or local Crime Stoppers at 918-596-2677. You can also submit your tips online or send them to CRIMES (274637) by starting the latter with “Tip918”.

Tulsa Police Teen Burglary Ring Responsible For Killing Woman, Setting House On Fire

Wednesday 15 October 2014 6:32 pm

From: News on 6

Teens as young as 13 are suspected in the murder of a west Tulsa woman.

Investigators believe a ring of teenage burglars – addicted to drugs – knows more about last month’s murder than they’re telling police, so investigators are asking them to come forward.

Christen Welch’s body was left ablaze in an abandoned house in West Tulsa last month. Sergeant Dave Walker found her body beaten to death.

“As we worked on it, we see this other problem that’s out there and we just can’t ignore it,” he said.

The murder of Welch led police into a drug and burglary-ridden teenage underworld operating primarily in west Tulsa.

Walker believes a ring of ten or more 13-15 year olds killed an innocent woman.

Police believe the teenagers broke into the house, thinking no one was inside. Police said the teens found Welch inside, woke her up, brutally beat her, and then set the house on fire.

Neighbor Vicky Wright said the home was known for drug activity and squatters. Still, she was surprised to see the house burning on the morning of September 9, and was shocked when a body was found inside.

“No one should ever do that. It’s just so wrong,” she said. “What makes you think it’s okay to kill someone?”

By making meth, Walker said.

“Some of these kids are on methamphetamine and they smoke Ice and they’re almost brain dead,” he said.

Walker said he interviewed nearly twenty people about the murder but needed to hear from the children.

“The parents of these kids shield them and the kids don’t really talk,” Walker said.

Wright said, “If you’re mature enough to believe you can do whatever you want, grow up and admit it.”

Walker said people need to stop using meth and that many murders are related to the drug.

If you know anything about the murder, you can call Crime Stoppers at 918-596-COPS to get help for yourself and help solve the case.
