A dirty video, sourced from a gym in Mexico, has gone viral on Twitter and Reddit. The video shows the death of a woman who was about to do a squat. The hot video shows a barbell falling on the woman’s neck, hitting her with such brutal force that she ends up losing her life.

23-year-old paramedic dies when machine falls on her at gym

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOV/Gray News) — A 23-year-old paramedic was killed when fitness equipment fell on her while she was working out at a club fitness early Tuesday morning.

Police said the freak accident happened around 2:50 a.m. when no one else was at the gym. Another gym-goer found Dolores “Dolo” Boschert dead under the equipment when they entered the gym about 30 minutes after the accident.

The gym member who found Boschert tried to help and called 911.

Police said Boschert was squatting on a Smith machine when her legs buckled and she was pinned under the barbell. A Smith machine is a weight machine consisting of a barbell mounted in steel rails, allowing only vertical movement. It is most commonly used to perform squats.

Boschert worked as a paramedic for Christian Hospital EMS and was named Paramedic of the Year the week before her death.

In a Facebook post, Christian Hospital EMS said they will miss Boschert’s “living” energy.

“One of the biggest differences between free weights and the Smith machine is that with free weights, in addition to working your major movement muscles — larger muscles like quads, hamstrings, glutes, pecs, lats, delts, etc. — you also need to use your small stabilizers to maintain balance during lifts,” says Lauren Pak, CPT, co-owner of Jason and Lauren Pak and co-host of the Reasonably Fit podcast.

When it comes down to it, there are a few reasons why lifting with free weights like dumbbells, kettlebells, and barbells is better than lifting with the Smith machine — and vice versa. Here are the key differences between free weights and the Smith machine, as well as the pros and cons of using each tool for specific exercises.

This is part of what makes the machine great for targeting the main muscles that power each exercise. The downside, however, is that it can force you to move in ways that don’t work with your unique anatomy or flexibility limitations – leading to potential discomfort or even injury.

4. The Smith machine is helpful for beginners

In general, the Smith machine can be helpful for beginners who have never handled a barbell before, Horton says. In this case, its limitations are its strengths: lifting along a set path takes away balance and stability work and makes the exercise a little easier to perform.

The machine also recognizes itself during overhead lifts, which can be useful for beginners and intermediates, adds Horton.

Horton recommends that you first become familiar with the locking mechanism so you don’t have any trouble if you need to quickly re-engage the weight.

“Your hands have to do quite a bit of work to pull it off and put it back on,” he says. Ask a gym employee to teach you how to do it properly, then practice before you start lifting.

Warning You should only lift what you are capable of, says Horton. “Don’t be fooled into thinking that because you’re using a Smith machine you can suddenly lift some weights and keep pushing yourself to the limit. You can still injure yourself.” As with any other type of lifting, start with light weights and slowly increase to heavier weights if your current weight feels too light, i.e. too heavy.

While a regular barbell bench press allows you to move how you want, it’s also slightly more dangerous than a Smith machine.

There are hooks on the sides of a Smith machine into which you can slide the barbell. If you struggle during a rep and think you’re going to fail, you can just lock the bar in place and stay unharmed (assuming you know how). With regular bench press, you need an observer when attempting a weight you’re not sure about.

“The bar path needs to move directly up and down (not forward or backward), which can cause discomfort in the shoulder joint and is generally a weaker path,” says Pak.

So you need to position your body so that the bar can touch the bottom half of your chest at the bottom of the lift.

You also lose some of the power of the movement when the bar in the Smith press moves on a fixed plane. The bench press movement, where you’re pushing the weight back up, actually gives you momentum and allows you to use your delts and pecs a little more.

While some people can often lift more with the Smith bench press than with free weights, the benefits and movement patterns of using free weights don’t translate well.

When you bench press with free weights, some of the small muscles around your shoulder joint, such as B. the rotator cuff, needed to stabilize the bar.
