Wendy was broadcast live Monday through Thursday to a studio audience at Chelsea Studios in New York City. The Friday shows were either a first episode originally taped after Thursday to air the next day, or a repeat of a previous episode. The show regularly rivaled The Ellen DeGeneres Show for the top-ranked syndicated talk show and averaged more than 1.6 million viewers per day, including 440,000 in the target demo of women 25-54.[6][7]

On April 21, 2008, Fox Television Stations ordered a test run of the show for the Fox-owned and operated stations to air after their local weekday morning newscasts. The Wendy Williams Show premiered on July 14, 2008 as a six-week rehearsal at four Fox-owned locations: WNYW/New York City, KTTV/Los Angeles, WJBK/Detroit, and KDFW/Dallas-Fort Worth.[11]
Upon completion of the test run[12][13], Debmar-Mercury took over the program for a full nationwide launch and through additional station group pickups (including stations owned by CBS TV stations, NBC-owned TV stations, Tribune Broadcasting, LIN TV Corporation, Cox Media Group, Local TV LLC, Raycom Media, New Vision Television and Meredith Corporation) was broadcast on channels covering more than 95% of the country, including all 20 largest media markets and 45 of the top 50 markets. [14] On June 4, 2009, BET acquired the cable syndication rights to the show and aired it as part of the cable channel’s late-night programming. The Wendy Williams Show entered national syndication on broadcasters and BET on July 13, 2009 before being dropped from the network on September 15, 2017 (along with The Real). It was then renamed BET Her at the beginning of the year for one more season in 2017–18, before being canceled again in late summer 2018. The 2018–19 season saw the episodes of The Last Day Before airing on Pop for the first time and being canceled for the third and final time. Also, the show is now airing on Bounce TV.
The Wendy Williams Show went on a 17-city “Say It Like You Mean It” promotional tour across the United States in the summer of 2011, hosting mini versions of the show at local malls. Williams undertook a 10-city tour in the summer of 2018 to celebrate the show’s tenth season.

The thirteenth season premiere of The Wendy Williams Show was delayed by several weeks due to Williams suffering a breakthrough case of COVID-19 and ongoing complications from her Graves’ disease and thyroid condition. It was later announced that the season would premiere on October 18, 2021, with guest presenters Leah Remini, Michelle Visage, Whitney Cummings, Michelle Buteau, Sherri Shepherd, Michael Rapaport and Bill Bellamy filling in for Williams until she can return to the show.[33] On February 8, 2022 it was reported that Williams would miss the remainder of the season and that Shepherd – whom Williams had backed as interim host [34] – had entered talks to potentially host a replacement program should Williams fail to return.[35 ]
On February 22, 2022, Debmar-Mercury announced that The Wendy Williams Show would be replaced by Sherri Shepherd-hosted Sherri for the 2022–23 television season, with Fox Television Stations signing on to remain their core affiliate group. The show will retain its showrunner, executive producer, and segments such as “Hot Topics.”[34] Debmar-Mercury stated that “we believe it is best for our fans, broadcasters and advertising partners to begin this transition now” and that “we hope and wish to continue working with Wendy in the future.” all the best and a speedy and full recovery.”[36] The final episode aired on June 17, with Williams unable to attend.[37] The show’s YouTube channel was deleted and associated website domains were abandoned by early July.[38]

Though Williams has expressed her support for Beyoncé on numerous occasions, she has made several comments that have angered the singer’s fan group, “The Beyhive.” Speaking about Beyoncé’s HBO documentary Life Is But a Dream in 2012, Williams explained that she needed “closed captions” for the film because Beyoncé “talks like she has fifth grade schooling.”[39] Williams has also commented several times that Beyoncé “needs autotune” and is not a contemporary music icon.[40]

In a June 2021 “Inside Scoop” segment, Williams discussed statements by Britney Spears regarding her Conservatoryship, in which Spears described the Conservatoryship as “abusive” and spoke of trauma her father inflicted on Jamie Spears. Williams – who had been supportive of both Spears’ father and the conservatory in general – said in response to Spears’ testimony:
“How dare you, Mr. Spears, you fooled me. And you too, Mrs. Spears. Death to them all.”
Her comments drew a shocked and disturbed response from her audience and collaborators, as well as from Williams herself. Several outlets criticized Williams for the comments. The “death to them all” part was excised from online clips and later airings of the episode.
Death of Amie Harwick[edit]
On February 17, 2020, Williams made a joke about Amie Harwick, a Hollywood sex therapist who died on February 15 from injuries sustained when she was thrown from a three-story balcony.[45] Referring to Harwick’s previous engagement to The Price Is Right host Drew Carey, Williams joked, using Carey’s catchphrase from the show, “Get down!” and looking down pretending to see someone fall to the ground.[ 46] The joke drew strong backlash, with many criticizing her for being insensitive and mocking Harwick’s death.

In a May 2021 segment discussing Ellen DeGeneres announcing that her talk show would end the following year, Williams stated that she believes DeGeneres is due to negative publicity surrounding an investigation into allegations about the show’s working environment would actually go in July 2020; The investigation eventually led to WarnerMedia firing three executive producers on the show. Williams commented, “Nineteen years on TV doesn’t change your life, it exposes you for who you really are,” revealing that when she appeared on her show years earlier, “she wasn’t happy [as a guest]. Several commentators found Williams’ comments “shady” and disrespectful.[48][49][50]
On February 13, 2020, Williams was accused of homophobia and transphobia during a segment covering the unofficial holiday of Galentine’s Day, in which she told gay men to “stop wearing our skirts and heels” and that you have to menstruate “to be a woman”. Williams tearfully apologized for the comments in a video posted to social media and again on her show.[51][52]
