Charges filed against L.A. rapper who allegedly flashed gun in video

A man accused of flashing a handgun while filming a Los Angeles police officer during a promotional video for his rap group faces gun crime charges, according to court documents obtained Tuesday.

Alex Izquierdo, 35, has been charged with having a concealed firearm in a vehicle, according to the single-count criminal complaint filed last week.

Prosecutors allege Izquierdo – who they said was convicted of carrying a concealed weapon in 1999 – committed the crime “with specific intent to encourage, encourage and assist criminal behavior by gang members.”

The complaint was not detailed.

Izquierdo is scheduled to be charged Thursday, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Attorney’s Office said.

Although the video drew the ire of the city’s police union and caused concern among Los Angeles Police Department officials, Izquierdo and others said the clip was just an attempt to promote a Brownside comeback album, one of he founded Chicano rap group from the 1990s NWA member Eazy-E.

On Tuesday, the group’s publicist, Phyllis Pollack, called the allegations “ridiculous” and repeated Izquierdo’s claim that the gun featured in the video was not real.

“You can turn on any type of TV show and you can see prop guns and police cars all the time. But when a rapper does it, especially someone who happens to be of Latino descent, it’s a real problem,” said Pollack, a former music journalist who was also a publicist for Eazy-E. “This is for a music video. This gun was never raised over the dash.”

The shot, which circulated on social media on October 5, appears to have been taken of a car parked behind a black-and-white LAPD cruiser. The video had no sound, but the camera focuses on the cruiser before panning down to show someone’s hand holding what police have described as a revolver.

The subject briefly points the gun at the camera before sheathing it. The camera then cuts back to the squad car and shows an officer getting out and walking away.

Pollack said Izquierdo did not visit the police car. He simply decided that the imagery for an upcoming music video that Brownside planned to release to accompany his comeback album could be “cool.”

“This is a music video and it’s not asking people to kill cops,” she said. “There isn’t a song on the album that tells people to kill cops.”

Pollack also scoffed at the idea that Izquierdo’s actions encouraged gang activity. She said Izquierdo and his older brother Gilbert, a founding member of Brownside who goes by the stage name Toker, are not affiliated with any gangs.

But with the video appearing on social media following a recent spate of attacks on police officers across the country, the video quickly fueled concerns at the LAPD’s grassroots level.

The city’s police union chief said the video was a reference to “the anti-police narrative being communicated by some in our society” and officers were ordered to patrol in pairs while the department’s robbery-homicide unit investigated the potential threat examined.

Earlier this month, Izquierdo, who goes by the rap name Klever, said on social media (explicit content warning) that the LAPD had tried to frame him.

“They got me on the news behind a BS lie they make up!! All behind a prop gun!!” he wrote in capital letters on Instagram two weeks ago.

Izquerido was arrested and released on $200,000 bail days after the video surfaced.
