One of those truths is that vaccines occasionally produce terrible reactions in people. These “adverse events,” as they are euphemistically called, are extremely rare. Although the link is inconclusive, some evidence suggests that one in a million children who receive the MMR vaccine, for example, will develop encephalitis, a potentially dangerous inflammation of the brain. Between one and three in every million recipients of the flu vaccine will be affected by a terrible paralysis called Guillain-Barré Syndrome. Eric Ball, another Orange County pediatrician, is the vice chair of the local chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Today, just three years later, the same doctors are in contention. “We’re completely on the defensive,” he said. “Now we just want to hold on to what we have. I worry about what will happen in the next few years and that we will see more children with measles and whooping cough.”
Locally, vaccine-related violence appears to be escalating. In December, an angry man attacked workers at a mobile immunization clinic in Tustin, Orange County, calling them “murderers.” It took seven police officers with tasers, aided by workers and patients, to subdue him. Late last year, another man used his car to hit a vaccine worker in Los Angeles. In Colorado, unknown attackers threw firecrackers into mobile vaccination tents, forcing the companies responsible to hire security guards. Last spring, a woman was plowing her minivan through a Tennessee vaccination tent when she yelled, “No vaccine!”
Perhaps most threatening from a public health perspective, school mandates are under increasing attack in state legislatures. Numerous states have already enacted laws restricting or banning mandates for the Covid-19 vaccine.
