Roberta Custer, ‘Bleacher Bums’ actress-writer who helped put Chicago theater scene on the map, dead at 71

Actress and writer Roberta Custer created the role of the buxom sunbather in the original production of Bleacher Bums and helped produce a dynamic off-loop theater that catapulted Chicago’s stages to national acclaim.

Ms Custer, 71, died in California on Monday while sitting on the house for William Petersen, a friend from her Chicago stage days, her son Christopher said. She had gone from acting to his 20-year personal assistant, handling everything from organizing schedules to reading scripts for Petersen, the star of CBS-TV’s long-running “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.”

“She was a great actress, a great mother, a great friend to all of her theater community,” said Christopher Custer. “She raised me single-handedly.”

“She had a keen intellect and unparalleled taste,” said Dennis Zacek, artistic director emeritus at Victory Gardens Theatre. “She has helped me on many occasions.”

Chicago native Ms. Custer helped create the Organic Theater Co.’s 1977 play “Bleacher Bums,” about the rowdy, possibly bedazzled fans in the stands at Wrigley Field. The original cast included Ms. Custer as the flashy Melody King, Joe Mantegna and Dennis Franz. The production moved to New York in 1978 and was adapted into a 1979 TV movie. Organic rebuilt it in 1989. Mantegna came up with the idea, and he, Ms. Custer and all the other actors are credited with writing the show.

“I will always remember her as the beautiful blonde sunbathing in the stands at Wrigley Field,” Mantegna said. “She represented all the girls who used to go to Wrigley Field on Ladies Day.”

At Organic, she also directed Heat, a 1985 drama set in a fire station and starring Dennis Farina, then better known as the Chicago Cop.

Ms. Custer began acting in the heady first wave of the off-loop theater scene.

“She was in the Godzilla Rainbow Troupe, a really ragtag troupe with a director who went by the name ’11,'” said Jim Rinnert, a friend and writing partner.

She appeared in Godzilla Rainbow’s show “Turds in Hell,” which took place at the rustic Kingston Mines Theater, which she co-founded, said Albert Williams, a theater teacher at Columbia College Chicago.

“You walked through the bar, then you walked past it and went out a back door, and you were in a big old [tramway] barn,” Rinnert said.

“I think the first time I ever saw her was in a 1974 play ‘Sexual Perversity in Chicago,’ which was David Mamet’s very first [major] play,” Williams said. “It was made by the Organic Theater at the Uptown Hull House Theater. Like her, Mamet started out in the theater at Hull House.”

Sexual Perversity in Chicago became the basis for two films, the 2014 and 1986 versions of About Last Night.

Although she never performed at Remains Theater, she encouraged the ensemble that included Petersen, Gary Cole, Amy Morton, Ted Levine, D.W. Moffett and other notable actors.

“She helped them choose the game,” Rinnert said. “She was kind of a cave mother.”

“She was part of this whole off-loop movement that thrived along Lincoln Avenue around Fullerton in the late ’60s and early ’70s — the Body Politic Theater, the Kingston Mines Theater, the Organic Theater,” Williams said. “She was part of the group that made Chicago a theater city, that first group of people who didn’t want to go to LA or New York. They wanted to do theater on their own terms. . . . You started the Chicago theater movement – and I’m talking about the first six years, ’68 to ’74 – and then continued to be active as Chicago theater expanded in the ’80s and ’90s.”

By the early 1980s, Rinnert said, young actors were already looking at her with almost awe. He recalled visiting the Gaslight Tavern with her when two actors entered.

“They were in the booth behind ours and one of the actors said, ‘See that woman over there? This is Roberta Custer. She’s the grandmother of off-loop theatre.'”

She was in her late 30s at the time.

Rinnert and Ms. Custer also had some success in selling some scripts, although they went unproduced.

Her stage persona is comparable to Christine Baranski, Williams said – “edgy, kind of bitter, very smart, but also with a deep human empathy underneath.”

She was distinguished “just by her brave personality,” said sound designer Larry Hart. “She would just put it out there.”

Ms. Custer enjoyed visiting Tuscany, Venice and Florence and remained friends with Mantegna and the late Meshach Taylor of Designing Women, whom she had known since their Organic Theater days.

Memorials are planned in Chicago and Los Angeles at a later date, her son said.
