Fellow missionary No doubts Nathan Leuthold is guilty of murder

PEORIA — Killer Nathan Leuthold loved the work, enjoyed planning big projects, and was an avid baseball fan and hunter, said a person who served with him in Lithuania.

William Harper, a fellow missionary, lived five minutes from Leuthold, his wife Denise, and their three children in 2010 while they were in Siauliai, a town in north-central Lithuania.

“He was a very logical person and very well in control of his emotions,” he said. “It was rare that he did anything emotional.”

Leuthold will be convicted on Wednesday of the 2013 Valentine’s Day murder of his wife. He faces at least 45 years to life imprisonment. Prosecutors said Leuthold killed his wife to be with his Lithuanian lover, Aina Dobilaite, a statement both Dobilaite and Leuthold deny.

Harper had a hard time believing his friend was guilty, but after Leuthold was arrested last year and the facts came out, those doubts began to dissipate. Evidence in the process of internet searches, jail phone calls and what prosecutors said planned company stops were for his alibi cemented it.

“That’s one thing that points to him because he was such an organized person,” Harper said. “And when I found out that they (Nathan Leuthold and Dobilaite) had spent the night together in an apartment, I thought he might be guilty.”

Nathan Leuthold, whom he knew from pastoral care, was a family man. The two families were close, their children played together and their wives socialized.

Harper said his mind changed after coming back for Denise’s funeral.

“We spent a lot of time with him during (the funeral),” he said of Leuthold. “That was the only time I ever saw him cry. He talked a lot about the kids and how they would miss their mother, especially the girls looking forward to doing things with Denise.

“I remember he talked a lot about how that would affect his work. How that would affect the kids, but I don’t remember him saying anything to say he would miss his wife,” Harper said.

Denise, Harper said, was a quiet person in Lithuania and someone who took pride in taking care of her family.

“The children and the house have always been immaculate. She homeschooled the kids and the kids were good kids, well-behaved and articulate,” he said.

Harper also knew Dobilaite, who worked with the Leutholds.

“It was between her junior and senior years of high school,” Harper said, calling Dobilaite “one of the smartest people any of us will ever meet.”

The Lithuanian helped with the children, cleaned the house and often worked with Nathan Leuthold on translations or in church service.

Nathan, he said, recommended that Dobilaite teach his family Lithuanian, which they did for months.

Dobilaite and Nathan Leuthold’s relationship was a key factor for prosecutors who believe Leuthold killed his wife to be with the younger woman. When asked if he saw anything unusual or suspicious, Harper said the question arose, and both denied anything romantic.

But he recalled hearing that they traveled a lot together, staying overnight without Denise around, and that Dobilaite was spotted on a transatlantic flight snuggling up to Nathan during the long journey.

“What married man does that when his wife isn’t around, especially with an 18-year-old?” Harper asked.

Harper keeps in touch with people in Lithuania, where Dobilaite has since returned. People there tend to view the trial as suspicious given the state of their own criminal justice system, he said.

“In Lithuania, whoever has the most money will win, so a lot of them think it was set up by corrupt judges and the police,” Harper said.

Churchgoers struggle with this because Nathan Leuthold is very popular. And the church itself tacitly assumes part of the responsibility.

“The pastor there had told me that they would reconsider things because they let this (then) 18-year-old girl go across the ocean and go to college and never kept in touch with her,” he said.

Some think, “Aina is an innocent schoolgirl who was seduced by this older, more civilized guy.”

Others don’t believe there was an affair.

However, he said the focus for many in Lithuania is the fairness of the process.

The Valentine’s Day Murder of Denise Leuthold • Morbidology

Morbidology is a weekly true crime podcast created and hosted by Emily G. Thompson. Using investigative research combined with primary audio, Morbidology deeply examines true crime cases from around the world.

It was around 3:40 p.m. on Valentine’s Day 2013 when police in Peoria, Illinois received a report of a burglary. They came to the home on W. Mossville Road to investigate and found the lifeless body of 39-year-old Denise Leuthold just inside the front door. She had been killed with a single gunshot wound to the head.

Denise lived in the home with her husband Nathan Leuthold, three children and their parents. They had recently returned to the Peoria area from Lithuania. Denise was a Baptist missionary and her family had very close ties to the Church, with Nathan having preached at Crossroads in October 2012 during revival month.

In fact, since 1998, Denise and Nathan had served as missionaries in Lithuania. They had spent much of the last 15 years between the United States and Lithuania, traveling across the country planting churches and engaging in Christian missionary efforts.

Police asked the public not to panic, but to exercise caution and report anything suspicious. “Lock your doors. Lock your windows. Watch out for strangers around you or strangers’ cars,” Police Commissioner Steve Settingsgaard said.

By all appearances, Denise’s murder was a robbery gone wrong and fear gripped the entire community. If someone were willing to kill a stranger in a burglary, what’s the say they wouldn’t do it again? “If a burglary really did go wrong and a 39-year-old woman lost her life, that’s a cause for concern and the police need to make that clear,” said a local.

Fearing a killer was in the middle, District 323 administrators imposed a “soft lockdown” on all schools in the area. This included locking all doors, banning outside break time and closing classroom doors during the day. Police would try to allay the community’s fears by declaring, “I want the public to be reassured that we are working feverishly on this case.”

Meanwhile, Denise’s funeral was held at Cornerstone Baptist Church. Her pastor would remember her as a “kind-hearted” and “good-natured” woman. Describing her as an embodiment of Christian values, he said, “She was a very kind, compassionate, godly woman.”

The 911 call was from Nathan, who had just returned home at around 3:15 p.m. with their youngest child. He entered the home through the garage door and after seeing broken glass from a window at the back of the home and some scattered items, exited the home and called the police. He was waiting outside for the police to arrive and clear the house when Denise’s body was found.

A search of the home revealed that some items had been stolen. Denise’s car had also been stolen and found in a nearby Robinson Park parking lot. Police were still investigating the murder when they publicly stated that it could have been the result of a random break-in or even a targeted murder committed by someone who knew Denise.

There were no public developments in the case until early March, when a shocking announcement was made. Police arrested Denise’s own husband Nathan in connection with her murder. Announcing the arrest, Police Commissioner Settingsgaard said: “We believe the husband committed this murder and it was staged to look like a burglary.”

Nathan Lethold.

As it turned out, the police had viewed Nathan as a suspect from the start. They thought his behavior and actions were “a little unusual.” Just a day after Denise’s murder, prosecutors had issued a sealed application barring him from accessing safe deposit boxes at JP Morgan Chase Bank. In their request, they wrote that if Nathan had accessed the boxes, he could have used the contents to flee the country. Foreign currency, locker keys and passports were found during a search of Nathan’s car.

Police also believed the scene at the home had been staged to appear like a burglary, and yet there was no evidence of a burglary. Additionally, a neighbor reported that they saw Nathan around 12:20 p.m. walking on Mossville Road towards the house and away from the parking lot where Denise’s car was found parked. When Nathan spoke to police, he claimed he left the house at 11:15 a.m. and didn’t return until around 3:00 p.m. when he called the police.

The police soon had a possible motive for the gruesome murder. An investigation had revealed that Nathan was having an affair with a young Lithuanian woman, Aina, who had lived in the United States, attended college and was sponsored by the Letholds. Aina initially denied being involved with Nathan, but then admitted that he had come to Chicago to visit her about 20 times and that she had been fired from another college for having an inappropriate relationship with Nathan would have. Nathan and Aina had shared a bank account from which he bought her food and clothes and funded her living expenses.

Towards the end of March, Nathan was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and his murder trial began in July 2014. During the opening statement, prosecutor Jodi Hoos said that Nathan killed Denise to be with his 20-year-old lover. “She was his true Valentine,” she said. “I believe the evidence will show that the relationship he had before the murder and after the murder was much more than just a sponsored college student.”

Defense attorney Hugh Toner, on the other hand, said Nathan did not kill his wife. He revealed that the day the trial opened would have been her 19th anniversary. “And he’s going to sit here and hear accusations that he murdered his wife.”

Early testimonies focused on a note Denise had written. The note was found in a daily planner in the couple’s bedroom and read that Nathan was “hanging out with a 20-year-old” and humiliating her. Analysis of the handwriting revealed that the note had been written by Denise and that it had been written the same day she was killed.

It read in part:

“I really don’t think I did or didn’t do anything to deserve this. I was never good enough or did enough for you. I know you want me dead I’m not stupid, but I’m not that brave. I stop, you won’t like me anymore. No more of this game. If in 17 years I haven’t satisfied you, then nothing I will do will.

Police Officer Richard Linthicum told jurors that Nathan was standing across the street when he arrived at the scene. He said after finding Denise’s body, he came out and retrieved his bulletproof shield from the car and, gun drawn, waited for backup. While standing nearby, Nathan didn’t ask what was going on or ask if his wife was okay.

Inside, he said the scene didn’t fit the pattern of a burglary. The electronics in the living room had not been stolen and the drawers were placed on the floor rather than thrown away. A crime scene technician would agree and testify that the house showed no signs of a struggle. He would also testify that a black sweatshirt had been found in the closet and that sweatshirt had gunshot residue.

The jury would hear from 20-year-old Aina Dobilaite. She said she met Nathan in her home country of Lithuania when she was 6 years old. When she turned 18, Nathan took her to the United States to study. She described how Nathan paid her expenses, took her on trips, took pictures with her, but said she didn’t stay at his place.

She claimed she never told Nathan she was in love with him, but prosecutor Jerry Brady produced an email from Aina to Nathan promising to work harder on their relationship. It read: “I let you down. From now on I want to do everything for you and this relationship. I’m so blessed to have you in my life.” It was revealed that Nathan’s parents banned Aina from speaking to the police after Denise’s murder.

A cellmate of Nathan’s, David D. Smith, told the jury that Nathan confessed to Denise’s murder. He said he was waiting in the closet for his wife to come home. “They had words and then he shot her in the head,” he testified.

In the end, the jury would find Nathan Leuthold guilty of the murder of Denise Leuthold. It only took them 90 minutes to reach the destination. He would be sentenced to 80 years in prison. At the sentencing hearing, Judge Keith Lyons called Nathan a “thief” for robbing her children of their mother and taking Denise away from the rest of her family.

Denise’s parents were able to provide a victim impact statement. They said: “We are disgusted by his calculated evil plans. He stole the rest of our daughter’s life from us. We had to contend with Nathan’s hypocrisy when he claimed to be a man of God.”
