GLENN MILLER BIRTHPLACE

Glenn Miller’s childhood home

Shortly after the beginning of the 20th century, a boy was born to Elmer and Mattie Lou Miller in a small rural town in southwest Iowa. The date was March 1, 1904 and the city was Clarinda. Boy. The man born that night was named Alton Glenn Miller (later changed to Glenn), and when he uttered his first cry, Clarinda heard Glenn Miller’s first “moonlight serenade.” Glenn’s first serenade wasn’t particularly unique, having been sung by children for centuries and rarely heard on South 16th Street. However, his second “Moonlight Serenade” was a composition he composed while studying music with Dr. Schillinger wrote in New York City. Glenn’s second “Moonlight Serenade” was unique; became the theme song of his number one big band and was heard literally around the world

Glenn’s paternal grandparents were part of the westward movement of people during the 18th century and moved permanently to the Clarinda area in 1870 (Glenn’s grandfather Robert had lived in Page County before the Civil War, returned to Ohio after the war and then moved with his family moved to Page County in 1870). Their son Elmer, who was three years old when the family settled in Clarinda, grew up in Page County and married a local girl, Mattie Lou Cavender, in 1898. Mattie Lou (she also descended from Lulu and Lou) was born in Page County and grew up to be a respected teacher in Clarinda. In 1902, Elmer and Lou Miller bought the house at 601 S. 16th St. from C.H. Howard. The future big band leader was born here on March 1, 1904. Their first son Elmer “Deane” was born in 1901 in another house in Clarinda.

The Millers lived in the home from 1902 to 1906, when they sold their 16th Street home for $1,275 and moved to Tryon, Nebraska to occupy a 640-acre homestead under the Kincaid Act of 1904. During their homestead in Tryon they lived in a turf house. In the evenings, Glenn’s mother, Mattie Lou, played a simple pump organ, which helped ease the loneliness of the lowlands of Nebraska. Mattie Lou started a school called Happy Hollow and her children sang songs while riding in a wagon to school. His mother’s soothing music in her sod house and uplifting songs on the way to school must have given Glenn a greater meaning and appreciation for music. Life in a sod house was replaced by life in the city when Elmer moved the family to North Platte, Nebraska. Mattie Lou gave birth to a third son, John Herbert “Herb” in 1913 and a daughter Emma “Irene” in 1916 while living in North Platte.

Around 1917 Glenn’s family moved to Grant City, Missouri, where he attended elementary school. A businessman in town, John Mosbarger, was also the leader of the church band and wanted Glenn to join older brother Deane in the church band. However, Glenn had an old trombone. Mr. Mosbarger bought Glenn a new trombone so he could join the parish band, and in return Glenn worked for Mr. Mosbarger to pay for the new trombone.

In 1918 the Miller family moved to Fort Morgan, Colorado, where Glenn attended high school. During his senior year, Glenn decided to play football and at the end of the season he was voted “Best Left End in Colorado” by the Colorado High School Sports Association. Football wasn’t Glenn’s only interest, however, as he was very interested in a new sound called dance band music. Glenn liked this music so much that he and some classmates decided to start their own band. In fact, Glenn was so excited about this new music that when it came time to graduate in 1921, he decided to skip his graduation ceremonies and instead traveled to Laramie, Wyoming to play in a band. Meanwhile, Glenn’s mother had to pick up his diploma at home, and the headmaster commented, “Maybe you should get it anyway; You probably worked harder on it than he did!”

On March 1, 1989, Glenn Miller’s daughter, Jonnie Dee Miller, purchased the home where her father was born 85 years earlier. The Glenn Miller Birthplace Society manages the preservation, maintenance and interpretation of the home.

When the house was purchased very little was known of the house as it existed in 1904. Fortunately, news of the purchase was picked up by the Associated Press and appeared in newspapers around the world. As a result of this courtship, letters from Russia and Japan were sent to Clarinda. A letter from Bob Watson of Salem, Oregon proved very valuable. His parents had bought the house in 1907 (about a year after the Millers sold it) and he was very familiar with the site. As a result of this letter, the Watson family received several photos of the house.

The major restoration project began in March 1991. A 1912 addition was removed and the original roofline restored. The two main rooms of the house have the original floors and many of the lathe and plaster walls have been preserved. The original kitchen had been removed and replaced with a back porch. This had to be removed and a study conducted to determine the original footprint of the kitchen before it could be rebuilt. The front porch had been moved north and returned to its current location in accordance with the home’s original design. By carefully observing small clues, the missing details have been restored, bringing the house back to its original 1904 style. Furniture from this period and many family photos give visitors a feel for the early life of the Miller family. Memorabilia on display in the home includes a piano belonging to Glenn and Helen and a photograph of Glenn sitting at the piano and working on a musical score. Other exhibits include a copy of the first gold record ever awarded for Chattanooga Choo Choo, stills from Glenn’s two films, Orchestra Wives and Sun Valley Serenade, and stills from the Glenn Miller Story starring James Stewart and June Allyson. Many other personal items are on display, making the home an important place for anyone who loves Glenn Miller and his music. Click HERE for a timeline of early ownership of the property.

It is the goal of the Glenn Miller Birthplace Society to constantly strive to improve interpretation of the birthplace and to preserve and care for the home for the enjoyment of visitors from around the world. If you would like to help with this effort, you can make tax-deductible donations to the Glenn Miller Birthplace Society.
