Sam Bleiweis

Sam Bleiweis

Sam Bleiweis joined the WIS team as a reporter in June 2015. You can find them on the ground during the week to cover local stories and on afternoon and evening programs bringing you the latest developments from the Alert Center.

Before heading back south, Sam anchored and reported for Fox 40 News in Binghamton, New York. During her time on what she calls “the arctic tundra” (she’s a native Californian, and her family now lives in Florida!), she hosted the station’s 10 p.m. show, covering big stories in the southern plains and in the state of New York. Sam likes to be in the thick of things. She was at the center of the crowd as Binghamton University students staged a massive protest over the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown. She also followed and reported on the third murder trial of a local man, which spanned several months and received extensive national coverage.

Sam spent her undergraduate career at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, graduating with degrees in history and journalism. She was a four-year member of the Emory University women’s soccer team that finished second in the 2012 NCAA championships. She was also an active member of her sorority Alpha Delta Pi.

While in college, Sam spent a summer internship at a local broadcaster in her hometown of Gainesville, Florida, learning how to be behind and in front of the camera. During her senior year, she interned at WSB-TV and worked part-time as a reporter and color commentator for the Atlanta Silverbacks Professional Men’s Soccer Team.

When she’s not running around Columbia with her camera, the (residual) athlete in her can be found running in or in a loud, tough spin class. In her free time, she enjoys trying out new recipes in her kitchen or relaxing on the couch with a cup of tea, a good book and her two kittens.

Just months after arriving in Columbia, Sam was in Holly Hill at 3 a.m. when the small town began flooding during the historic 1,000-year flood. The stories she loves to tell are human interest, feature pieces that touch people’s hearts. One of the stories that struck her the most was that of a 5-year-old child with terminal cancer who was surprised with Disney on Ice tickets just weeks before she died. From a Santa Claus in a mall who needed a prosthetic leg, to the woman who knits scarves for the homeless and ties them to trees downtown, to an eighth-grader who sells soda to fund his college education Sam’s favorite stories about the community-minded people that make the Midlands so special.
