“The Ex-Girlfriend” is the first episode of the second season of the sitcom Seinfeld and the sixth overall episode of the show.[1] The episode first aired on NBC in the United States on January 23, 1991, after being delayed a week due to the start of the First Gulf War. During the show George Costanza breaks up with his girlfriend Marlene and leaves some books in her apartment. He convinces his friend Jerry to bring her back. Jerry begins dating Marlene, who annoys him just as much as George does, but he finds himself unable to break up with her because of her “psychosexual” influence on him.

Co-written by series co-creators Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, the episode was inspired by one of David’s personal experiences. Directed by Tom Cherones, The Ex-Girlfriend was the first episode of the show to be filmed at the CBS Studio Center in Los Angeles, California (and would remain there for the remainder of the show), with the previous season filmed in Desilu shot Cahuenga in Hollywood. After an emotional break, he realizes that he left some books in her apartment. Jerry tries to convince George that he doesn’t need the books since he has already read them, but George still persuades Jerry to get them for him. Jerry meets up with Marlene so he can get the books back. She tells him that despite their recent breakup, she and Jerry can still be friends. Jerry and Marlene start dating; Although Jerry finds her just as annoying as George and fears that George will be angry when he finds out they are dating, he realizes that she is a “psychosexual” influence on him.

Elaine is upset that a man she was once friends with no longer even gives her a nod of approval when she sees him. She finally works up the courage to aggressively confront him about it. David based the story on a personal experience of his driving home a woman who had recently dated a friend of his.[2] He often came up with an idea for an episode and, with Seinfeld’s help, made it into a teleplay; In a 1991 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Seinfeld explained, “Most of the stories are from [David’s] life. but Larry is really the designer of the show.”[2][5] David Sims of The A.V. Club commented, “Seinfeld kicked off his second season, his first proper season after a four-episode test run, very strongly with The Ex-Girlfriend, and it’s the first time we’ve really seen George as the character we know and love. this strange dark shadow of Larry David’s mind, behaving in ways no functioning human honestly could.”[6]

The chiropractor’s waiting room, where George believes he was overcharged for a visit, was the only new set to appear in the episode.

Although the scenes at Monk’s Cafe were filmed at the CBS Studio Center, the exterior of Tom’s Restaurant, a diner on Broadway and 112th Street in Manhattan, was used as the exterior for the cafe. The episode’s second scene, set on a street, was filmed on CBS Studio Center’s “New York Street,” a set consisting of four very small storefronts. During seasons one through five, “New York Street” was the only set the writers could use to recreate New York City. This scene and other scenes that take place in Jerry’s car were filmed on October 22 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. One or two crew members shook the car to give the impression that it was moving, although it actually never was. Other crew members moved lights around the set to simulate streetlights or headlights from other cars. Two lights were placed on a rolling stand behind the car to give the impression that there was a car behind. This technique is called the “Poor Man’s Process” because it is cheaper than other methods to achieve the effect.[2] The show previously experimented with this technique in the Season 1 episode “The Stake Out.”[11]

Some scenes in the episode were cut before airing. In the opening scene in Jerry’s car where George talks about breaking up with Marlene, George had originally suggested that he would stage his own kidnapping while walking down the street with Marlene and then hid until she gave him up. Although cut before the episode aired, this scene was included on the Seinfeld Volume 1 DVD set. Another scene that was cut showed Jerry’s neighbor Kramer entering Jerry’s apartment carrying a plate of honeydew melon on toothpicks. Originally, the scene where Jerry tells George he is dating Marlene took place in a library, with a librarian repeatedly silencing George and Jerry and throwing them out of the library at the end of the scene. The location was changed to Monk’s Cafe since the dialogue had nothing to do with a library.[2]

Although Seinfeld would be considered a hit show by today’s standards, NBC was disappointed with its ratings and after three weeks put the show on a two-month hiatus.[2]

Critics responded positively to the episode.[2][13] Joseph P. Kahn, a Wilmington Morning Star critic, called the episode’s writing and acting “far from hackneyed,” stating, “A safe bet, Seinfeld is going to be here for a long time this time (in terms of how it’s the first time the season only had five episodes).”[14] Salon.com’s Joyce Millman explained that she didn’t like Seinfeld’s pilot episode, but after seeing a scene from “The Ex-Girlfriend” involving Jerry and When Kramer discussed bringing back fruit, she was “impressed by Seinfeld and co-creator/writer Larry David’s brilliant understanding of A) working-class Jewish weirdness and B) the absurd humor of the profoundly mundane.”[15]

Entertainment Weekly’s Mike Flaherty and Mary Kaye Schilling called “The Ex-Girlfriend” “the most diverse (if not compelling) narrative of the series yet” and gave it a B rating.[4] David Sims gave the episode an A, writing, “George really is the most revolutionary character: he’s often repulsive and pathetic, but here are traits we heartily enjoy and sympathize with and want more of… The best.” The thing about this episode is that Jerry starts dating George’s ex-girlfriend almost immediately, which doesn’t cause drama in the group when almost any other sitcom would.”[6]

A relatively negative review came from Chicago Sun-Times critic Lon Grahnke, who criticized Seinfeld’s role in the episode: “[..] this comedy series has to ride on the shoulders of its star.
