triathlon [edit]

Alex started his 2018 triathlon season with a 6th place finish at the Gran Canaria ETU Sprint Triathlon European Cup, followed by an 8th place finish at the Cagliari ITU World Cup, returning to the scene of his accident a year earlier.

In June he competed in Antwerp and finished a disappointing 49th place (despite having the fastest run split),[15] and then he competed in the U23 category at the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in Gold Coast in September and came home 10th.[15] citation required]

Later that same month, he made it onto the podium for the first and only time of 2018, taking bronze at the ITU World Cup in Weihai.[16]

Alex made his debut in the ITU World Triathlon Series in Abu Dhabi with a sprint distance race on March 8, 2019. After a strong swim and bike ride, he recorded the second fastest 5K of the race and finished second behind Mario Mola in a race that saw 9 DNFs.[17]

He then competed in his first standard distance event of the ITU World Triathlon Series in Yokohama, Japan and finished 5th overall.

Later that same year he went on to achieve gold at Nottingham in the mixed team relay in June in less than ideal weather conditions which resulted in the race being changed to a duathlon format (run, bike, run). ] Georgia Taylor-Brown won Stage 1, followed by Ben Dijkstra, Sophie Coldwell in Stage 3 and Yee on the anchor stage to seal the win ahead of Switzerland in silver and France in bronze.[21]

This success followed a disappointing result in July in Hamburg where the team finished 10th overall, with the team consisting of Jess Learmonth, Jonny Brownlee, Georgia Taylor-Brown and Yee on the last stage. Super League Triathlon

Alex Yee could have pursued a career as an international track runner, but his love of triathlon has instead prevailed – and with two Olympic medals and a Super League Triathlon Championship Series title, that’s only too good. Born in Lewisham, London, Alex had a great natural talent for running from his school days at Kingsdale Foundation School, Dulwich. However, at this time he was also interested in many other sports including cricket and badminton. His running performance distinguished him as a star of the future. As a junior he ran faster 5k races than Mo Farah at the same age and in 2018 – after recovering from a horrific cycling accident – was crowned senior British champion and represented in the 10k with a time of 27:51:94 his country at the European Championships, where he finished 14th.

Encouraged by his father Ron to pursue his love of swim-bike-run, Yee developed an incredible all-around game that has him on the verge of replacing the Brownlee brothers as Britain’s top male short track triathletes. While cycling has come naturally to Alex, swimming has had a steeper learning curve and required more work, but the hard meters in the pool have paid off with increasingly impressive results.

As a junior and alongside his running, Alex has already secured medals with silver at the Junior European Cup in Holten in 2015 and gold at the Duathlon World Championships in 2016 and 2017. His junior career peaked with a fifth place finish in the 2016 ITU Grand Finals in Cozumel before a horror bike crash at the 2017 ITU World Cup event in Cagliari threatened to derail his promising career.

However, Alex fought back hard. He moved to Leeds to study Sport and Exercise Science at Leeds Beckett University and joined the UK triathlon training squad, including the Brownlee brothers. In 2018 he was back in full swing at the elite senior level, taking bronze and the World Cup event in Weihai in China before topping the podium in Cape Town.

Alex’s WTS debut in Abu Dhabi in 2019 earned him a spectacular Silver and Gold in the Nottingham Mixed Relay as part of the British team. In 2021 he proved his versatility at the SLT Arena Games with third place in London and second place in Rotterdam.

His participation in the Tokyo Olympics was in doubt until a few months ago when he took a stunning win at WTS Leeds and was selected. Confidence in him was fully justified as Alex clinched a silver medal in the individual event and gold as part of the UK mixed relay team alongside Georgia Taylor-Brown, Jess Learmonth and Jonny Brownlee.

This was followed by the remarkable feat of winning the 2021 Super League Triathlon Championship Series.

It started with a disappointing fifth place finish at his home race in London, but he made progress as the series progressed. He climbed the podium third in Munich before taking back-to-back victories in Jersey and Malibu to take the crown. The first of them saw a dramatic sprint finish with Jonathan Brownlee before repeating the feat against Marten Van Riel in California.

Alex moved his training base and home during lockdown to Loughborough, where he lives with his girlfriend, British triathlete Olivia Mathias.
