Andrew Velazquez

American baseball player

Not to be confused with Andrew Velasquez

baseball player

Andrew Velazquez (born July 14, 1994), nicknamed “Squid”, is an American baseball infielder for the Los Angeles Angels of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played in MLB for the Tampa Bay Rays, Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees. Velazquez made his MLB debut in 2018.

Early life and career[edit]

Velazquez hails from Morris Park in the Bronx, a borough of New York City.[1] His father, Kenneth, worked for the New York City Police Department for 20 years as a detective and undercover narcotics officer.[2]

Velazquez attended Fordham Preparatory School, where he played for the school’s baseball team. He played as a midfielder until his senior year when he became the team’s incipient shortstop. In his senior year, the New York Post named Velazquez its All-Bronx Baseball Player of the Year.[4] Velazquez also competed as a sprinter and high jumper on the Prep’s track team. He received an athletic scholarship to attend Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) to play college baseball for the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Career[edit]

Arizona Diamondbacks[ edit ]

The Arizona Diamondbacks selected him in the seventh round with the 243rd overall pick of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft. He signed with the Diamondbacks and received a $200,000 signing bonus, bypassing his involvement with Virginia Tech. That year, he made his professional debuts with the Arizona League Diamondbacks at the rookie level and with the Missoula Osprey of the Pioneer League.

In 2013, Velazquez was assigned to the South Bend Silver Hawks of the Class A Midwest League. For the season, he had a .260 batting average but had almost three times as many strikeouts as walks. When Velazquez returned to South Bend in 2014, he set a minor league baseball record with his 72nd straight game, beating the record of 71 set by Kevin Millar in 1997 and equaled by Kevin Youkilis in 2003. His streak, which lasted from April 22 to July 16, ended at 74 consecutive games.[12][13] After the season, Velazquez was named Midwest League Prospect of the Year.[13] While playing in the Diamonbacks system, he earned the nickname “Squid”.[14]

Tampa Bay Rays[edit]

On November 14, 2014, the Diamondbacks traded Velazquez and Justin Williams to the Tampa Bay Rays for Jeremy Hellickson. He started the 2015 season with the Charlotte Stone Crabs of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League but underwent surgery in May to repair a broken hamate bone. He finished the season with .290/.343/.360 in 47 games. He returned to Charlotte in 2016, where he finished a shortened season due to injury with .262/.313/.308 in 75 games. Velazquez played for the Montgomery Biscuits of the Class AA Southern League in 2017 and for Montgomery and the Durham Bulls of the Class AAA International League in 2018.

On September 2, 2018, the Rays promoted Velazquez to the Major League. He recorded three hits in ten at-bats played off the bench. Although Velazquez only played 34.2 innings and made only one start, he played at least one inning at six positions (second base, shortstop, third base, left field, middle field, and right field).

Cleveland Indians[ edit ]

On July 3, 2019, the Rays traded Velazquez to the Cleveland Indians for international bonus pool awards. In a corresponding move, the Indians designated Chih-Wei Hu for use.[22] Cleveland assigned Velazquez to the International League’s Columbus Clippers and promoted him to the major leagues on September 17. He appeared in five games for Cleveland and registered one hit, one double, in 11 at-bats.

Velazquez was drafted on February 14, 2020 when they signed Domingo Santana.[24]

Baltimore Orioles[ edit ]

Velazquez was claimed by the Baltimore Orioles of waivers on February 19, 2020. In 2020, Velazquez pared .159/.274/.206 for the Orioles with no homers and three RBIs. On October 29, 2020, Velazquez was dropped entirely from the 40-man roster.[27] He became a free agent on November 2, 2020.[28]

New York Yankees[edit]

On December 16, 2020, Velazquez signed a minor league contract with the New York Yankees organization. On July 16, 2021, Velazquez was released from the Yankees organization but re-signed with the team on a new minor league contract the next day. On August 9, the Yankees promoted Velazquez to the major leagues.[31] On August 10, 2021, Velazquez hit his first Yankees run on a wild field.

In seven straight at-bats against the Boston Red Sox, Velazquez had three run-scoring hits with 4 RBIs (one own run and one stolen base). After ending the final game with a jump catch at shortstop and a difficult throw to first base from deep in the hole, his teammates awarded him the well-deserved “Game Belt” in recognition of his contributions to the streak that the team saw at first advance place of wild card standings; two games ahead of rival Red Sox.[32]

On August 21, Velazquez hit his first career home run outside pitcher Ralph Garza during a home game against the Minnesota Twins at Yankee Stadium.

On September 11, after the team’s win over the New York Mets, Velazquez was demoted to the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate, the Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. He was recalled to the Yankees prior to the Oct. 2 penultimate game of the regular season.

Los Angeles Angels[edit]

On November 5, 2021, Velazquez was released from waivers by the Los Angeles Angels. He opened the 2022 season with the Salt Lake Bees in the Class AAA Pacific Coast League and was promoted to the major leagues on April 12 to be shortstop due to an injury to David Fletcher.[2]

Bronx heroes Andrew Velazquez and Andrew Heaney saved the Yankees

Thanks to Andrew Velazquez, Andrew Heaney and Lucas Luetge, it feels a little like 2019 up here for the New York Yankees.

This season, the Next Man Up magic didn’t quite last until October. When Giancarlo Stanton went down before Game 2 of the ALDS, it was one injury too many for the Yankees’ MASH unit.

This year’s date was a little different, but the regular season results were nearly identical.

“I dreamed about it.” —Andrew Velazquez pic.twitter.com/TVhSRPQn5Q — New York Yankees (@Yankees) August 19, 2021

In August of that year, the Yankees officially turned the tide with a four-game win over the Red Sox (including a doubleheader on Saturday) in the Bronx, burying a Red Sox roster that seemed to have forgotten to buy into deadline day. In August? One less game in the series, just as much majesty and a similar level of inactivity at trade deadlines for the street team.

Most fans would have been satisfied with a double and a loss in the Andrew Heaney game. It wouldn’t have been Heaney, on the other hand, and he’s put enough negativity in our faces with seven two-hit innings.

Further information

Bronx native Andrew Velazquez (did we mention he’s Bronx native?) was single twice and had one run in ninth place. In the ninth inning, with two outs and the tie on the plate, he settled into the hole to his right and fired a laser across the diamond into Anthony Rizzo’s wildly well-positioned glove. The parade was made by Lucas Luetge.’

That was a spectacular achievement. Against all odds, it was also the second most impressive incident we saw in the Bronx tonight.

Andrew Heaney gave up his 16th earned run in 16 innings with the Yankees in the first inning on Wednesday. Aside from the underbelly, a tussling Zack Britton and an ailing Aroldis Chapman, no one was waiting for him in the bullpen.

Instead of folding the ball in the second and handing it to a helper, which would have led to another lifeless and sweepless series, Heaney stuck to his guns. He was in command of the top of the zone. Andrew walked a hitter he couldn’t outsmart if he had to. He turned and attacked again. He never broke his own beat.

After pitching six innings and conceding two hits, he went BACK OUT against the heart of the order for the seventh inning. He ended that too.

Two years later, the Yankees return with “Next Man Up,” repeating an old favorite in search of a different outcome.
