1. We should start with a little background on your childhood and school background.
I grew up on the North Shore of Montreal, actually in Laval. I started doing sports when I was 4 years old and wasn’t really sure what I liked at the time. I’ve tried so many sports… football, tennis, swimming, you name it. It wasn’t until my mother had the idea of introducing me to scuba diving that I discovered the sport that would become my lifelong passion. Throughout elementary school, my mother would pick me up between shifts so I could go to my surgeries. After that, I was enrolled in a sport étude program in high school, which allowed me to practice scuba diving with my classmates, Monday through Friday, 1pm-3pm and 4pm-6pm daily. It gave my mother, who was still and always heavily involved in my career, a little break.
2. Who would normally accompany you if you participated in the Olympic Games?
Since we hadn’t planned for me to go to the Beijing Olympics and it was a bit of a surprise, I went to my first Olympics with just my coach. But at the two following Olympic Games, I was accompanied by my parents! When I won my bronze medal in London, I even had the opportunity to cheer her on from the bench.
3. Let’s talk about your mother, did she take part in your numerous competitions?
My mother always tried to come to my house as often as possible. If it was a provincial or national competition, she almost always came, but my many international competitions were a bit out of reach at times. Despite that, she cheered me on in almost every single competition I’ve entered in Canada. She even has this tradition where she and my grandmother go to Windsor, which is a 12 hour drive, to see me compete in the Diving World Series every year.
4. Do you think your mother made many sacrifices to help you achieve your dreams?
She does that very often. Not only did she make sacrifices for me, she made sacrifices for our entire family. My mom was always there to encourage us and push us to do our best. She was also always there to remind me of my values and the reasons I started diving in the first place whenever I went through a rough patch. She always believed in me, she told everyone for years that her little girl was going to the Olympics… look at me now!
5. What was the most beautiful moment you shared with your mother?
I’ve always had a great relationship with my mother, she is my confidante and my best friend. There are times when I don’t want to tell her everything because I know she will be right about the one thing that bothers me. But she always finds out before I tell her. I think the best moment I had with my mom was when I offered her a plane ticket for her birthday so she could visit me at the 2015 Toronto Pan American Games. I was so glad she was there because she was watching me with everyone in the crowd beating my personal dive record for the day. It was one of the most memorable moments of my life and I am grateful that my mother was there as she has been and always will be a huge part of my success.
