With ‘no quit in him,’ UCLA’s Jules Bernard thrives off relentlessness

Jules Bernard cried a lot as a newborn and earned his nickname in the family. He was nicknamed Noni by his mother after staring into his brown eyes and trying everything to relieve his colic on a restless night.

“I’m like, ‘No, no, no, ne, no, ne, no,'” Kristene Bernard said, recalling her tired state.

UCLA fans had a similar reaction after watching Jules run into the paint in his first two seasons. He often ran into a wall of defenders and lost the ball, fell or took too many steps. The size and strength that had allowed the 6-foot-6 guard to score with just about everyone in high school couldn’t offer the same advantage at the major college level.

This time, amidst the discomfort of racking up almost twice as many turnovers as assists, there would be no coddling. There would be no whimpers either.

The days of sulking about poor performance were long gone. Bernard’s parents never spoiled him once he outgrew his onesies, his mother recorded his youth basketball games on an iPad and showed him the undeniable evidence every time he denied he had played poorly. Car trips home were associated with constructive criticism.

“I was sulking at the time,” Bernard said, “but I kind of got used to it and started not really listening to the tone they were using to speak to me anymore, but to the message.”

This made him the perfect student for Mick Cronin, the Bruins manager, who preferred an equally pointed approach. Cronin told Bernard that he needed to do more thinking and read defenses so he could make better decisions about when to pass, take a shot or make one of his forays towards the basket.

The result was a coming-of-age season for the junior, who turns 21 on Thursday, when the No. 24 Bruins (11-2, 7-0 Pac-12) vs. California (7-8, 2-6) line up pavilion. Bernard helped UCLA avoid embarrassment against Washington last weekend by leading the Bruins with 20 points and nine rebounds while committing zero turnovers in a narrow win over a last-place team, leading Cronin to list him as a to designate the toughest player on the team.

He averages career bests in points (10.4) and rebounds (5.3) while making 47.3% of his shots and 38.9% of his three-pointers. Equally important, he will end a season with more assists than turnovers for the first time.

“He’s undergone a tremendous transformation,” Cronin said. “He’s got a great attitude, he’s willing to learn, so he’s never been outraged or defiant. I mean it’s hard to change your game.”

Bernard’s persistence at UCLA among multiple coaches is well known to those who have followed his career. At Los Angeles Windward High, he played for three coaches in about a year and survived while high-profile teammates Shareef O’Neal, Payton Moore and Christian James all made substitutions.

Windward trainer Colin Pfaff often found his phone bombarded with early-morning messages on Saturdays, and Bernard asked to head to the gym for extra target practice. He’s scored more than goals in games, once grabbing 30 rebounds and sometimes playing out of position on power forwards to help his team.

His blend of speed and power was in part the result of good genes, his mother, a former high school basketball player who could shoot three-pointers, and his father – also known as Jules – came from a family of decorated sprinters in Trinidad. Both parents have snagged rebounds for their son during visits to campus that often involve stops in his room, where they marvel at his meticulous cleanliness and organization to the way he inventories his perfectly folded shirts.

Bernard, a fashionista with a contemporary, European bent, even recognized one of Cronin’s Audemars Piguet watches during a break. Last season, Cronin’s first season after replacing Steve Alford and caretaker manager Murry Bartow, it might have seemed like the clock was ticking as to whether Bernard could maximize his potential.

“I think Jules got frustrated at times, and I’m sure Coach Cronin got frustrated at times because Jules flipped it or some rabbits were missing the paint, things like that,” said Pfaff, who remains close to Bernard. “But because Coach Cronin is who he is and sticks to it and is consistent and honest and transparent, the guys can work with that and Jules especially can work with that because he’s going to work.”

Bernard majors in Economics but might as well minor in Film Studies considering how much time he spends watching feature films with his coaches and parents. He’s learned to keep his follow-through longer and ensure his feet are on three pointers while developing more confidence when going right rather than relying on his natural left-handed bias.

His ability to read defenses has improved as he not only tracks the player directly in front of him but also those who might come together to stop him if he tries to drive towards the basket.

“If I see there’s a tight gap and I can’t hit it, I won’t take it,” Bernard said, “or if I see there’s an open lane, I’ll be ready to take the gap as soon as possible before the defense is set up.”

Another potential obstacle surfaced ahead of this season with the arrival of Johnny Juzang, a 6-6 guard who transferred from Kentucky to take Bernard’s spot on the starting lineup after Juzang recovered from a stress reaction in his right foot. Bernard shrugged and thrived off the bench, averaging 12 points over the next three games before returning to the starting lineup after guard Chris Smith’s season-ending knee injury.

“Jules has a great work ethic,” Cronin said. “He never makes a playoff, he goes after every loose ball, he never sits out. He never claims to be tired; I mean, the guy’s work ethic allows him to improve. This guy has no end.”
