This sequence has been found to occur in only about 1 in 100 dogs. dr Elizabeth Wictum, director of the UC Davis lab that conducted the tests, said the results, while significant, did not clearly point to Williams’ German shepherd as the source. This is because the lab could only test for mitochondrial DNA, which unlike nuclear DNA, cannot be positively identified for a dog.
The FBI then ran DNA tests on the two human hairs found on Patrick Baltazar. The mitochondrial DNA sequence in hair would eliminate 99.5% of individuals by mismatching their DNA. The mitochondrial DNA sequence in the hair would eliminate 98% of African American individuals because their DNA mismatch. However, they matched Williams’ DNA and therefore could not rule out Williams as the source of the DNA.
