Spencer Sanders Has Matured in Front of his Teammate’s and Coach’s Eyes

Spencer Sanders has matured. It’s off the field, but that maturity that he has now should make him a better quarterback on the field.

STILLWATER — I asked Spencer Sanders to tell me about the best fish he’s caught this summer that got Sanders digging in his phone. He said he thought he took a picture of it. He stopped and showed me a wild boar from the hunt. He passed several fish and finally showed me a picture of his tackle.

“I took that before I went out and that was the day I caught the fish,” Sanders said. “I don’t think I took a picture of it. It was at least a three, I’d give him a three. I caught it at Coach Dunn’s house.”

Sanders fished a lot, he always has, but he doesn’t let it bother football and quarterbacks. The last six months of COVID-19 have been a maze for everyone, and for Sanders it started at home.

Sander’s family, (from left) mother – Carrie, Spencer, father – David, sister – Carissa. Twitter

“I need to see my family,” Sanders said. “That’s always good. My mother is my No. 1, nobody comes before her. It’s always nice to see my mother.

Mom is Carrie and Dad is David. Carrie is an Oklahoman native who was a hell of a basketball player in Kingfisher high school. She was a really good athlete and it seems that Spencer and his sister, a former standout soccer player in North Texas, inherited their mother’s athletic ability.

“No discrediting for pops. I love my pops, but I’m definitely a mama’s boy,” Sanders said. “It was good. I was really able to spend time with my mother. I could say I feel like a young man. I had a chance to show my mom, to live with my mom for six months and show her.”

Sanders has gone from mama’s boy to coaching project and may be close to a completed project for quarterback coach Tim Rattay. Rattay came in as the first quarterback coach under Mike Gundy to not call plays. Rattay, who has played and coached in the NFL, has been outstanding for Sanders. His student sees him not only as a sharp-witted football teacher, but also as a good person who is just as exemplary away from football as he is in football. Spencer calls Rattay a great “family man”.

“I think our relationship is great. I think we not only have a football relationship, we can also talk to each other on a personal level,” said Sanders enthusiastically. “I mean, I’ve dealt with a few situations that I didn’t want to deal with, but he was always a phone call away. He’s always just a willing helping hand and anything that goes on, whether it’s something to do with football I always call him first before I go to Gundy or coach Dunn. I feel like our connection is very strong because not only do I talk to him every day, but I also respect him as a coach and love him as a person. ”

After the home time and during the time he was home, there were the many Zoom meetings with Rattay and the other quarterbacks. There were phone conversations with Rattay. Sanders set sail and was headquartered in Owasso and Tulsa and spent time throwing in Dillon Stoner and Landon Wolf with his receivers in Green Country. Then, back in Stillwater, there was plenty of meeting time and plenty of field time in the form of OTA workouts allowed to work with Rattay.

Sanders will be a big reason this Oklahoma State team really over-or underperforms. Sanders isn’t the only factor, but he’s an important factor and showing improvement. I love watching Sanders and Rattay interact. It’s not intense, almost casual and relaxed. It’s consistent and Sanders says it’s helpful and good to have Rattay on the sidelines rather than on the other end of the ringdown phone speaking from the coaching room.

Tim Rattay coaches Sanders and Peyton Thompson. Robert Allen – Editor of the Pokes Report

“I think he can get on my cock a lot easier, but I think it’ll honestly help me,” Sanders told media in the Zoom interview. “Because if you think about it, just think about when you were a kid and your mom scolds you on a phone call, you can hold it over here and just play it off, but when he looks you in the face it’s like, ‘Okay ‘Let’s go, give it to me.’”

Sanders doesn’t love to provide the media, but he has a great personality and is expressive. And now Sanders is more mature, according to teammates like receiver Tylan Wallace.

“You can just tell he’s matured so much compared to last year,” Wallace expressed in his Zoom call. “He’s kind of stepping in, stepping up and being a more vocal leader than last year. He gets people going, he does the right things he needs to do when it comes to QB play, gets the right reads and stays in the bag. I just feel like he’s really matured a whole lot compared to last year.

That’s good news for the Cowboys on Saturday and not so good for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.

Sanders suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter of the 2020 season opener game against Tulsa and missed the following game. He finished the season with 2,007 passing yards with 14 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Sanders was named the 2020 Cheez-It Bowl MVP after rushing for 305 yards and four touchdowns in a 37-34 win over the Miami Hurricanes.[15]

Sanders missed the opener of his junior redshirt season against Missouri State after testing positive for COVID-19.[16] He rushed for 214 yards and a touchdown and 93 yards and another touchdown in Oklahoma State’s 37–33 rivalry game win over Oklahoma. Sanders was named a first-team All-Big 12 after completing 243 of 392 pass attempts for 2,839 yards and 20 touchdown passes against 12 interceptions and 668 rushing yards with six touchdowns.
