Over a decade, two figure skating partners have been through it all A romance, a breakup and now, Olympic medals

Listen 6 min Comment on this story Comment on the gift item Share

Before becoming partners in 2011, Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue were teenage rivals and they weren’t exactly crazy about skating together. “We actually didn’t like each other at all when we started skating together — like neither of us wanted to skate together,” Donohue, 31, told The Washington Post this week via Zoom from Beijing while seated next to Hubbell, 30.

Hubbell agreed, explaining that at first the two would “push each other’s buttons” like teenagers in a romantic comedy. “He thought I was a brat and I thought he was a jerk and we were going to get it out there.”

But it didn’t take long for that friction to grow into something profound — an emotional and physical connection that Hubbell said helped her break down her inhibitions on the ice and that Donohue called extraordinary. Thus began a partnership that would last more than a decade, which she’s propelled through a romantic relationship, a breakup, multiple championships and now two medals at the 2022 Games.

Hubbell and Donohue’s rhythm dance routine helped earn the United States a silver medal in the team competition, while their free dance earned the pair a bronze medal — the first Olympic medals of their careers and very likely their last, the two announced plans to be in soon the retirement.

Her dances have been described as particularly intimate. When Hubbell and Donohue began the free dance program that eventually earned them a bronze, NBC commentator and former Olympian Johnny Weir said the duo’s “performances feel like you’re seeing something behind closed doors.”

But they broke up long ago and have moved on to other romantic relationships. Hubbell is engaged to Spanish figure skater Adrián Díaz, who competed in this year’s Olympics, and Donohue is dating Australian figure skater Chantelle Kerry.

When their romantic lives parted ways off the ice, Hubbell and Donohue managed to continue working together on the rink, building the confidence and dependability needed to excel at their sport’s most elite competitions. This level of collaboration and partnership has left many who have experienced breakups wondering: How did they pull it off?

advertisement

“It’s an innate part of our shared chemistry,” Donohue said. “I don’t think it’s definable.”

Hubbell said Donohue was the only person able to handle what she described as her powerful, zany and sexual personality on the ice. “The reality was, I never questioned if there was another option for me,” she said, even in the couple’s lowest moments.

Hubbell and Donohue’s partnership began in 2011 when both were training in Detroit. They only knew each other from competitions and got on each other’s nerves at first.

But after a few exercises they discovered something special.

Hubbell said the feeling was exhilarating. She said both are “powerful and aggressive” skaters. As they continued to train and compete together, Hubbell said, Donohue helped her become less self-conscious.

advertisement

“Out of that evolution, at 18, 19, finally being able to not be scared of looking like a woman, not scared to express myself more sexually — I think that’s part of what led to it romantic connection,” Hubbell said.

It happened gradually, then suddenly. Partying with friends led to flirting and then, boom: “It was like, ‘Oh, we kissed once — I think we’re together forever,’ and we started dating right away,” Hubbell said.

For the first six to eight months, the romance “ran smooth sailing,” Hubbell said, even as her coaches recognized and discouraged the relationship. But it wasn’t their coaches, but rather their early victories on the ice that marked the beginning of the couple’s decline, Hubbell said. The skaters began to wonder if their relationship would jeopardize their careers.

advertisement

The pair began experiencing an “ebb and flow” relationship around the time of their first World Figure Skating Championships in 2012. They fought frequently on and off the rink. Even their friends took notice, telling them, “You’re either good on the date or you’re good on the ice, and not both,” Hubbell said.

After 2½ years of relationship, they decided on their sporting partnership. It was never a question of stopping skating together, Hubbell and Donohue said.

“I think that made it easier — knowing that we wanted to keep skating and that there wasn’t anyone we could both skate with,” Donohue said, adding, “Nobody we even considered.” .”

It took time to understand the limitations of their new partnership and build trust. While Donohue said there’s never been a loss of physical confidence on the ice, “there’s a lot of anger that comes with a breakup, and there’s blaming and self-judgment.”

advertisement

“It definitely took a lot of work and communication to build a level of trust that we have in each other that we never actually had,” he said.

Donohue said it took several years to be in a true place of “appreciation and gratitude for the other person.” And it wasn’t until after the 2018 PyeongChang games, where the pair suffered disappointment in fourth place, that they realized there were still unresolved issues.

They’ve made progress, Hubbell said, “but not nearly as much as we want, and we want to get back to what we consider a healthy relationship.”

Now, having won two Olympic medals, Hubbell and Donohue have arguably reached the peak of their careers. And as you look towards retirement, a lot will change.

“We spent every day together, for 11 years basically, and we’re going to be doing shows and all these things in the future, but we’re not going to be together every day, and that’s going to be tough and different,” Hubbell said. “And so we’re just taking it in the way we can.”

Olympians Madison Chock and Evan Bates Are in Love Off the Ice They Talk ‘Chemistry’ and Wedding Plans

“We’re so lucky because we have this thing that we share, this ice dance, which is our own little corner of the universe,” Bates tells PEOPLE about competing with his girlfriend

Olympians Madison Chock and Evan Bates make love off the ice as they discuss ‘chemistry’ and wedding plans

There’s a word that describes the easy communication between Olympic ice dancers Madison Chock and Evan Bates, who have been together for about five years.

“Chemistry,” Bates, 32, said in a recent interview with PEOPLE before he and Chock, 29, traveled to Beijing for the Winter Olympics.

Receive push notifications with news, features and more.

“It’s always been like this, even before we were together,” Bates says of their bond. “We’d kinda look at each other and smile.”

Adds Chock, “When you skate together, you don’t always talk and don’t always want to talk when you practice. It can be very physically and mentally challenging to see each other’s signals – and over the years, after being on the ice together for so long and then off the ice again, you start to pick up on the nuances of the other person and understand what drives them or which ones kind of mood she has just by looking at her body language. And that’s really helpful when we want to conserve our energy and just put everything into our training.”

It also strengthens them in competition.

The pair helped Team USA win a silver medal – their first – in the skating team event.

They could also make it onto the podium in the individual ice dancing that ends Sunday night (Eastern). After the first half of the competition, Chock and Bates were in fourth place with 84.14 points, just behind American teammates Madison Hubbell and Zach Donohue.

If they continue to skate at this level, they will see a huge improvement over their previous Olympic performances. (They finished ninth in their individual event in 2018, their last games.)

But that’s not the only thing that matters.

“We don’t feel like we have to go there and make amends for everything that happened in the past,” Bates says.

He explains, “I think the growth that we’ve achieved and the success that we’ve had over the past three and a half years … has already been so successful that what happens in Beijing won’t necessarily matter if we feel like it was worth it.”

Choc agrees. “We just felt like there was more to draw on,” she says. “There was a missing piece that we wanted to explore and we really just wanted to be the best we could possibly be and push ourselves because we’re students of the sport. We love to learn. We are constantly learning and trying to broaden our horizons.”

Changes they’ve made as skaters since the 2018 Winter Olympics have included a geographic shift — moving to Montreal — and a series of spirited changes. For example, instead of taking one vacation a year, they’ve started taking multiple breaks and found “a lot of refreshment” in them, says Bates.

Recovery, both say, is key.

Such is their connection to one another.

“We learned so much from skating and experienced so many ups and downs that we found such a deep support for each other and such a deep communication that we continue to work on and encourage through our sport,” says Chock. “And that’s been really helpful for our relationship off the ice, to have learned those lessons and to be able to deal with that kind of stress, pressure and excitement.”

The couple first announced they were dating in late 2017, after about a year together. Bates told NBC he was the one to make the first move (although they had dated years before as teenagers).

“I pretty much told Maddie I love her,” Bates said in 2018.

Their shared love of their sport supports their romance and vice versa, Bates tells PEOPLE.

“We’re so lucky because we have this thing that we share, this ice dance, which is our own little corner of the universe,” he says. “And it’s something we can put everything into together. We are very passionate about it. We push each other, we inspire each other, we exchange ideas, we go back and forth. It’s our job, but it doesn’t feel like our job.”

“We are inherently different in many ways,” he continues. “And I find the further we go the more those divisions fade away a little bit and we, I don’t want to use the word hive mind, but we share a lot of the same thoughts and a lot of the same intuition.”

Madison Chock and Evan Bates From left: Madison Chock and Evan Bates celebrate after a 2019 competition | Credit: MARK RALSTON/AFP via Getty

“Maddie has always been someone who skated with an open heart and her performer self came out as soon as she stepped onto the ice. And of course I was more of an analytical person or someone who was just in another room,” says Bates. “And we’ve been working a lot on it, kind of—”

Chock chimes in: “We help each other fill in the gaps.”

On Sunday night’s ice, the two will skate to a Daft Punk medley for their free dance, with a routine that mixes an interstellar theme with more techno-modern influences than the average viewer might expect. (They also ran to Billie Eilish in their rhythm dance.)

“We’re proud that in some way we’re pushing the sport and that we stand out from the crowd,” said Bates. “Our goal is to expand the sport and attract new fans and hopefully inspire people to step onto the ice themselves and dream of being in the Olympics one day,” he adds.

Chock says they knew it was a “risky decision” — “but high risk, high reward,” she says. “And we felt like we really wanted to use a program that showcased our creativity and uniqueness as a couple.”

What’s next in her personal life? The pair – Chock in their third game, Bates in his fourth – are already leaving Beijing with at least one Olympic medal. They say there is no set date for wedding bells.

And while Bates hasn’t proposed yet, they’re talking about specific details. Just in case.

“We like to discuss where we want it,” says Chock.

“Yeah,” says Bates, “we’re like, ‘Oh, that’s a nice place, let’s do a little research there.’ ”

Their future wedding will have to hold while they see the rest of their skate career.

“We don’t decide to retire after the season,” Bates tells PEOPLE. “We are still very passionate about skating. We still feel young and we still feel that there is room for improvement and growth. And I keep hearing about four games and being one of the oldest skaters. And I’m like, ‘How did that happen? happen?’ I don’t feel like I’m as experienced as that sounds.”

Chock says: “If we decide to retire, we’re definitely going to have a big celebration. And that probably includes a wedding.”
