Born with spina bifida, a spinal cord birth defect, Aaron “Wheelz” Fotheringham cannot use his legs and has never been able to walk. Instead, he does something even better: He can fly.
“My doctor said I wouldn’t be able to sit up on my own or do anything,” Aaron recalls. “I think from a young age it was always in the back of my mind, like, ‘Ok, I have to prove that I can do more than that.'”
At 23, he is a pioneer in the burgeoning sport of WMX, or wheelchair motocross, and one of the world’s first extreme wheelchair athletes.
In 2006, “Wheelz” – as he’s affectionately known to friends and competitors alike – landed his first wheelchair backflip and has since pushed himself and his aerodynamic chair for more.

Aaron was born with spina bifida, a spinal cord birth defect that caused him to be unable to use his legs. He is the third of six children, all adopted.
Nothing can stop Aaron with the power to manifest his incredible spirit. Even as a baby and toddler he did everything that others his age could do; he just had to figure out how to make it work for him. He rolled over, sat up, and even crawled (on his hands and stomach, no leg movement) pretty much according to plan. Within days of receiving his first rollator, he was on the road. Next came crutches, which he quickly mastered. He would put on a Superman cape and whiz around the hall on crutches, believing like any other 4-year-old that he could fly.
Aaron started riding skate parks at the age of 8 when his older brother Brian, a BMXer, told him to come over. He’d been going to the park with Brian and their dad for weeks, but Aaron just watched from behind the fence. The first time was scary and he fell badly, but he never gave up just because it wasn’t easy. So he tried again and from then on he was hooked.
Early in his career, Aaron competed in and won a few BMX freestyle competitions, including the legendary Vegas AmJam BMX Finals in 2005, but for Aaron that always came second to enjoying the ride and hanging out with friends at all the Las Vegas skate parks .
Aaron has a passion for what he does. Not only is it a lot of fun, but he also wants to change the world’s perception of people in wheelchairs and help everyone see their own challenges in a new way. Aaron’s appeal is universal. You certainly don’t have to be disabled to be inspired by what he can do.
Over the years, Aaron has challenged himself to come up with even more difficult stunts. In 2005 he perfected a 180 degree turn in the air. Then, on July 13, 2006, he landed the first backflip in a wheelchair. Four years later, he landed his first-ever double backflip at a camp in Woodward (August 26, 2010). Since then he has performed live on tour with the Nitro Circus. As if that wasn’t enough, on February 9, 2011 he landed his first ever frontflip in New Zealand and on August 25, 2012 he shocked the Brazilians by jumping a 50 foot gap off the Mega Ramp and successfully landing his chair. He is a four-time WCMX World Championship winner and recently performed the first Wheelchair Flair/Backflip 180.
After posting his very first backflip on the internet, life changed for Aaron; He has had the opportunity to travel worldwide, both performing and speaking. He has attended summer camps for disabled children as a coach/mentor. He’s been featured in magazines, newspapers and sports TV, and of course he receives and replies to emails from all over the world.
Aaron loves to show children with disabilities that a wheelchair can be an aid, not a limitation. He loves helping younger children find new and different ways to use their chairs and teaching them a trick or two. He hopes to one day design and build the world’s funkiest chair.
