Angela Lewis has been widely acclaimed for bringing the complex “Auntie Louie” character to life in FX’s hit crime drama Snowfall, created by the late legendary filmmaker John Singleton. The drama series explores the complex dynamics of the crack cocaine epidemic in 1980s Los Angeles.

You play a complex character in Snowfall. How was that experience and how do you prepare for the role?
It is every actor’s expectation and dream to play complex characters. If a character isn’t layered, we’ll do whatever we can to create more layers. So, I’m thrilled that Louie is complicated! Navigating the complex waters of her psyche is both daunting and satisfying. I prepare by thoroughly understanding the scene, the episode, the cues in both, and Louie’s personal cues. I play around with how she feels about things and what would happen if things don’t go the way she intended. I just do my best to get my imagination running wild.
Tell us about your move to L.A. to pursue your acting career while having a little baby.
Well, all in divine, perfect order! I got married and my husband [actor J. Mallory Cree] was dying to move to L.A. and I was curious. So we made the move a part of the wedding plan. We moved in 2014. Snowfall came in 2016 and the baby came in 2019. I hadn’t planned anything other than moving. I set my intentions and dreamed and lived my life by those dreams, but the timing was more perfect than I could have ever planned.

Her family encouraged her creative talents from an early age. How did that help you achieve your dreams professionally?
Since my family encouraged my talents from a young age, I feel deeply supported, and that’s tremendous. Actors are said “no” so often that the business can do real damage to your self-esteem if you don’t have built-in support and/or confidence. Having my family behind me the whole time was life saving.
How is your daughter and how would you describe the parenting style of you and your husband?
My daughter is amazing! She blows my mind every day. She is a communicator. She was very clear with her needs and wants. She’s not fully speaking yet, but if she’s whining too much and I ask her to use her words, she’ll immediately find a way to make very clear what she’s trying to convey.
My husband and I really resonate with the whole brain child/no drama discipline approach mixed in with some Montessori play/learning. I really want my daughter to be an independent thinker, fully aware of herself and her connection to the earth and humanity. We want to encourage their creativity and what is inherent in it.
Our task is to show her possibilities and help her as much as possible to avoid danger. We love them very much and want to honor and respect their autonomy. While she still wants to hold hands, I’ll gluttonously bask in her affection. When she’s ready to let go, I’ll cry my tears, open my arms (and my eyes…Mom’s always watching), and believe with everything I have that she’ll always find her way back to me.
What insights have you gained on your journey to motherhood?
Here’s what I planned for my birth and what actually happened. I had planned a sacred and tranquil natural water birth in a birth center to welcome my baby girl into the world. She chose hospital action and adventure instead! I want all moms-to-be (especially those who are black and brown) to know that they have more choices than they think and that the key is education and access to resources. Get a doula. Your doula can help you ask questions you may not have thought of. Your doula can help advocate for you, especially in the hospital system. There are resources out there. Whatever you want, whatever you need, whatever you dream up, take a closer look with it.
I wish I knew childbirth is the wild wild west. You can plan anything you want, and you absolutely should, but at the end of the day, your baby will come out the way he wants to be born.
I want everyone to know that black and brown mothers-to-be and their babies die in their birthing rooms and after birth. It doesn’t have to be. Black and brown moms-to-be are unheard and their lives underestimated. Help me ensure these mothers have access to education, advocacy and resources. Black Lives Matter.
