WDIA’s Bobby O’Jay Died Doing What He Loved

Tuesday morning just before 9 a.m. when the phone lines are open, WDIA program director Bobby O’Jay fell unconscious during his show. He suffered a fatal massive heart attack.

Just minutes after midnight early Wednesday morning, O’Jay’s colleague, author and award-winning photographer Mark Stansbury, confirmed that the official cause of death had been ruled “massive heart attack.”

Listeners awaited the return of O’Jay on Tuesday morning, May 3, after announcing that the phone lines were open. Instead, the music continued during the time O’Jay engaged callers in discussions of current events or relevant topics.

Listeners said the morning’s topic focused on the revocation of a college scholarship after a student hoping to graduate posted a photo online of her brandishing guns.

Shockwaves of sadness and disbelief swept social media as news of O’Jay’s death quickly spread.

Stansbury credited O’Jay with insight into facilitating a live gospel music program on Sunday.

“I couldn’t have been bringing good old gospel music to my WDIA listeners for over 30 years without Bobby,” said Stansbury.

“When Bobby first came to WDIA, he pulled my music the first two Sundays. He stopped by the next Sunday and said, “I grew up with you. You know your audience better than I do. Go ahead and do your thing.’”

O’Jay’s desire to be associated with WDIA connects him to a cotton picking experience in Batesville, Mississippi. During a break, his cousin, popular WLOK on-air host Melvin “A-Cookin’ Jones,” came to visit. O’Jay, then 12, decided to work in radio.

“Melvin planted the seed” of his desire to become a “disc jockey,” as radio, on-air personalities were known decades ago.

O’Jay had one of the most well-known radio voices in the MidSouth. He celebrated his 50th anniversary on the radio this year.

He joined historic WDIA, America’s first African American radio station, in 1983 as the new director of programming. O’Jay said during a 2021 interview about his induction into the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame that he envisions “taking the radio station to where it is today.”

Tributes on social media abound.

O’Jay’s latest post on Facebook is a picturesque, peaceful shot of a calm, blue-green lake stretching into the distance under a sunless sky of blue and white clouds. Green trees line a concrete walkway next to the lake. O’Jay writes, “Saturday morning walk at the beautiful Shelby Farms in Memphis.”

After O’Jay posted the photo, Ted Johnson commented, “Bobby it looks so relaxing. Good to go, many more years to come.”

O’Jay replied, “Thank you, my friend.”

This exchange was on Saturday the 30th.

On Tuesday early afternoon, Mamie Wright Johnson broke the news and posted:

“Ted Johnson, he passed this morning.”

More than 100 people commented on the photo.

Patricia Parker wrote: “This picture spoke volumes to me. God is so real. It looks like he went straight to heaven and died doing what he loved.”

According to Stansbury, there is one thing that should comfort everyone.

“Out of every bad thing comes good,” Stansbury said. “Bobby is gone, but we all know that he is with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And for that I say thank you to the Lord.”

Cooley’s Mortuary in Batesville is making the final arrangements.
