Former Democrat Bryan Dean Wright on What Drove Him Away

Former Democrat Bryan Dean Wright on what drove him away

CLAY: We’re now joined by the first guest of the day, Bryan Dean Wright, former CIA operations officer and host of The President’s Daily Brief, a new podcast debuting this week.

Bryan, you used to be a Democrat. I certainly know how that feels – and you get the feeling the party’s gone insane. What was the turning point for you in deciding that the Democratic Party no longer made sense to you?

WRIGHT: You know, over the past few years I’ve seen a few different things. One was a bunch of very anti-American or un-American speeches, I vividly remember Governor Cuomo of New York saying America was never great. Well, that’s not really the right thing for any political party in the country to talk about unless you’re trying to destroy it.

Then I saw a lot of bigotry-based comments from people elected at our national level, from Ilhan Omar and some of the squad members, who were very anti-Semitic in their views. But beyond that, they represented and welcomed things like socialism and communism.

And that kind of stuff, back to the roots of my family’s ties to the Democratic Party, we were Jack Kennedy Democrats who naturally stood up and said no to the radical left – in the party and in the country and in the world.

So I just saw a very, very consistent departure from what I understood to be classic presentation and acceptance of the Democratic Party, especially for workers. We’re now seeing Democrats embrace big tech and big business, some of those woke agendas. And so I and many other conservative Democrats, especially in rural areas, said, ‘All right. We have enough. We become independent or we become Republicans.”

BUCK: Hey Bryan, this is Buck. I wonder how you rate a year after the Biden presidency. One thing that Clay and I talk about quite a bit is that it doesn’t seem like there’s anything to point to that’s a success. Do you think this, since someone voted Democrat earlier, as you said, is this a moment of awakening for many people who may have been on the fence in 2020 and are now seeing through the results how ruinous a Biden presidency is?

Basically, do you think there are a lot of voters who feel sorry for people who were independents or who narrowly broke for Biden?

WRIGHT: You just hit the nail on the head. If you look at the polls for independents – and I’m sure we all know anecdotes and friends and family they all say look President Trump he did a lot of great things maybe some part of his personality just got it not stomach, so I either didn’t vote or I pulled the lever for Joe Biden, but geez, I regret it. My father actually falls into this category.

So there are definitely people in this country who I think are very accessible to smart people, smart politicians who have been the thoughtful politics. I hope these people vote conservatives. But I think we need to get this man Joe Biden and this wing of his party out of the office because they don’t believe in the goodness of America.

What I’m going to tell you now is the left, you don’t see much degradation of the progressives, that wing of the party. They’re still pretty tight about both being Democrats and identifying and supporting Joe Biden and his administration. So I don’t see the drift from the left and far left yet. You can stay at home and not vote.

Just take a look.

But I think they are interested in this thing, that this is a leftist revolution that we’ve really been seeing for 20 years. The woke stuff, the emphasis on racial identity, divisions, tribal politics, especially racial tribal politics, the Democrats bought that hook, line and plumb line. And that’s not hysteria they’re about to give up.

CLAY: We’re talking – thanks for taking the time – we’re talking to Bryan Dean Wright, former CIA operations officer. What do you think when you look at what is happening in Ukraine?

You mentioned that some people question your decision to support Biden over Trump, including your father. How much do you think of what is going on in Ukraine right now is down to Biden’s weakness, particularly in Afghanistan and also around the world in general? We didn’t talk much about it, but Saudi Arabia got their version of SNL poking fun at Joe Biden in a way I can never recall them poking fun at a president before. How much of all this is connected?

Saudi Arabian comedians make fun of Joe Biden. pic.twitter.com/iVnqWDn30C – Clay Travis (@ClayTravis) April 12, 2022

WRIGHT: Yes. So two things. First, when you look at a very glaring fact, which is that the people in the Pentagon and the White House are the same people who designed and executed our 20 year war in Afghanistan and lost. They are all still here and they are now putting together and executing our plan for a war in Europe against the Russians, a nuclear armed state, not a bunch of shepherds or goatherds in Afghanistan.

All right, so this is a big deal. We should probably be talking more about this and thinking about how, hey, we should have our own regime change in this country, both in the Pentagon and in the White House, maybe even in the CIA, some of that intelligence leadership, the ODNI office ?

I think that’s what we need to clean first. The second question is how does the world see us, right? Is that important? On some levels it can be, but ultimately we lead from the front, not from behind. So I think the world is seeing a failure on our part and the West leading up to the war in Ukraine. Everyone knew it was coming or should have come. And then we sat back and just let it happen. If you remember, Joe Biden told President Zelensky that basically he should resign, he should seek asylum in other parts of Europe or even in the United States.

So I think what you’re seeing in Ukraine is really a failure of leadership in Europe, and it’s a failure of the United States, especially Joe Biden. And now we are in a mess. And there’s no good way for anyone to get out of it.

BUCK: I’m speaking to Bryan Dean Wright, former CIA operations officer. I have a new podcast that just launched, The President’s Daily Brief. You should take a look.

Bryan, to that end, you were CIA, I was CIA. This name, this brand, this entity, this institution, along with many others in the intelligence world, has taken an absolute hit in recent years. And people ask me, do you think it’s something that can be reformed, or does it really need to be rebuilt, give all that stuff about Russia’s collusion, the deep state, have the former director sign this letter, stating that Hunter Biden’s laptop was disinformation. What do you think, remodeled or reformed?

WRIGHT: I think it needs to be rebuilt, and I think we’re going to start with the same approach that we took in the 1970’s when the CIA and intelligence agencies were getting out of control, a series of committee investigations to look closely what was going on . And there was actually decent leadership at the time that said yes, we recognize that there is a problem.

Let’s put everything on the table, let’s be honest with the American people, and then we’ll put it back on its feet. So you have to switch in the White House, because the President of the United States, of course, appoints the person who sits in Langley, and then that person has to understand that there’s a problem, and then doggedly try to fix it, and then off course he has to in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, you have to have the overview to recognize that there is a problem and to want to fix it.

So all levers of power must be in unison and have a unified belief that things are bad. The data, or the stories, or both, it’s pretty clear things are really screwed up in the intelligence community. From my perspective, I think a lot of us who have been ex-officers and have watched the politicization of our intelligence community, our brothers and sisters who know damn well, know that they shouldn’t be doing this, but they are doing it.

So I think it can be fixed. The question is, what kind of leadership do we need for this? Won’t happen now. And see if next time a Republican or a Conservative comes into office, if they have the backbone to pull it off.

BUCK: Bryan Dean Wright, everyone. Check out his new podcast, The President’s Daily Brief. i will listen to it Bryan, nice to have you my friend. Come back soon.

WRIGHT: You got it.
