Paula Patton

Overview (3)

Mini Bio (1)

Paula Patton was born in Los Angeles, California to Joyce (Vanraden) and Charles Patton. Her father is African American and her Caucasian mother has German, English and Dutch ancestry. Growing up, her family lived across the street from 20th Century Fox’s property, and she has been a fan of films since her earliest years. Her mother, who also appreciated good films, was a teacher, her father a lawyer. Paula claims that as a girl she would get away by “pretending to be someone else,” so it came as no surprise that she starred in high school plays at Hamilton Magnet Arts High School. Her favorite role was that of “Abigail” in “The Crucible”. She did, however, study film in a summer program at the University of Southern California and won a three-month contract to direct documentaries for PBS. This led to her working as a production assistant on TV documentaries and also on Howie Mandel’s talk show. She actually produced documentary segments for Medical Diaries (2000) which aired on Discovery Health Channel. Paula now admits that she liked what she was doing, but her dream stayed the same as it was when she was little, so she took acting classes and changed gears to become an actress. She found success almost immediately and within three years had played roles in major feature films, Hitch (2005) and Idlewild (2006) and the female lead in Ký Ức Ảo Giác (2006) alongside Denzel Washington.

Making African American films is hard in Hollywood. We need to rely on a support network and create more cohesion between different filmmakers, actors, producers, etc. It’s a very difficult business. There aren’t many African Americans or people of color in high places in Hollywood that we could greenlight films into.

A film is painting, it’s photography, it’s literature – because you have to have the script – it’s music. Give a comedy a different soundtrack and it’s a tragedy. A film combines all these forms and forces you to be attentive with a group of people for two hours.
