With traffic still crawling away from the track beneath him, Ganassi took to the air to head to the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, NASCAR’s traditional Memorial Day event, where Ganassi’s current driver Jamie McMurray will be hosting Ganassi’s future driver Kurt Busch chased win.
It would have been the truest “Memorial Day Doubles,” but McMurray finished second that day. Three months earlier, however, McMurray delivered the first half of Ganassi’s historic year by winning the season-opening Daytona 500.
On that May afternoon in Indianapolis, for the first time in history, a team won both NASCAR’s crown jewel and IndyCar’s greatest race in the same year.
As he likes to say, “Ganassi likes winners”. This is his love of racing and competition.
“That was definitely one to remember,” Ganassi said of the 2010 season. “And we’ve had many other times with wins in both series on the same day. These are great days that you will never forget.

One of Ganassi’s most innovative aspects was his ability to challenge drivers – mix and match talents from both his open wheel background and his love of sports cars. He brought Indy 500 and Formula 1 winner Juan Pablo Montoya and three-time Indy 500 winner and four-time IndyCar Series Champion Dario Franchitti to NASCAR and took his NASCAR drivers to the Rolex 24 at Daytona, where he did the multiple times crown jewel of the IMSA.
This year’s leading NASCAR Cup Series driver, Kyle Larson, also started with the Ganassi team and joins McMurray and Marlin as the only drivers to have multiple wins for Ganassi in a single season.
Marlin’s third place finish in the 2001 NASCAR Cup Series championship is the team’s best championship performance to date, which has recorded those 20 wins, 36 pole positions, 196 top 5s, and 474 top 10s in its two decades of existence. In Larson’s four-win 2017 season, the Californian led 1,352 rounds of the organization’s 8,714 total rounds — 15 percent — in that one season. Ganassi also doubled his overall wins with 20 NASCAR Xfinity Series wins.
“It’s the honesty of the race to win, and that’s what Chip has always been about,” Busch said of the high level of talent that is attracted to driving Ganassi cars. “That’s the best way I can put it. I never felt like we were paid for what we do. We just go out there to win because he sets the tone and demands without even having to say what needs to happen. And we all have the same direction together.
“That’s why it was the best place for me at this point in my career, and I think that’s why McMurray was there for so many years. I think that’s why Montoya was so loyal to Chip. Guys like [David] Stremme and Sterling Marlin and Kyle Larson, all the fraternity that rode for Chip had fun but knew we were there to get that trophy.”

McMurray liked Ganassi so much that he rode for him twice, competing from 2002 to 2005 and then returning to the team in 2010 when he won both the Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400 trophies.
“I think probably the most impressive part about Chip — whether it’s on the IndyCar side or the NASCAR side — is that there are very few owners who succeed where racing is their business,” McMurray said. “I know Chip was always proud that he didn’t own 5,000 dealerships. He didn’t own a truck leasing company. Racing was literally his business. That’s how he earned his living. And he had the longest-serving sponsor, Target, in 25 years. He could have a super successful racing team as his job.
“I find it quite amazing that Chip was able to survive for so long and not only survive but win the biggest races. And I think his big home run was up when he left.”
Ganassi has almost always had the respect of his drivers, and quickly earned the respect of the NASCAR titans—even those who might have initially thought of him as an outsider. If they weren’t sure what to expect from this open-wheel star, they quickly discovered that his process worked on production cars, too.
“I think Chip has a unique flair for racing because he was a driver,” said NASCAR Hall of Fame team owner Rick Hendrick. “He was a driver and an owner and he was successful in everything he did. I enjoyed working with him on the engine program and just being close to him as a Chevrolet team. He’s a good friend and I admire his racer mentality. He strives to win in everything he is in and he is in a crowd right now. Cadillac program, off-road, electric trucks and runs around the world.
“I hate to see Chip leaving NASCAR, but given the racing and ownership success he’s had in IndyCar and NASCAR, he’s one of the best,” continued Hendrick. “He’s building an incredible team and his track record in IndyCar and NASCAR has been phenomenal.”
The great irony is that it was Ganassi’s love for people that helped him succeed with his love of cars and immense competitive spirit.
He gave young riders their first real chance in competitive gear and he gave experienced riders the confidence to expand their resumes in different genres.
“If you look back over the 20 years that he’s been competing in NASCAR, he had the right people,” said Max Jones, who served as NASCAR’s managing director of Chip Ganassi Racing. “He didn’t win a championship, but he was always a top team. He gave opportunities to a lot of people who might not get that opportunity – not just drivers, but crew chiefs and crew members and business people.
“A lot of people judge success by wins and championships, but what he was able to do was keep a company like Target going for all these years, and from a business standpoint I think he’s helped NASCAR. He was a mover and shaker in the sport. He has won all the major races in the world. If you look at his success, you put him right next to Roger [Penske]. I am honored to have had the opportunity to work for him.
“He likes winners. I know that’s a hashtag he has, but if you break it down, it really is him. He doesn’t tolerate complacency or people who don’t want to give their all. And he’s a super loyal guy to everyone who works for him.”
It’s a reflection of Ganassi’s personality and style that even his former drivers still speak of him so fondly and still appreciate the difference Ganassi has made in their career and life.
