Tony Lee Dow (born April 13, 1945) is an American film producer, director, sculptor, and television actor. He is best known for his role in the television sitcom Leave It to Beaver, which ran in prime time from 1957 to 1963. Dow played Wally Cleaver, the older son of June (played by Barbara Billingsley) and Ward (played by Hugh Beaumont) Cleaver, and the older brother of Theodore “Beaver” Cleaver (played by Jerry Mathers).
Early life and career[edit]
Dow was born in Hollywood, California, to John Stevens Dow, Jr. (1908–1987), a designer and general contractor, and Muriel Virginia Dow (née Montrose) (May 27, 1906 – April 30, 2001). a stunt woman in early Westerns and Clara Bow’s Hollywood double. In his youth, Dow trained as a swimmer and was a junior Olympic gold medalist in diving.[4] He won the role of Wally Cleaver in Leave It to Beaver in a casting call with almost no acting experience.
Dow appeared on Leave It to Beaver for six years until the series ended in 1963. He then appeared on other television shows including My Three Sons, Dr. Kildare, The Greatest Show on Earth, Never Too Young and five episodes of Mr. Novak in three different roles. He then served in the National Guard from 1965 to 1968, interrupting his acting career. Returning to acting, he guest-starred on the television series Adam-12, Love American Style, Knight Rider, Square Pegs, The Mod Squad, The Hardy Boys and Emergency![6]
In the 1970s, Dow continued acting while working in the construction industry and studying journalism and filmmaking.[5]
From 1983 to 1989, Dow reprized his role as Wally Cleaver in a reunion made-for-TV movie and in a subsequent series The New Leave It to Beaver.

In 1989, he made his directorial debut with an episode of The New Lassie, followed by episodes of Get a Life, Harry and the Hendersons, Coach, Babylon 5, Crusade, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”. He served as visual effects supervisor for Babylon 5. In 1996, he provided visual effects for the Fox television film Doctor Who.

In the 1990s, Dow announced that he was suffering from clinical depression. He has since starred in self-help videos chronicling this struggle, including 1998’s “Beating the Blues.”[9]
Dow has become a sculptor and creates abstract bronze sculptures. He said of his work: “The characters are abstract and are not meant to represent reality, but rather the truth of the interactions as I see and feel them. I find the forest in the hills of Topanga Canyon and each piece evolves from my subconscious. I am making limited editions of nine lost-wax bronzes from molds of the original burlwood sculpture.”[10] One of his bronze pieces was on display in the backyard garden of Barbara Billingsley, who played his mother in Leave It to Beaver. He was selected as one of three sculptors to exhibit at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts exhibition at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, France in December 2008. He represented the United States delegation made up of artists from the Karen Lynne Gallery. His synopsis, shown at the Louvre, was titled “Unarmed Warrior,” a bronze figure of a woman holding a shield.[11]

Wally is the “All American” boy. He is an intelligent, polite teenager who is trusted by his parents, popular with his peers, and popular with his teachers. He is an athlete with track, basketball and baseball being his three favorite sports; and he excels at all. His friends Clarence “Lumpy” Rutherford and Eddie Haskell have a knack for getting into trouble and taking Wally with them. Unlike his brother Beaver (who thinks girls are “creepy”), Wally is popular with the girls and has many girlfriends throughout the series. In the later seasons, Wally has a few after-school jobs and buys a used car.
The character’s humor draws from Wally’s teenage perspective. He occasionally makes blunt or inappropriate comments that are confusing or embarrassing to adults. He occasionally slips in slang, which angers his mother. He sometimes humorously regards his parents as clueless squares. His dating life is frustrating at times as he tries to deal with the thoughts and emotions of teenage girls. Wally also acts as a foil for Eddie and Lumpy’s shenanigans; but sometimes goes along reluctantly.
Wally serves as a bridge between Ward, June and Beaver. Smarter and more experienced than his brother, he often expresses parental communication in simpler terms for Beaver to understand. At other times he informs the parents about Beaver’s activities, plans and feelings. At the age of five, Wally gave his nickname to a newborn beaver while trying to pronounce his first name, Theodore.
Living at home[edit]
Although there are four bedrooms in the Cleaver house, Wally and Beaver share one bedroom. Her bedroom is a main setting in the show. Wally spends his time in the bedroom at a small desk doing schoolwork, the boys entertain their friends in the bedroom, and the room is often the scene of Ward’s disciplinary lectures. Although Wally Beaver sometimes warns that he will suffer some sort of corporal punishment from Ward (“Dad’s gonna clobber you!”), such punishment never comes.
Wally is rarely seen doing normal household chores. He sometimes clears the dining table for his mother (i.e. carries some dirty plates into the kitchen) and in one episode he is seen drying plates. But the typical teenage chores (mowing the lawn, taking out the trash, cleaning windows) don’t seem to belong to him. After school he plays sports and at home Wally spends most of his time doing schoolwork in his bedroom. However, in one episode, Ward is out of town and Wally is asked to play man of the house. He carves the roast at dinner and monitors Beaver’s behavior.
Many episodes have a very brief “after school” scene in the kitchen between June and Wally. Wally comes home to find his mother preparing dinner; he entertains her with youthful banter about the day’s events at school. Then, as Wally exits the room with a farewell quip and the laughter out of the can begins, the camera catches June’s confused, dazed, or amused expression on her face.
Some episodes deal with Wally’s youthful tastes in hairstyles and clothing. In one episode, he pisses off his mother by wearing his hair in a greasy “tango dancer” style, and in another episode, he annoys both of his parents when he buys a garish suit from a men’s clothing store.

In the first season of Leave It to Beaver, Wally is a thirteen-year-old in his senior year (8th grade) at Grant Avenue Grammar School. In season two, Wally attends Mayfield High School and stays there for the show’s final five seasons, even though he should have graduated. Wally is a good student who, unlike his brother Beaver, rarely gives his parents or teachers cause for concern. He spends school nights at home with his textbooks and scratching essays on his legal pad. In one episode, Wally runs for class president but loses the election. In another episode, Eddie “slaps” Wally in the school corridor when he thinks Wally is walking toward his girl, and in another episode, Wally is caught by the coach throwing towels in the locker room. The series ends with Wally, a high school grad preparing for state college, and Beaver, who is looking forward to going to Mayfield High.

Wally’s age allowed the authors to put him in dating situations with his school friends. Wally’s first girlfriend on the show is Penny Jamison, a New York girl he meets while attending ballroom classes at Miss Spencer’s School of the Dance. Penny has danced with college boys and thinks Wally dances just as smoothly as she does. She wraps Wally around her pinky and even lets him go to the library to get a copy of Rebecca from Sunnybrook Farm for her. The romance ends when Beaver sends Penny a toad in a neatly wrapped box. Wally then becomes romantically involved with Mary Ellen Rogers, although the viewer often hears of her rather than sees her. In a Season 1 episode, Mary nurtures Ellen Beavers’ friendship in order to get to Wally, and then maneuvers Wally into going to a dance against his will. In another episode, Wally takes cha-cha lessons to enter a dance competition with Mary Ellen. Although Mary Ellen was Wally’s primary romantic interest, Wally dated several other girls during his high school years. In one episode, he turns down a vacation trip with his family to stay home near his current flame, then discovers that she has left town with her parents for a vacation trip. In another episode, he falls in love with a tennis-playing “elderly woman” who uses him to make her estranged boyfriend jealous. One high school friend who had five “romantic” gigs was Julie Foster. In one episode Wally grows a mustache thinking Julie will be charmed by his casual looks and then the poor boy gets humiliated when she laughs at it.

As Beaver grew into an awkward young teenager, he sometimes took a backseat to his older brother Wally, a senior in his senior years of high school. Tony Dow had grown into an attractive, athletic young man and was often featured in “heartthrob”-type magazines, aimed primarily at teenage girls. Producers capitalized on Dow’s popularity, writing episodes dealing with Wally’s dating life, his after-school jobs, his friends, and his car. Beaver was pushed into the background.

In June 1963, the series ended with milestones in the lives of Wally and Beaver: high school graduate Wally is preparing for state college and Beaver is looking forward to entering Mayfield High. The final episode was a retrospective called “Family Scrapbook” and has claimed its place in TV history as the first prime-time sitcom episode written specifically as a series finale. In the episode, the Cleavers reminisce about old photos in a scrapbook while flashback clips from previous episodes play. In the course of the last episode, the viewer learns how Beaver got his nickname. The show ends with Beaver and Wally playing with a wind-up toy and laughing like children.

In 1983, CBS aired the reunion telefilm Still the Beaver starring Jerry Mathers. Other members of the original series cast, including Dow, reprized their roles. In 1985, a sequel to the original series entitled Still the Beaver was produced, again starring Jerry Mathers and other original cast members. The series lasted one season on Disney Channel before being picked up by TBS in 1986 and renamed The New Leave It to Beaver. The series aired until 1989.
In Still the Beaver and The New Leave It to Beaver, Wally is married to high school sweetheart Mary Ellen and is an attorney in private practice.
