In 1992, Clay Bradley, BMI’s Head of Writer Relations, recommended Chesney to his friend Troy Tomlinson of Opryland Music Group, saying, “I met this East Tennessee boy today. He’s a good singer, a good songwriter and more than anything I think you’re going to really like him as a person.”[9] Chesney performed five songs during his audition for Tomlinson. Tomlinson’s response was enthusiastic, later telling HitQuarters:
First of all, the songs drew me in because I thought he painted great pictures in his lyrics, especially for someone who wasn’t anywhere near your typical Music Row co-writer. I thought he sang very well too. But most of all, there was that “I’ll-do-that” look in his eyes – I was really taken with the fact that he was so determined to be successful in this business.[9]
Chesney walked out of the audition with a songwriting deal. A year later, an appearance at a songwriter’s showcase led to a deal with Capricorn Records, who had recently started a country division.

This album represented a transition to a gulf and western sound with a series of “airy island songs with steel drums”. Kanye West and 50 Cent’s albums Graduation and Curtis were both released on the same day. Those artists found themselves in the midst of an embattled sales war, with the latter claiming that if West sold more albums than he did, he would end his solo rap career (remarks he later retracted as the terms of the contract conflicted with the promise). ). Chesney began his Poets and Pirates Tour on April 26, 2008 at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina. During the introduction of his set, his boot caught between a hydraulic lift and the edge of the stage surface, crushing his foot and causing a severe ankle hematoma. Most of the damage was concentrated on his toes. It took Chesney about 30 seconds to disengage his foot as he crouched onto the stage as the band continued to play a lengthy introduction to the song. When Chesney finally freed himself, he stood up and put his hand on his knee as he began to sing.
Chesney did not acknowledge the injury early in his performance. However, he limped visibly and appeared to rest near a drum stand while leaning forward and holding his knee during instrumental breaks in his songs. As he walked offstage, a University of South Carolina doctor cut off Chesney’s cowboy boots and immediately began treating the foot injury. X-rays taken afterwards showed multiple fractures in his right foot.
