Lawsuit Miami Pastor Blew Church Money on Extramarital Dalliance With Congregant UPDATED

In May 2019, about a month after David Stocker, Jr. took a woman from his church on a first date, she flew to New York City to take part in all of the basic tourism activities in the Big Apple: visiting Broadway, taking pictures Ride around Times Square in one of these kitschy horse-drawn carriages. The couple returned the following month to stay at a luxury Lower East Side hotel, snapping intimate photos and selfies along the way. Some would consider this romance. But worshipers at Brave Church, the Miami congregation where Stocker pastored, likely disagree. According to a 307-page lawsuit filed May 24 by Peninsular Florida District Council (PenFlorida) — an umbrella organization of the Assemblies of God that oversees more than 300 churches in Florida and the Virgin Islands, including the Brave Church — Stocker violated violated church bylaws by engaging in sexual relations with at least three parishioners and using the church’s credit card to fund at least one of the affairs, and then refused to resign as pastor after PenFlorida investigated and found him of “gross sexual misconduct.” and guilty of immoral acts” discouraged parishioners from reporting Stocker for fear of ruining his career. Evidence that he was sexually involved with at least three different women from the parish while he was not married to them and legally for some time with his current ex-Mrs au was married,” the complaint reads. “Brave Church of Miami, Inc. and its board of directors have resolved the matter amicably with the Florida Peninsula County Council,” attorney Kristin Ahr said in a written statement. Ahr, a partner at Nelson Mullins, the firm representing Brave Church and the board members, cited “significant misunderstandings” between Brave Church and PenFlorida that were resolved through a “very friendly settlement.” She didn’t provide details about the misunderstandings or the settlement, but did confirm that Brave Church remains associated with PenFlorida and the Assemblies of God — albeit not with Stocker. Stocker did not respond to requests for comment via email, phone, Facebook and Instagram. Brave Church offers contemporary worship at its two locations in Westchester and Brickell. His website advertises with the slogan “Leading People to Love People” and his Instagram (@bravemiami) is full of photos and videos with vibrant graphics, smiling young faces and a charismatic stocker who appears on stage in casual streetwear or an all-black suit Sermons In 2014, Stocker and his then-wife Christina joined the church as youth pastors to reach younger generations of churchgoers. In a 2018 interview with VoyageMIA, the couple described their desire to help younger people realize that “church can be a place for everyone.” (The couple divorced in 2020.) “Our heart is in helping those who may be in a struggle, repeating dead ends, or the person who just wants to connect with others in life-giving positive ways,” the Stockers said in the interview, although it’s unclear who said what. “We believe there is room for everyone.” According to the lawsuit, the woman who brought Stocker to New York City reported him to PenFlorida in January of this year and provided the board members with hundreds of text messages, photos and videos detailing their affair has been detailed. She informed them that Stocker slept with at least two other women from the community and had used church funds for his liaisons on at least two occasions, including her flight and hotel room during her time in New York. (In addition to their trips to New York, Stocker and the woman reportedly also traveled to San Francisco and San Diego in 2019.) The woman later discovered that Stocker was also seeing a second woman, and in November 2021, she learned that the pastor was ” “romantically involved” with a third wife — all while he was still with her and still legally married to his then-wife, according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit also alleges that Stocker abused alcohol (the behavior of the Assemblies of God does not condone it) and acted “unexpectedly” on numerous occasions. The complaint includes testimony from a witness who claims to have seen Stocker and a woman “so drunk” that they entered the field at a Celtics Heat game in Miami on November 4, 2021. When Miami police officers intervened, the witness claimed Stocker “got very angry and aggressively yelled at the police.” It’s unclear if either party was arrested or detained. A first case management conference for the parties in the lawsuit is scheduled for Aug. 15 Glen Waldman, a Miami-based attorney representing PenFlorida, says the lawsuit is unlikely to move forward if the “confidential settlement” with Brave Church is performed as expected. Waldman says he’s “delighted” that Brave Church will remain an Assemblies of God institution, an outcome he believes will benefit everyone involved — particularly the church’s parishioners

Meet David and Christina Stocker of Brave Church in Westchester and Doral – Voyage MIA Magazine

Today we would like to introduce you to David and Christina Stocker.

So before we get into specific questions about the company, why not tell us a little bit about yourself and your story?

Six years ago we were pastors in Dallas. We received a call from the former pastor of the Central Bible Assembly of God to help transition the church to the next generation. They offered us the position of youth pastor. It was important to us to help the younger generation to see that church can be a place for everyone. That it was relevant and fun and a place to connect and live life with people like you. We have always believed that church is not boring or irrelevant. Soon we became the young adult pastors and the gymnasium upstairs where we held services was soon packed with youth and young adults every Friday night. The music was cool, the vibe was awesome and people came from all over. We had a girl who told her friends to get ready like they were going to the club, but instead she took them to church. The girl who visited us that night is now our collaborator as our music director. We’ve seen so many young adults come together in such a good way over the years. She is marrying her best friend, whom she met at the young adult prom. We’ve done out-of-the-box events like our own color run, throwing powder in the parking lot, which got a lot of people bringing their friends. Within a year we became the senior pastors and brought this joyful, youthful culture to the entire church. Our heart is to help those who may be struggling, repeating dead ends, or just want to connect with others in life-giving positive ways. We believe there is room for everyone. From our adventurous children’s facilities to our Young At Heart Thanksgiving Dinner (55+). Brave Church loves our community and wants to do whatever it takes to contribute and enrich the lives of others.

We host ongoing community outreaches such as B. Bringing Brave Apparel to our city’s homeless, taking mission teams to medical outreaches in Haiti, building an orphanage for 25 Indian girls, and hosting our annual Love Week. This included an annual pajama project bringing pajamas and books to Miami-Dade Headstart Kids, a clothing drive with the WOW (Special Needs) Center of Miami, and Operation Christmas Child, as well as 5 other local outreach projects. Our motto is to live boldly and make others love others, with faith and love at the core of who we are. Really, there is nothing better to indulge in.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – overall, was it an easy journey and if not, what were the challenges you faced?

We’ve had our share of struggles and trails. When we first became pastors, a large part of the congregation protested about our cultural relevance and about half of the congregation left us. However, the increase in people since that time has quadrupled to three services, with a fourth service now to be opened.

Okay – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Brave Church – what should we know?

We’re known for helping people live boldly, write better stories, thrive in life, forge eutectic connections with one another, find lifelong friendships, and discover their purpose. We have seen hundreds of thousands break free from addictions, find a lifelong partner and get married, begin using their talents to creatively and positively impact our city and world, find true meaning in their lives, and find connections to God. Many people who have broken away from the church in general have not been meaningful, personal, or applicable to their daily lives. We have a mural on the side of our building that says, “You belong here.” and a lot of people participated because they drove past it and it caught their attention. When they discover they really belong, they discover something they’ve never seen before. One of the things we are most proud of is Brave Apparel, our own brand around our lion logo, which we recently launched globally and has made an outstanding mark in our culture. It is tailored clothing from babies to older generations.

Is there a trait or trait that you feel is critical to success?

Faith is certainly central to what we do, but we also believe that our Purple Cow (which sets us apart) is that we are real, authentic and genuinely loving our community and world. We also have an incredible team of staff and volunteers who are creative and committed to helping others live brave lives.
