Drew Doughty

Canadian ice hockey player

hockey player

Drew Doughty (born December 8, 1989) is a Canadian ice hockey defenseman and assistant captain for the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted second overall by the Kings in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by OHL’s Guelph Storm, where he was twice named the league’s top attacking defenseman.

Doughty made his NHL debut as an 18-year-old in 2008 and was named to the all-rookie team. He is a two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Kings in the 2011-12 NHL season and 2013-14 NHL season, a two-time Olympic gold medalist with the Canadian national team in Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014, a 2009 silver medalist at the World Championships, a gold medalist at the 2008 World Junior Championship and Norris Trophy finalist in the 2009–10, 2014–15, 2015–16 and 2017–18 seasons, winning the 2015–16 trophy.

Early life[edit]

Doughty was born in London, Ontario to Paul and Connie Doughty.[2] He was introduced to hockey when he was given a mini racquet for his first birthday, skated when he was two, and played before he was four.[3] Doughty also played football as a goalkeeper growing up – his father had a history with the game and his sister Chelsea is named after the England team of the same name. He was considered for a provincial under-14 team but gave up the sport at 16 to concentrate on ice hockey. Nonetheless, Doughty felt that his time as a goalscorer in soccer helped him develop an awareness of the players and the game in hockey.

Player career[ edit ]

Major Junior[ edit ]

Doughty was selected fifth overall by the Guelph Storm in the 2005 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Priority Selection Draft.[4] He scored five goals and 33 points for forward in 2005-06 and was named to the OHL All-Rookie Team on defense. Doughty played in the 2007 OHL All-Star Game and was voted the top attacking defenseman in the league by the coaches after a 74-point season in 2006-07. He won both awards again in 2007–08 with a 50-point season and was awarded the Max Kaminsky Trophy for Outstanding Defenseman of the OHL. National Hockey League (NHL) Central Scouting ranked Doughty as the third-best North American candidate for the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.[8] He was picked second overall by the Los Angeles Kings, a choice that excited Doughty as he grew up as a Kings fan and wanted to play in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Kings (2008-present) [ edit ]

Early success in Los Angeles (2008–2011) [ edit ]

Doughty made the opening-day lineup for the Kings at the start of the 2008-09 NHL season, one of eight 18-year-olds to do so league-wide.[10] Doughty, who didn’t anticipate playing so quickly in the NHL, overpowered Doughty as he earned a spot on the Kings roster.[10] He made his NHL debut on October 11, 2008 against the San Jose Sharks and scored his first goal on October 20 against the Colorado Avalanche.[6] The Kings had an opportunity to return him to junior ranks without using up a year of his rookie contract if they did so before he played his tenth NHL game. However, they opted to keep him on the roster for the season. His defensive partner Sean O’Donnell agreed with the decision and praised Doughty’s maturity. He played 81 games in his rookie season, finishing with six goals and 21 assists and earning a spot on the NHL All-Rookie Team[5] while also playing in the Youngstars Game as part of the 2009 All-Star Celebration.[ 12] ]

Doughty improved to 59 points in his sophomore season in 2009–10 and finished third in the league by scoring under defenders. He was named to the second team All-Star and was named a Norris Trophy finalist as the league’s top defenseman. His trainer, Terry Murray, praised Doughty for his improvement throughout the season. Doughty helped lead the Kings to the playoffs for the first time since 2002, despite losing their first-round series to the Vancouver Canucks. He played all six games of the series, although he suffered a wrist injury in the first game that forced him to turn down an invitation to play for Canada at the 2010 Men’s World Men’s Ice Hockey Championships.

The Kings media voted Doughty as the team’s outstanding defenseman for the third straight year in 2010-11. His offensive performance fell to 40 from 59 points the previous season, but he scored his 100th career point on December 21, 2010 against the Colorado Avalanche. Doughty and the Kings were a restricted free agent after the season and struggled to agree on a new contract. The Kings offered $6.8 million per season for seven years, but Doughty turned down the offer. Although the Kings publicly stated they were unwilling to sign him for an annual salary higher than team leader Anže Kopitar’s $6.8 million, the two sides eventually agreed to an eight-year, $56 million contract that will Doughty the highest-paid player on the team, averaging $7 million per season.[21] Doughty missed most of Los Angeles training camp as a hot-flyer, including five preseason games, before signing the September 29, 2011 contract.

Stanley Cup titles (2012–2014) [ edit ]

In addition to missing training camp, Doughty suffered a concussion early in the season that put him on injured reserve. He struggled after returning from injury and was criticized for allowing his physical condition to decline. Doughty himself admitted he wasn’t enjoying the game early in the season. He said his season took a turn when the team replaced Murray with Darryl Sutter, a coach who preached the need to prepare. Doughty was promoted to a role where he was expected to take down the opposition’s top forwards, forcing him to focus more on his defensive play than his offense. Consequently, Doughty’s 36 points on the season was his lowest total in three years. However, he was the leading defensive tackle in the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs, with 16 points in 20 games helping the Kings win the first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history.[24] Doughty was hailed as the top player for both teams in the final series, a six-game win over the New Jersey Devils.

Doughty won his second Stanley Cup in 2014 against the New York Rangers, becoming the seventh player to win both an Olympic hockey gold medal and the Stanley Cup in the same year.

Winning the Norris Trophy and continued success (since 2015) [ edit ]

During the 2015–16 season, Doughty had a career-high plus-24 while also leading the league in shot attempts and ranked third in average ice time for the Kings. At the end of the year, Doughty won the 2015-16 Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman. It was his third nomination; He came second in voting in 2014–15 and third in 2009–10.

During the 2016–17 season, Doughty was selected to participate in the 2017 NHL All-Star Game (along with teammate Jeff Carter) after leading the team’s defense in goals and finishing second in points. The following season, Doughty was again selected to enter the All-Star Game, marking his fourth straight selection. Doughty was also again named a finalist for the Norris Trophy. During the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Doughty was suspended for one game for an illegal punch to the head in Game 1 against the Vegas Golden Knights.

On July 1, 2018, Doughty agreed to an 8-year, $88 million contract extension with the Kings, which will sign him through the 2026-27 season.

On October 8, 2019, Doughty scored the winning goal in a game against the Calgary Flames, but it was his post-goal celebration that drew media attention. Doughty reportedly yelled “Suck my dick!” to Flames’ fans at Ice Height while performing a “crotch chop” move that became famous in professional wrestling circles.

On October 22, 2021, after starting the 2021–22 season 7 points ahead of all NHL defensemen in the standings, Doughty collided with Dallas Stars defenseman Jani Hakanpää knee-to-knee and suffered a contusion of the tibial plateau. As a result, he missed 16 games and returned to action on November 30, 2021. On January 27, 2022, Drew Doughty played his 1,000th. NHL game in a match against the New York Islanders. He would be injured again on March 7, 2022 and would require season-ending wrist surgery. In 39 games played, Doughty recorded 7 goals and 31 points.

International game[edit]

In 2006, Doughty played with Team Ontario at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge, finishing fifth and then winning a gold medal with the national U-18 team at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. He competed at the 2007 IIHF World Under-18 Championships and scored five points in six games for the fourth-place Canadians in the cut.[40] Doughty was named to compete in the 2007 Super Series, an eight-game tournament against the Russian Juniors commemorated to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the 1972 Summit Series.

He played in all eight games and recorded two assists as Canada went unbeaten with seven wins and a draw. He then earned a spot on the roster for the 2008 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. [43] Doughty was named a Tournament All-Star and received the Directorate Award for Best Defender after helping lead the Canadians to their fourth To lead a consecutive gold medal at the tournament.

After his rookie season in the NHL, Doughty made his senior debut and played at the 2009 Men’s World Men’s Hockey Championships.[46] He scored one goal and added six assists in nine games,[5] however, the Canadians opted for silver after losing the league game to Russia 2–1. [47] His strong play at the World Championships earned Doughty an invitation to Canada’s Summer Orienteering Camp for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Doughty earned one of the last spots in Canada’s defense by beating established players like Dion Phaneuf, Jay Bouwmeester and Mike Green. Doughty became the youngest player to represent Canada in a major best-on-best tournament since Eric Lindros competed in the 1991 Canada Cup at the age of 18. He developed into one of the team’s best defensemen[50] and won the gold medal when Canada defeated the United States in the last game.[51] He was on the ice when Sidney Crosby scored the goal to win the tournament in overtime.[52] Doughty was a star at the 2014 Winter Olympics,[53] where Canada retained its gold medal title. He led the team with four goals and played a prominent role in a defensive core that conceded just three goals in six games en route to defeat, one of the best team performances in Olympic history.[54]

Personal life[edit]

Doughty’s maternal grandparents immigrated to Canada from Portugal in the 1950s, and his paternal grandparents immigrated to Canada from England in the 1970s.

Doughty married his high school sweetheart Nicole Arruda on August 8, 2018 in Muskoka, Ontario.

The couple wanted a Muskoka casual wedding. Okay, for all non-Canadians, Muskoka isn’t an elaborate ritual or celebration. It is a scenic area of southern Ontario that is home to Muskoka Lakes, Brydon’s Bay and islands.

Sherwood Inn, a premier destination for weddings in Muskoka, received the wedding destination choice. Interesting news about Drew Doughty

What has Drew Doughty been up to lately?

Drew Doughty Tooth

One area of speculation for anyone who’s seen Drew is how on earth he ended up losing his teeth. The question can be answered quickly by watching a rough NHL game. Drew had a tooth knocked out by a fast flying puck. The second tooth was lost after a nasty high stick where the other player carried his stick over the allowed height which is below the opponent’s shoulder.

Drew developed a lisp from his missing front teeth, but he’s not keen on wearing cosmetic teeth as they make the lisp worse.

More and more of his teeth are in the line of fire as he refuses to wear a mouth guard to this day. Unlike other “civilian” sports, lost teeth in hockey are a badge of honor, and Drew joins a long list of other greats including Gordie Howe, Bobby Clarke, Brent Burns, Austin Watson, Chris Neil, Rocco Grimaldi, and more. Due to the frequent encounters with the tooth ferry within the sport, fans have jokingly asked, “Are there any NHL players with all their teeth left?”

Drew Doughty contract

Drew takes home an incredibly large pot of gold. According to SportRac, he signed an eight-year, $88 million contract with the Los Angeles Kings. It came with a $20 million sign-up bonus.

Drew Doughty Salary

Under the terms of his contract with the Kings, Drew Doughty takes home an average salary of $11 million a year.

Drew Doughty House

The beautiful couple share various properties, including a house Drew bought in 2009 after signing his first NFL contract. It is on the outskirts of London Ontario, his hometown. He bought another home in Hermosa Beach in 2016 at a cost of $6 million.

Drew Doughty Assault

The annoyingly talkative and optimistic Drew Doughty was the subject of an investigation in 2012 after a woman claimed he had sexually assaulted her. The two had met near the Hermosa Beach Pier, and the woman said she turned down a proposal from Doughty in front of his teammates. When they took a cab home, Drew had shagged her, she told police. As part of the enforcement notice, she also admitted to consensually shagging the player a few months earlier. LA detectives declined to press formal charges because they found credibility issues in her story.

Drew Doughty Workout

Drew is not a gym bunny and doesn’t like working out. But when the coach is watching, it’s full steam ahead. In the summer he prefers to be mentally and physically away from hockey and enjoys a nice game of pool from his dining room.

Drew Doughty Olympics

Drew had one of his best games at the 2018 Winter Olympics, but not without clumsiness along the way. He’d apparently overslept for the gold medal game, showing up just before the warm-up skate and sweating from having to push through crowds and walk a few blocks to get his suit.
