Biography[edit]
Young was born in Laurel in Jones County in southeastern Mississippi.[5] His family was poor and he had no school shoes until he was in third grade.[6]
He studied engineering at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. In the middle of his freshman year, he answered the call of the ministry and enrolled at Mississippi College in Clinton to further his education. He then went to Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina. He was a pastor in North Carolina. In South Carolina he pastored Taylors First Baptist Church (1968-1971) and FBC Columbia (1972-1978) before moving to Second Baptist Houston.[5] Under his leadership, the church has grown from an average of 500 weekend attendees in 1978 [7] to over 32,000 today [citation needed] and a membership of over 83,000.[8] dr Young’s ministry has been characterized by growth, innovation and creativity. He was a pioneer of the multisite church, and in 1999 Second Baptist became a two-site church.[8] Currently, the Second Baptist Church occupies six locations in the greater Houston area and, since January 2017, has established an online virtual campus where each week’s sermon is broadcast live around the world on a daily basis.

Young was elected President of the Southern Baptist Convention in June 1992 and again in June 1993.[5] He has a broadcasting service, The Winning Walk, which provides content throughout North America and other parts of the world.[5] A dynamic and gifted communicator [neutrality is disputed], Dr. Young is a sought-after speaker on church growth, leadership principles, and moral issues facing modern culture. [citation needed] He is the author of several books including Healing Broken America, Healing Broken America, Standing by the Promises, Total Heart Health for Men, Total Heart Health for Women, The 10 Commandments of Parenthood, and The 10 Commandments of Marriage.[9]
Young was instrumental in creating and organizing Houston’s relief efforts in the wake of Tropical Storm Allison and Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Ike, and Harvey, and the COVID-19 pandemic.[10]
He was instrumental in the development and launch of Loving Kids, a joint venture ministry aimed at making a difference in Houston’s Acres Homes subdivision.[11] The focus is on elementary-age students and their schools with the goal of increasing literacy rates, improving school grades, reducing crime rates, and engaging families in the community’s churches.[11]

Young has suffered from heart problems and methods to reduce their risk are the subject of his 2005 book, Total Heart Health for Men Workbook. In 1988 he had angioplasty to open a blocked heart artery and in May 2010 he underwent triple coronary bypass surgery.[12] The operation was apparently successful.[13]
