‘Stuntman’ Eddie Braun on attempting Evel Knievel dare — and the touching reason Charlie Sheen once wrote him a $1 million check

When it comes to defying death in Hollywood, Eddie Braun is at the forefront.

After meeting legendary daredevil Evil Knievel as a child, Braun was inspired to become a professional stuntman at age 17. Since then he has had a prolific Hollywood career spanning four decades and more than 250 films and television series, and has acted as stunt double for actors such as Robert De Niro, Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Ashton Kutcher.

In 2016, Braun paid the ultimate tribute to his idol by attempting to complete the stunt Knievel infamously never managed – his 1974 attempt to fly a rocket-powered vehicle over Idaho’s Snake River Canyon. Braun’s efforts are documented in the Dwayne Johnson-produced film Stuntman, which premiered last week on Disney+.

“In the ’70s everyone wanted to be Evel Knievel,” Braun told us in a recent video interview (see above). “I mean, the man was wearing a cloak. He was like a superhero rock star from Mars incarnate. Evel Knievel was everything.”

When it comes to his long (long) list of Hollywood stunts and the Snake River attempt, Braun is quick to dispel the myth that stuntmen are fearless or have a higher fear threshold than the rest of us.

“I get very anxious, I’m scared of a lot of things,” admits Braun. “I’m not this big adrenaline junkie who’s fearless. And there’s nothing wrong with being afraid. Damn, I’m scared all the time. It is how you deal with your fear that defines you as a person.”

As for the actor Braun has had his best experience with since entering show business in the early ’80s, that’s easy. It’s Charlie Sheen, whom Braun has doubled for 30 years and who he considers one of his closest friends.

However, Sheen would have preferred Braun to have retired long ago.

Braun shared a story about their work together on the 1990 thriller The Rookie, which co-starred Sheen with Clint Eastwood, who also directed.

“After five months of being beaten up, blown up and experiencing all sorts of things in this film, on the very last day of shooting, believe it or not, I had a minor mishap on a motorcycle and I broke my leg due to a complicated one breakage ‘” Brown recalls. “Which means the bones were sticking out.”

The story goes on

Sheen visited Braun in the hospital and the actor was very disturbed by what he saw.

“Charlie walked in so upset. I had to calm him down. And then he got frustrated and wrote a check for a million dollars and put it on my hospital bed and said, ‘I want you to stop doing stunts. If it’s necessary, I want you to stop it.” He wrote me a check for a million dollars. And that was a lot of money back then.

“Of course I didn’t cash the check, I put it away somewhere. You never know when you might need it.”

Although Stuntman shows how much more difficult his craft has become with age, Braun still performs stunts today.

“You never want to be the last one at the party. You always want to leave while the party is still going well. They want to leave the stage on the left,” says Braun, who plans to slowly move into producing. “As a stunt performer, you have to know when and when it’s enough.”

Stuntman is now streaming on Disney+.

A Dark Conversation with Stuntman Eddie Braun, Who Is Jumping Across Snake River Canyon on a Rocket

The statement I make is just as important as the actions people see from the outside. In other words, if it were tragic, yes, okay, that’s sad, but how tragic is it that I pursued something noble? How tragic is it that as a stuntman I did the greatest stunt anyone can dream of? As tragic as it is, there’s still something noble about the fact that you didn’t die because you ran away from something you were afraid of. Look, I can’t help but think about Todd Beamer all the time. Do you know who this guy is?

Not out of my head.

He led the charge in taking over Flight 93 from the terrorists. They flew it into the ground. As tragic as what happened to him, what survived that physical act, what survived it, is the impact it left behind. In the face of fear, in the face of impossible results, he faced the situation. He said, “Let’s roll.” And he went in and led the charge. The statement of what he was doing outlasted the physical. And it was very tragic. How proud are his children and family of this statement? Her father was a hero in her eyes. I mean, he faced insurmountable odds, he did it noble. Right? And he left a legacy: Wow, there’s a real American doing something almost impossible. Faced with the fears, he faced the situation. That’s effective. And he didn’t do it for money. He didn’t do it for fame.

But the big difference is that he didn’t put himself in that situation.

Yes, of couse. It just presented itself. Okay, how much more testimony am I going to make to my kids if I volunteer for these impossible opportunities?

But wait a minute, are you equating your situation with his? Because it was a selfless act.

No no. Are you kidding me? no His was much nobler. His was much nobler. I would never compare that to that. No way. What I do is stupid, it’s shallow stuff. And it’s just as important to me how it’s done as what’s done.

I have to ask: is it worth the price of sending this message to your children when you may not be there for them?

[pause] Yes. When I think of the big picture, yes. Worth it. Because that will stick with them. I don’t think that will be the case. I don’t think there will be a tragic ending. But again, since you are not a stupid man, you must consider every possibility. I asked and Gary made his solemn promise that if things go bad and I’m just a puddle on the other side of the ravine, I’ve asked him for two things. I said, “Please cover the rocket or me. Just cover them up. Because I don’t want people to see the blood, but I want them to see the picture.” The other thing I asked him to do is ask him to take my watch off me if there’s any left. I want my son to get my watch. I’ve worn this watch on countless stunts. It’s also a simple watch. It’s a Rolex, but it’s a simple, really simple one. But it means a lot to me. I have worn it on several stunts and I want my son to have it.

Leaving home might be the last time I see my children. I make a routine when I go to work. “Okay, I love you. We’ll see each other soon. Blah blah blah.” Right? However, there is one thing that I have shared with my son. I looked at my son, he’s 17 years old so he’s at that awkward age. He’s a man, but a boy. And I looked at him and said, “Deck, you gotta promise me one thing.” He says, “What, Dad, what?” I said, ‘You must promise me that if I don’t come back, you will walk each of your sisters down the aisle when it is time for them to get married. you have to represent me Promise me that.” He says, “Aw, Dad, come on.” I said, “No, seriously, Deck. Give me two seconds to hear something serious. You promise me that if I don’t come back, you will lead each of your sisters to the altar.” And he looked at me and said, “Yes, Dad, I will. Of course I will.” I said, “OK, cool. But I’ll be back.”
