Ned Arnel Mencia (born October 22, 1967), known professionally as Carlos Mencia (and previously Ned Holness)[1] is a Honduran-born American comedian, author, and actor. His comedy style is often political and involves themes of race, culture, criminal justice and social class. He is best known as the host of the Comedy Central show Mind of Mencia, which produced four seasons before it was canceled in 2008. Around this time, several other comedians accused Mencia of plagiarizing and stealing jokes in his stand-up routines.[2]
Early life
Mencía was born in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, the seventeenth of eighteen children. His mother, Magdelena Mencía, was Mexican and his father, Roberto Holness, was Honduran.[3] At the time of his birth, Mencía’s mother was involved in a domestic dispute with his father and refused to give her son his biological father’s surname. The name on his birth certificate is “Ned Arnel Mencía”, although Mencia has said that out of respect for his biological father he still went by the name Holness and was known as “Ned Holness” until he was eighteen. [1]
Mencia was raised Roman Catholic by his aunt Consuelo and uncle Pablo Mencia in East Los Angeles, California. By his own admission, staying out of trouble growing up was difficult, but with the help of his family, he excelled at school and stayed out of gangs. He attended Garfield High School in Los Angeles County. Mencia was a drug dealer when he was 19 and broke into a house.[3] He studied electrical engineering at California State University in Los Angeles, but left early to pursue a career in comedy after a successful performance at an open mic night at The Laugh Factory. He has an older brother named Joseph Mencia, who often appeared in Mind of Mencia.

In 1988, Mitzi Shore, owner of The Comedy Store, suggested that Mencia change his first name from “Ned” to “Carlos” to appeal to Mexican audiences.[7] Mencia has performed at prestigious LA venues such as The Comedy Store and The L.A. Cabaret. His success at these venues led to appearances on The Arsenio Hall Show and Buscando Estrellas, where he earned the title of International Comedy Grand Champion. Then, in 1994, Mencia was chosen to host HBO’s Latino comedy show Loco Slam.
Mencia followed Loco Slam and hosted Funny is Funny! at Galavision in 1998. He would continue to do stand-up, including a successful tour in 2001 with Freddy Soto and Pablo Francisco, The Three Amigos. Mencia also did two half-hour specials on HBO, the second of which earned him a CableACE Award for Best Stand-Up Comedy Special. Mencia broke through in 2002 with Comedy Central Presents after the release of his first comedy album, Take A Joke America, on Warner Records.
As his career took off in the early 2000s, Mencia also worked as an actor with guest appearances on the television shows Moesha and The Shield and starred in the film Outta Time and the animated series The Proud Family.
In 2002 he appeared on Comedy Central Presents. In March 2005, Comedy Central announced Mencia’s own half-hour comedy show, Mind of Mencia. The show mixed Mencia’s stand-up comedy with sketch comedy, similar to Dave Chappelle’s show of Chappelle. The show achieved moderate success in its first season and was brought back for a second season in spring 2006, making it Comedy Central’s second highest-rated program behind South Park. It was brought back for a third season this summer before being canceled in 2008. Mind of Mencia was produced by Nedlos, a portmanteau of Mencia’s birth name and the name he took prior to naturalizing in the United States.
Mencia was an occasional guest on the Opie and Anthony radio show on XM Satellite Radio and CBS Radio. He took part in the first Opie and Anthony’s Traveling Virus Comedy Tour in 2006.

In 2005, comedian Joe Rogan wrote a post on his website publicly accusing Mencia of being a plagiarist and alleging that Mencia stole jokes from a number of comedians. On February 10, 2007, Rogan confronted Mencia on the stage at the Comedy Store on Sunset Boulevard, accusing him of plagiarism. Rogan released video of the altercation along with audio and video clips from other comedians including George Lopez, Bob Levy, Bobby Lee and Ari Shaffir, among others.[19] Rogan has also posted audio and video clips of Mencia’s interviews and joke routines on his blog, in which he compares Mencia’s routines to those of other comedians.
Comedian George Lopez also accused Mencia of plagiarizing his material. In an interview on The Howard Stern Show, Lopez accused Mencia of plagiarizing 13 minutes of his material on Mencia’s HBO special. He also claimed he had a physical altercation with Mencia over the alleged plagiarism.[21] The only joke Lopez publicly stated was stolen and used on Mencia’s HBO special was a Taco Bell joke. Comedian Ted Sarnowski contradicted this claim, stating that the joke he performed on the radio in 1988 was later recorded by Lopez, the radio station’s resident comic, and used without permission. Sarnowski claims to have given Mencia permission to use the joke.[22][23][24]
Mencia was also accused of stealing a routine from Bill Cosby. In his special No Strings Attached, Mencia plays a bit about a father who spends years coaching his son for a career as a football player, only to see the son say, “I love you mom!” in his moment of television victory. Cosby played a similar part in his concert film Bill Cosby: Himself and wrote briefly on the subject in his book Fatherhood. Mencia told the Los Angeles Times that he never saw the film but regretted the similarities between his jokes and Cosby’s.
Mencia addressed the issue of plagiarism in two hour-long interviews with comedian Marc Maron on his podcast WTF with Marc Maron in May 2010. In a 2011 interview, Mencia stated that he had been in therapy for allegations of plagiarism.[2]

Biography[edit]
Escamilla was born on April 29, 1981 in Cuautla, Morelos. He also has an older sister. In the summer of 1997, after his parents divorced, Escamilla moved to Monterrey, Nuevo Leon with his mother. He studied music at the Escuela de Musica y Danza Superior de Monterrey.
Escamilla also studied criminology for 3 years, but he decided to end his career.
Before becoming a comedian, Escamilla worked as a cook at a burger joint, as a waiter, and was part of a Kentucky Fried Chicken team.
Career [edit]
He is best known for his comedy shows; He has performed throughout the Mexican Republic and Latin America, even embarking on his own “World Tour” of his “Por la Anécdota” tour after confirming presentations in the United States of America and Europe, including trips to Japan. and Australia. This tour resulted in sold out nights in Los Angeles, London, Paris, Barcelona, Tokyo and more.
His fame has made him the first comedian to have performed at the National Auditorium and other major venues in Mexico such as the Arena Ciudad de México. In February 2020, he also became the first Latin American comedian to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York with Gabriel Iglesias to give a small talk in English at the Staples Center, making him one of the greatest exponents of stand-up comedy in Mexico and Latin America catapulted.
He has three specials: “Comedians of the World”, “For the Anecdote” and “Welcome to the World” within the Netflix streaming platform.
He made his debut as a musician in 2016 at Trovafest, in 2017 he performed with the Argentinean band Los Caligaris at the music festival “Pa’l Norte”. In collaboration with Edgar Oceransky he recorded his own music album.
He had his own TV show on the Estrella TV channel called The Franco Escamilla Show and has also taken part in episodes of Comedy Central.
He has a show called “La Mesa Reñoña” with more than 200 issues created by his colleagues from “La Diablo Squad” that airs live every Monday at 9:30 p.m. (Monterrey local time) via YouTube. It has special editions with stars from different fields, including Gabriel Iglesias and John Milton.

Her comedy tackles social taboos and controversial issues, including racism, sexism, homophobia, politics and religion, and sometimes gets her comic book character to support them in a satirical or dry way. She has won two Primetime Emmy Awards for her work in television.
Silverman was a writer and performer on Saturday Night Live, and she starred in and produced The Sarah Silverman Program, which ran on Comedy Central from 2007 to 2010, for which she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series was .[4] She published an autobiography, The Bedwetter, in 2010. Silverman was born on December 1, 1970 in Bedford, New Hampshire to Beth Ann (née Halpin, later O’Hara; 1941–2015) and Donald Silverman. She grew up in Manchester, New Hampshire. Beth was George McGovern’s personal campaign photographer and founded the theater company New Thalian Players, while Donald trained as a social worker and also ran the clothing store Crazy Sophie’s Outlet. Silverman’s parents divorced and later married others.[12][13] Silverman is the youngest of five siblings. Her sisters are reform rabbi Susan Silverman, writer Jodyne Speyer, and actress Laura Silverman; her brother Jeffrey Michael died when he was three months old.[14] She was born into a Jewish family[15] and considers herself secular rather than religious.[16][17][18] She was present when women first lit menorahs at the Western Wall in December 2014.[19] Their ancestors came from Poland and Russia.[20]
Silverman first performed stand-up comedy at the age of 17 was in Boston. She described her performance as “terrible”. After graduating from Derryfield School in Manchester in 1989, she attended New York University for a year but did not graduate. After beginning her stand-up career in 1992, Silverman spent 18 weeks on Saturday Night Live (SNL)’s 1993–94 season as a writer and lead actress. She was released after one season. Only one of the sketches she wrote survived the dress rehearsal and none were aired, although she appeared on the show as a cast member in sketches, usually in minor supporting roles. Bob Odenkirk, a former SNL writer, explained, “I could see that it wasn’t going to work on SNL because she has her own voice, she’s very Sarah Silverman all the time. She can play a role, but she doesn’t disappear into the character – she makes the character her.”[22] She has stated that she wasn’t ready for SNL when she got the job.[26] She said when she was fired it hurt her confidence for a year, but after that she couldn’t hurt anymore, and she describes her time at SNL as a key reason she’s been so tough in her career.[26] She was later grateful her SNL stint was short because she ended up not defining it.[27] She parodied the situation when she appeared on The Larry Sanders Show episode “The New Writer” (1996), playing Sanders’ new staff writer, whose jokes are not used because of the chauvinism and bias of the male comedy chief, who prefers the jokes his male co-authors. She appeared in three episodes of Larry Sanders in the last two seasons.
She also starred in the HBO sketch comedy series Mr. Show (1995-1997) and had the lead role in the 1997 independent film Who’s the Caboose? about two New York comedians (Silverman and director Sam Seder) who go to Los Angeles during the pilot season to try to land a part in a television series; The film features numerous young comedians in supporting roles, but never received a wide theatrical release. Silverman and Seder later directed a six-episode sequel to the television series entitled Pilot Season, in which Silverman plays the same character and Seder once again directed. On July 3, 1997, she made her standup comedy debut on The Late Show with David Letterman.
Silverman has had several guest appearances on television programs, including Star Trek: Voyager in the two-part time travel episode Future’s End (1996); Seinfeld in the episode “The Money” (1997); VIP in the episode “481⁄2 Hours” (2002); Greg the Bunny as a series regular (2002); and in the puppet television comedy Crank Yankers as the voice of Hadassah Guberman (2002-present). She has had small roles in the films There’s Something About Mary, Say It Isn’t So, School of Rock, The Way of the Gun, Overnight Delivery, Screwed, Heartbreakers, Evolution, School for Scoundrels, Funny People and Rent and played a mix of comic and serious roles.
In 2005, Silverman released a concert film, Sarah Silverman: Jesus Is Magic, based on her one-woman show of the same name. Liam Lynch directed the film, which was distributed by Roadside Attractions. It received 64% positive ratings based on 84 reviews on film critic aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes[30] and grossed approximately $1.3 million at the box office.[31] As part of the film’s promotional campaign, she appeared online in Slate as the cover story of Heeb Magazine and in Roast on Comedy Central by Pamela Anderson and Hugh Hefner.
Silverman played a therapist in a skit for a bonus DVD for the Queens of the Stone Age album Lullabies to Paralyze. Silverman also appears at the end of the video for “Death To All But Metal” by American glam metal band Steel Panther. On Jimmy Kimmel Live! parodied Silverman sketches from Chappelle’s show and repeated Dave Chappelle’s characterizations of Rick James and “Tyrone” as well as a character created by Donnell Rawlings based on the Roots miniseries. In 2006, Silverman was ranked 50th on the Maxim Hot 100 List.[32] In 2007, she placed 29th and appeared on the cover.[33]

Her TV sitcom The Sarah Silverman Program debuted on Comedy Central in February 2007; The series has had 1.81 million viewers[4][34] and portrayed the daily adventures of fictionalized versions of Silverman, her sister Laura, and their friends. A number of comedic actors from Mr. Show have appeared on the Sarah Silverman program. Silverman was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award[35] for her role on the show. After Britney Spears’ comeback, Silverman mocked her onstage, saying, ” Yo she’s amazing man I mean she’s 25 years old and she’s already achieved everything she’s going to achieve in life.”[ 38]
In January 2008, she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Showing Jimmy Kimmel, her boyfriend at the time, a special video. The video turned out to be a song called “I’m Fucking Matt Damon,” in which she and Matt Damon sang a duet about having an affair behind Kimmel’s back. Silverman made a guest appearance as Marci Maven in an episode of the second season of the US cable program Monk. She returned in the sixth season premiere and for the 100th episode. According to the audio commentary on the Clerks II DVD, director Kevin Smith offered her the role, which eventually went to Rosario Dawson, but she turned it down for fear of being typecast in “girlfriend” roles. Silverman played Geraldine alongside Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen in Take This Waltz, written and directed by Sarah Polley. The film was well received when it premiered in Toronto in 2011[43] and was selected for US distribution by Magnolia in the summer of 2012.[44] At the Toronto International Film Festival, she told the press that she gained weight on purpose for the role, which required a nude scene, and stressed that Polley wanted “real bodies and real women.”[45] In interviews, she warned fans not to expect too much.[46] However, she later told podcaster and author Julie Klausner that she hadn’t really gained weight for the role and that the remarks were meant as self-deprecating humor.[47]

A small controversy arose over Silverman’s appearance in the 2005 documentary The Aristocrats. The film includes her retelling of the aristocrat joke – an example of transgressive art narrated by numerous comedians since the vaudeville era – as if it were an autobiographical account of her life as a child sex performer. As part of the punchline, she dryly admits that longtime New York radio and television personality Joe Franklin raped her.[2] After the film’s release, Franklin insulted Silverman with his name in the routine and considered suing her. a month later he claimed that the “best” thing he could do was “get Sarah better writers so she could have funnier material.”[58]

In 2019, Silverman received death wishes from two Baptist pastors over her 2005 routine “Jesus is Magic,” in which she made a joke about killing Jesus: “I’m glad the Jews killed Jesus. I would do it again!” In response, Silverman condemned the pastors and “the manipulation of what may be true.”[66]

Silverman became a vegetarian at the age of 10.[67] She is open about her lifelong battle with clinical depression, which eventually led to her becoming addicted to Xanax. She credited her later emotional health to taking the prescription drug Zoloft.[23][16][68] She had struggled with bedwetting from a young age well into her teens, and stated in a 2007 interview that she had recently wet the bed.[69]
Silverman’s autobiography entitled The Bedwetter, published in April 2010, deals with the issue of bedwetting as well as other personal stories from her life. She stated that she did not want to get married until same-sex couples were able to.[70] In 2014, she tweeted, “Just reading I want to get married which is hilarious because I will never get married,” adding, “Why would I want the government to get involved in my love life? Eh. It’s barbaric.”[71]
She explained that she doesn’t want to have biological children because “there are only millions of children in the world who don’t have parents” and to avoid the risk that they might inherit their depression.[72] In 2017, Silverman also said that she prioritized her constantly touring artistic career over motherhood.[73]
Silverman’s real-life sister, Laura, played her sister on the Sarah Silverman program. In 2015, Silverman signed an open letter for which the ONE campaign had collected signatures. The letter was addressed to Angela Merkel and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, urging them to focus on women as they would serve as leaders of the G7 in Germany and the African Union in Ethiopia, respectively, who would begin setting priorities in financing for development to be set ahead of a major UN summit in September 2015 that would set new development goals for a generation.[90]
In the run-up to the 2016 US presidential election, she became increasingly politically active. In 2015, Silverman endorsed Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders for President of the United States, saying, “He says what he means and he means what he says, and he’s not for sale.” She had previously endorsed Sanders at a rally in Los Angeles, California that drew an audience of over 27,500 people.[5]
She initially supported Sanders, but later endorsed Hillary Clinton at the 2016 Democratic National Convention after the Democratic nomination. In her congressional address, she urged other Sanders supporters to support Clinton, and later, amid boos from some Sanders supporters, said, “Let me just say.
