The Blue Lagoon is a 1980 American romantic survival drama film directed by Randal Kleiser from a screenplay by Douglas Day Stewart and based on the 1908 novel of the same name by Henry De Vere Stacpoole. The film stars are Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins. The musical score was composed by Basil Poledouris and the camera by Néstor Almendros.
The film tells the story of two young children stranded on a tropical island paradise in the South Pacific. But without society’s guidance or restrictions, emotional and physical changes occur as they reach puberty and fall in love.
The Blue Lagoon was released theatrically on June 20, 1980 by Columbia Pictures. The film was panned by critics, who disparaged its script, execution, and Shields’ performance. However, the cinematography of Almendros was praised. Despite the criticism, the film was a commercial success, grossing over $58 million on a budget of $4.5 million and becoming the ninth highest-grossing film of 1980 in North America. The film was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Fantasy Film, Almendros received an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography, and Atkins was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year – Actor. In the late Victorian era, two young cousins, nine-year-old Richard (Glenn Kohan as Young Richard) and seven-year-old Emmeline Lestrange (Elva Josephson as Young Emmeline), and a galley cook, Paddy Button (Leo McKern), survive a shipwreck in the South Pacific and reach a lush tropical island. Paddy takes care of the children and forbids them by “law” to go to the other side of the island because he found remains of bloody human sacrifices on an altar there. He also warns them not to eat the deadly scarlet berries. Paddy later dies after a drunken seizure. Now alone, the children go to another part of the island and rebuild their home.
As Richard and Emmeline hit puberty, their experience is distressing due to their lack of education about human sexuality. Emmeline is the first to experience sexual attraction (to Richard), which she feels uncomfortable about and refuses to share her “funny” thoughts with him. She is terrified of her first menstrual period and refuses to allow Richard to examine her for a wound he fancies.
Eventually, Richard realizes his own attraction to Emmeline. She ventures to the forbidden side of the island and sees the altar. Associating the blood on the altar with the blood of Christ’s crucifixion, she concludes that the altar is God and tries to persuade Richard to go to the other side of the island to pray with her. Richard is shocked at the idea of breaking the law and the two argue. Later, when Richard tries to have sexual contact with Emmeline, she rebuffs him; he hides from her and masturbates.
A ship appears for the first time in years, but Emmeline doesn’t light the beacon and the ship sails by without noticing her. When Richard angrily confronts Emmeline about their failure, she claims – to Richard’s disbelief – that the island is now her home and that they should stay there. Emmeline reveals that she knows about Richard’s masturbation and threatens to tell her Uncle Arthur about it. They fight and Emmeline throws a coconut at Richard, accidentally hitting him in the head. Angry and hurt, Richard punches her, throwing Emmeline out of her lair.
Emmeline accidentally steps on a poisonous stonefish. Weak from the poison, she begs Richard to “take her to God”. Richard carries her to the other side of the island and places her on the altar and says a prayer. Emmeline recovers and Richard admits his fear of losing her. After Emmeline regains her ability to walk, the two swim naked in the lagoon and then swim to shore. Richard and Emmeline, noticing their bodies’ reactions as they play together, discover intercourse and become lovers. As a result, Emmeline becomes pregnant, although neither of them realize her pregnancy. Instead, they are stunned when they feel the baby move inside their tummy and assume it is their stomach that is causing the movements.
Months later, Richard is alone at the shelter and hears a noise in the distance and goes straight to the other side of the island. There he discovers a group of native people performing a ritual in front of the statue as a ceremony in which they sacrifice someone. Richard gets scared and runs off to find Emmeline, who he finds in labor. Emmeline gives birth to a baby boy they name Paddy.
A ship, led by Richard’s father Arthur (William Daniels), approaches the island and sees the family playing on the shore. Noticing the ship, Richard and Emmeline, rather than signaling for help, walk away, content with their lives. Because they are covered in mud, their appearance is difficult to pinpoint, and Arthur assumes they are not Richard and Emmeline.
One day the family takes the lifeboat to visit their original home. Richard searches for bananas, leaving Emmeline and Paddy with the boat. Emmeline doesn’t notice as Paddy brings a sprig of the scarlet berries into the boat. Emmeline and Paddy slowly drift away and Paddy throws one of the oars out of the boat. Unable to reach the rudder, Emmeline calls out to Richard and he swims to her, followed closely by a shark. Emmeline throws the other oar at the shark, hitting it and giving Richard time to get in the boat. The boat is caught by the current and drifts out to sea.
After days of wandering around, Richard and Emmeline wake up to find Paddy eating the berries he picked. Desperate, Richard and Emmeline also eat the berries and lie down to await death. A few hours later, Arthur’s ship finds them. Arthur asks, “Are they dead?” The captain (Gus Mercurio) reassures him, “No, sir. You’re asleep”.

The film was a passion of Randal Kleiser, who had long admired the original novel. He hired Douglas Day Stewart, who had written The Boy in the Plastic Bubble, to write the screenplay and met Richard Franklin, the Australian director who was looking for work in Hollywood. This gave him the idea of using an Australian crew, which Franklin helped oversee.[3]
The film was shot on Nanuya Levu, a privately owned island in Fiji.[4] The flora and fauna featured in the film includes a range of animals from multiple continents, including a species of iguana previously unknown to biologists. Herpetologist John Gibbons traveled to the island where the iguana was filmed after seeing the film and described the Fiji crested leiguan (Brachylophus vitiensis) in 1981.[5]
Shields was 14 years old when she appeared in the film.[6] All of her nude scenes were performed by the film’s 32-year-old stunt coordinator, Kathy Troutt.[7] Shields filmed many of her topless scenes with her hair taped to her breasts.[8][9] Atkins was 18 when the film was made and he performed his own nude scenes (including brief frontal nudity).

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an 8% approval rating based on 25 reviews, with an average rating of 3.3/10. The site’s critical consensus reads, “The Blue Lagoon is a lovely bitch, a sassy fantasy that’s also too chaste to be truly entertaining.”[14] The film has a weighted average score of 31 out of 100, based on Metacritic to 14 critics pointing to “generally unfavorable reviews”.[15]
Among the more common criticisms have been the ridiculously idyllic portrayal of how children would flourish outside of civilized society,[7][16][17] the unfulfilled accumulation of the island’s native people as a climatic threat[7][16] and the manner , as the film, while teasing a lustful appeal, conspicuously masks any sexual activity.[16][17] Roger Ebert gave the film 1½ stars out of 4, claiming that it “could have been made incredibly interesting if any serious attempt had been made to explore what might really happen if two 7-year-old children were shipwrecked on an island. But This is not a realistic film. It’s a wildly idealized romance where the kids live in what looks like a Club Med honeymoon cottage while restless natives carry out human sacrifices across the island.” He also felt the ending was a glaring blip. [16] He and Gene Siskel chose the film as one of their “Dogs of the Year” in a 1980 episode of Sneak Previews. Time Out commented that the film “was hyped as a theme of ‘natural love’; but apart from ‘doing it in the open air’ there is nothing natural about two children (freed from the shackles of society from their early years) subscribing to marriage and traditional role-playing.”[17] Gary Arnold of the The Washington Post similarly called the film “a picturesque rhapsody about learning skills, playing house, going swimming, enjoying the scenery and starting to feel sexy in tropical seclusion”. He particularly poked fun at the main characters’ persistent inability to draw obvious conclusions.[7]
In a retrospective review for RogerEbert.com, critic Abbey Bender wrote: “When it comes to depicting burgeoning sexuality, ‘The Blue Lagoon’ wants to have both… with puberty being felt through some fairly obvious dialogue. Sexual discovery here is the natural result of the picture-perfect situation. So yes, the soft focus montages of teenage meat are unnecessary, but the film portrays it all as innocent – these kids don’t even know what sex is! They don’t even know how a baby is made! You learn it the hard way, of course. By expressing sexuality in primitive purity, The Blue Lagoon gets away with a perversion that would probably be even more controversial today.”[6]

The Blue Lagoon is based on the novel of the same name by Henry De Vere Stacpoole, which was first published in 1908. The first film adaptation of the book was the 1923 British silent film of the same name. There was another British adaptation in 1949.[27]
The sequel Return to the Blue Lagoon (1991) loosely picked up where The Blue Lagoon left off, except that Richard and Emmeline were found dead in the boat. Her son is saved.[28]

A limited edition Blu-ray Disc of the film was released by Twilight Time on December 11, 2012. Special features on the Blu-ray include an isolated score, an original trailer, three original teasers, a behind-the-scenes feature entitled “An Adventure in Filmmaking: The Making of The Blue Lagoon” and audio commentary by Randal Kleiser and Douglas Day Stewart and Brooke Shields and a second commentary by Randal Kleiser and Christopher Atkins.[33][34]

She was a die hard fan of the Miami Dolphins, she loved the Smurfs, she had a collection of about 50 prized ceramic teddy bears which she has proudly displayed in her home for the last 20 years. She also liked her racing cars…. but she always ruined them… Elva was too fast, too angry. Elva was a second mother to so many. You knew you were privy to the family when she licked you somewhere on the face! She was a big kid at heart and loved to play around. She had a big smile and a laugh that was contagious. She influenced so many people and will be greatly missed.
Elva was died by her parents Joe Herrera Sr. & Maria Herrera, her brother Joe Herrera Jr.; Nephews Roy Vialpando and David Vialpando. She is survived by her children Mercedes Bernabei (Adam Leyba), Dion Herrera (Samantha Herrera) & Alexandra Herrera; goddaughter Divinity Herrera; grandchildren Josiah Bernabei-Lara, Jovany Herrera-Lucero, Amiah Hernandez, Luciano Herrera-Vigil, Malcolm Leyba, Rayleen Escamilla-Castellano, Natawny Escamilla, Selena Escamilla; Sister Lucy Ortega (Levi Ortega) and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.
