Erica Durance (born June 21, 1978[2]) is a Canadian actress. She is known for her roles as Lois Lane on the WB/CW superhero television series Smallville and as Dr. Alex Reid on the CTV series Saving Hope.
Early life[edit]
Durance was born in Calgary to parents Gail and Joel Durance and grew up on a turkey farm in Three Hills, Alberta, Canada, with her older brother and sister.[3] She was trained as a classical singer from an early age. After graduating from high school, Durance moved to Vancouver in 1999 to pursue her interest in professional acting.[4] She continued her acting training at the Yaletown Actors Studio for many years with her trainer and husband David Palffy.

Durance began her career doing background work, doing commercials and guest roles.[3] Durance made her feature film debut in the film The Untold (2002). She has had guest roles on the comedy series The Chris Isaak Show and the supernatural series The Collector. In Tru Calling, her character was a beauty pageant contender alongside Eliza Dushku. On the SyFy channel, she played an intergalactic librarian in Andromeda and a love interest for Teal’c in Stargate SG-1.
In addition to acting, Durance has worked as a supporting actor agent and booked photo doubles for the television series Smallville. Durance considered quitting acting when she was cast to play Lois Lane in Smallville in 2004.[5] She played a cheeky, street smart teenage Lois in season four. Recalling the hiring of Durance, producer Kelly Souders said, “There were a lot of wonderful actresses who came for the role, but I remember sitting there and watching her video and everyone was like, ‘That’s her. None Ask’.”[6] Souders also noted that “Lois has to be one of the hardest characters to play because she’s super headstrong, extremely bright and a little gruff, and at the same time she has to be likable.”[7] Producer Brian Peterson added that from the moment Durance was hired, they knew she would be Lois for the series. Durance was promoted to series regular in season five and became part of the regular cast for the remainder of the series run. Speaking of playing Lois Lane, Durance said, “Everyone has their specific idea of who Lois Lane is to them and you have your overall plan, but then you have to try to make it your own. That’s the only way to try and be honest about what you’re doing.[9] It’s an experience I will always cherish and never forget. Lois is a beloved character. I took that seriously and put my heart and soul into her for seven years. I loved every minute and I am forever changed by it.”[4]
Durance appeared in the films The Butterfly Effect 2 (2006) and Island Heat: Stranded (2006). She was nominated for a Gemini Award for the Lifetime film I Me Wed (2007). She starred as Maid Marian in Beyond Sherwood Forest (2009) and appeared in the film Sophie and Sheba (2010) as an aerial silk performer at the circus. In 2011, she made a guest appearance on the television series Charlie’s Angels as CIA agent Samantha Masters.[12] She played twin sisters Angela and Christine in the Italian TV miniseries 6 passi nel giallo and appeared in the 2012 NBC series Harry’s Law.
In June 2012, Durance began starring on the CTV television series Saving Hope as Chief Surgical Dr. to play Alex Reid. She also served as a producer on the series and directed the fourth season episode “Torn and Frayed.”[17] In Season 3, Durance’s real-life pregnancy was incorporated into her character Alex Reid and the series. Saving Hope ended its run in 2017.
Durance starred in the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Channel film Wedding Planner Mystery (2014). The film was based on Deborah Donnelly’s novel Veiled Threats and would be the first film in the network’s adaptation of the Mystery Wheel series.[18] In 2015, she appeared in the thriller Painkillers with Tahmoh Penikett.[19]
Durance appeared on the CW television series Supergirl in recurring roles as Kara’s Kryptonian mother, Alura Zor-El, and as Agent Noel Neill in the episode “Midvale”.
