ATLANTA – An Atlanta school community mourns the sudden death of an elderly woman after contracting meningitis.

Helen Wamey was a senior at Atlanta’s Marist School and was due to graduate next spring.

The school said in an Instagram post that they were “heartbroken” over her death on Wednesday.

“Helen was a beloved member of our school community who will be deeply missed by all,” the Catholic school’s post read. “We pray for the rest of Helen’s soul and for her family and friends, lifting her and each other as we come together to find strength in one another and in our God who is our comfort in times of sorrow.”

What you need to know about meningitis

It’s relatively rare for meningitis to be fatal, but it can be life-threatening when transmitted as a bacterial infection that quickly causes inflammation that puts pressure on the brain and spinal cord.

It can result in death within hours or leave survivors with permanent brain damage and other disabilities.

Symptoms include sudden high fever, stiff neck, sudden severe headache while some secondary symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, confusion and sensitivity to light.

According to the Mayo Clinic, bacterial meningitis occurs when certain bacteria “enter the bloodstream and travel to the brain and spinal cord,” causing the condition.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that the bacteria that cause meningitis can be spread from person to person or sometimes through food. The CDC says some people can have the bacteria in their bodies without being sick and can become “carriers” that unknowingly expose others.

According to the CDC, bacteria that can cause it include group B Streptococcus and E. coli (usually transmitted from mothers to infants during childbirth); H. influenzae, M. tuberculosis and S. pneumoniae (spread by coughing or sneezing in close contact); N. meningitidis (transmitted by sharing saliva or spit in close contact, e.g. kissing or sometimes coughing); and E. coli (usually ingested from eating food prepared by someone who did not wash their hands thoroughly after using the toilet).

The CDC says symptoms can develop 3-7 days after exposure. If caught early, it can be treated with a variety of antibiotics.

According to the CDC, there are vaccines for four of the different types of bacteria that can cause the deadliest forms of meningitis:

OBITUARY

Helen Bawak Wamey

January 12, 2004 – September 29, 2021

IN CARE OF Roswell Funeral Home & Green Lawn Cemetery & Mausoleum

Mrs. Helen Bawak Wamey, age 17, of Johns Creek, Georgia, retired on Wednesday, September 29, 2021. Helen was born on January 12, 2004 in Atlanta, Georgia to Belinda Enyong and Innocent Wamey. From the moment Helen was born, we knew she was destined for great things — and she didn’t disappoint. There are no words under heaven that can adequately describe the impact Helen has left on this world. When she met Helen it was her smile, confidence and kindness that emanated from her. Helen was a high achiever and a gifted child, strong in her heritage, strong in her passions and even stronger in her faith. Helen was a parishioner and altar boy at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church in Sandy Springs and theological director of her school. Helen attended Woodland Elementary, then transferred to St. Martin’s Episcopal and was currently a Senior Honors student at Marist School. After high school, Helen planned to attend one of the Ivy League schools for premed and eventually medicine. Because of her empathetic nature, we know that she would have excelled at that as well and would have been an excellent oncologist (her preferred specialty if given the opportunity). She was involved in various sports in her early teens, but her greatest passion was dancing. Helen started dancing with the FootNotes Dance and Acrobatic Center at the age of four. Her dancing talent was incredible, resulting in her winning multiple dance competitions and receiving countless awards. Helen was an amazing young lady and the center of her mother’s world. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, cousin, niece and friend; Helen will surely be missed by all who knew and loved her. Helen was preceded in death by her grandparents, Helen and Sylvester Enyong. Helen is survived by her devoted mother Belinda Enyong, aunts, uncles, siblings and father Innocent Wamey. The visit will take place on Friday, October 22 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Roswell Funeral Home Chapel. The funeral Mass in honor of Mrs. Helen Wamey will begin at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 23 in the Marist School Auditorium. Funeral services will proceed immediately adjacent to the Waterside Estates of Green Lawn Cemetery in Roswell. Mrs. Helen Bawak Wamey’s funeral was entrusted to the Roswell Funeral Home, 950 Mansell Road Roswell, Georgia 30076.
