Personal [edit]

Swimming career[edit]
De Bruijn tried several sports before finally specializing in swimming. De Bruijn debuted at the World Aquatics Championships in January 1991, winning a bronze medal in the 4 × 100 m relay, with which she won the gold medal at the LC European Championships in August of the same year.
The following year, de Bruijn made her Olympic debut at the 1992 Summer Olympics, finishing 8th in the 100 m and 4 × 100 m freestyle events. She did not compete in the 1996 Summer Olympics. In 1999 she won the European Championships over 50 m freestyle. After breaking several world records in the 50m freestyle, she competed in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia the following year. She won the 50m and 100m freestyle and the 100m butterfly, setting world records in all three disciplines. She also won a silver medal in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay. Her nickname became “Invincible Inky”.
She was named World Swimmer of the Year by Swimming World in both 2000 and 2001. At the 2001 World Championships, she won titles in three events. At the 2003 World Championships, de Bruijn successfully defended her titles in the 50m freestyle and butterfly. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, she defended her gold medal in the free 50m and took silver in the free 100m and two bronzes: one in the 100m butterfly and another in the 4 × 100m relay. This makes her the oldest individual winner in the history of Olympic swimming. That record was surpassed only by Anthony Ervin, aged 36, who won the gold medal in the men’s 50m freestyle at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. De Bruijn’s 2004 title retains his place as the oldest female Olympic champion in swimming history.
With a total Olympic medal of four gold, two silver and two bronze medals, she is the second most successful Dutch Olympian of all time, tied on points. Additionally, her combined nine individual titles, won at the Olympics (four) and World Swimming Championships (five), were a record for female swimmers until Katie Ledecky won her 10th at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
In March 2007, de Bruijn announced her retirement from competitive swimming.

Inge de Bruijn Dutch athlete
Inge de Bruijn (born August 24, 1973 in Barendrecht, Netherlands), Dutch swimmer who became one of the most successful competitors in women’s swimming history with eight Olympic medals (2000, 2004) and five world championships.
De Bruijn started swimming at the age of 7 and competed in her first international competition when she was 12. She joined the elite of swimming when she won four medals at the 1991 European Championships in Athens. Food poisoning almost forced her to miss the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, but she competed and finished eighth in the 50-meter freestyle and ninth in the 100-meter butterfly. However, as the 1996 Atlanta Olympics approached, de Bruijn’s enthusiasm for swimming waned. Even after making the national team, she skipped practice or showed up late. Jacco Verhaeren, her coach and friend, asked her to leave the team.

In 1997, de Bruijn began training under well-known swimming coach Paul Bergen. The workouts he tailored for her included weight training and other strength exercises, as well as swimming. The regime did not bring immediate results, but at the 1999 European Championships, de Bruijn showed renewed signs of life, winning two gold medals and setting a European record in the 100m butterfly. Then, in the spring and summer before the 2000 Games in Sydney, she put on a furious winning streak. When the games started, de Bruijn held world records in the 50m and 100m freestyle and the 50m and 100m butterfly. As with other “older” swimmers, de Bruijn’s surprising success at the relatively advanced age of 26 raised suspicions of the use of performance-enhancing drugs. De Bruijn, who has never failed a drug test, has denied allegations of drug use and attributed her success to coaching, training and using new swimwear that had been shown to improve her times and those of other swimmers.

In Sydney, she won gold medals in the 100m butterfly, 100m freestyle and 50m freestyle, setting new world records in each of these disciplines. She also won a silver medal as part of the Dutch 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay team. She continued her dominance of sprint events at the 2001 and 2003 World Championships, winning five titles. De Bruijn put on a similarly impressive performance at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, taking a gold medal (50m freestyle), a silver medal (100m freestyle) and two bronze medals (4 × 100m freestyle relay and 100- meter butterfly). In 2007 she retired from competitive swimming.
