Early life[edit]
Turner was born on June 19, 1954 in Springfield, Missouri,[4] to Patsy (née Magee)[5] and Allen Richard Turner, a U.S. Foreign Service[6], who grew up in China (where Turner’s great-grandfather was a Methodist missionary). She is the third of four children and the only one born in the United States. She has one sister, Susan, and two brothers.[8][9][10]
Turner grew up in a strictly conservative Christian household, and her interest in performing was discouraged by both of her parents: “My father was a missionary,” she later explained, “so theater and acting were just a step away from being a street runner, you know? So when I was performing at school, he would drive my mom [there] and get in the car. She came out at breaks and told him, ‘She’s doing very well.'”[9][11 ]
Due to her father’s employment in the Foreign Service, Turner grew up abroad, in Canada, Cuba, Venezuela and London, England. She attended high school at the American School in London, graduating in 1972.[8] “The beginning of real acting for me was during high school in London,” she explained in her 2008 memoir. “We were seven of us who were kind of theatrical mafia. We produced, directed, acted, chose the plays, fired one teacher and hired another.” Her father died of coronary thrombosis a week before she graduated, and the family returned to Springfield, Missouri. At age 19, Turner began volunteering at a local Planned Parenthood office.[2]
She attended Southwest Missouri State University for two years and majored in theater. During this time, director Herbert Blau saw her performance in The House of Blue Leaves and invited her to spend her senior year at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1977. Theater work and Broadway debut
A few months after moving to New York City in 1977, Turner took on the female lead in Michael Zetter’s play Mister T, which starred Jonathan Frakes and was set at the Soho Repertory Theatre. This production marked her Off-Broadway debut. A few months later, Turner made her Broadway debut as Judith Hastings in Albert Innaurato’s Gemini, staged at the Little Theater (now known as the Helen Hayes Theatre) with Danny Aiello. It opened on May 21, 1977 when she appeared on the soap opera The Doctors.[20]

In 1978, Turner made her television debut on the NBC soap opera The Doctors as the second Nola Dancy Aldrich. She made her film debut as the ruthless Matty Walker in the 1981 thriller Body Heat; The role brought her to international fame. Empire cited the film in 1995 when it named her one of the 100 sexiest stars in cinema history.[21] The New York Times wrote in 2005 that fueled by her “stunning film debut [in] Body Heat… she has built a career on a spirit of adventure and outspoken sexuality born of robust physicality”.[11] Turner eventually went on to become one of the top box office and most in-demand actresses of the 1980s and early 1990s.
Turner explained in 2018, “Body heat was a blessing because I went straight into a leading actor and didn’t suffer from this predatory male behavior like many young actresses do. It doesn’t frustrate me that nearly four decades later. I’m still being called a sexual icon in this film, I’m long past that.”[22]
With her deep voice, Turner has often been compared to a young Lauren Bacall. When the two met, Turner reportedly introduced herself by saying, “Hi, I’m young you.”[23]
Fame in the 1980s[edit]
After Body Heat, Turner steered away from femme fatale roles to “prevent typing” and “because femme fatale roles had a shelf life”. Consequently, her first project thereafter was the 1983 comedy The Man With Two Brains. Turner co-starred with Michael Douglas and Danny DeVito in Romancing the Stone. Film critic Pauline Kael wrote of her performance as writer Joan Wilder: “Turner knows how to use her dimples amusingly and dance like a woman who didn’t know she could; her star performance is exhilarating.”[24] Romancing the Stone was a surprise hit: she won a Golden Globe for her role in the film, and it became one of the top ten grossing films of 1984.[25] Turner reunited with Douglas and DeVito the following year for the sequel The Jewel of the Nile. Pre-production for the film was fraught with conflict because Turner refused to commit to the “horrible” script that had been handed to her. When she said no, 20th Century Fox threatened her with a $25 million breach of contract lawsuit. Eventually, Douglas, also the film’s producer, agreed to rewrite the script to make it more acceptable to Turner, which caused a lot of back-and-forth between the two as the script retooled until filming began in Fez, Morocco .[26]
A few months before Jewel, Turner starred with Jack Nicholson in Prizzi’s honor, won a second Golden Globe Award, and later starred in Peggy Sue Got Married with Nicolas Cage. For Peggy Sue she received the award for best actress from the U.S. National Board of Review of Motion Pictures[27] and an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
In 1988’s Toon-Noir Who Framed Roger Rabbit, she was the speaking voice of cartoon femme fatale Jessica Rabbit, and intoned the famous line, “I’m not bad, I’m just attracted to it.” Her uncredited, sultry performance was hailed as “the kind of sexpot ball breaker it was made for”. (Amy Irving provided Jessica Rabbit’s singing voice in the scene where the character first appears in the film.) That same year, Turner also appeared in Switching Channels, a loose remake of the hit 1940 film His Girl Friday; this in turn was a loose remake of the Ben Hecht-Charles MacArthur comedy The Front Page.[29]
Turner was the subject of Austrian techno-pop singer Falco’s 1986 song “The Kiss of Kathleen Turner”. In 1989, Turner worked with Douglas and DeVito a third time in The War of the Roses, but this time as Douglas’ disaffected wife, with DeVito in the role of a divorce lawyer telling their story together. The New York Times praised the trio, saying, “Mr. Douglas and Ms. Turner have never been a more enjoyable team…each of them is at their funniest when they’re as awful as they both have to be around here. .. [Kathleen Turner is] devilishly adorable.”[30] In this film, Turner played a former gymnast and, as in other roles, did many of her own stunts. (Two years later, she broke her nose while filming V.I. Warshawski in 1991.)[31][32]
1990s – slowed by rheumatoid arthritis[ edit ]
Turner remained an A-list movie star leading lady through the early 1990s, starring in V.I. Warshawski and Undercover Blues until rheumatoid arthritis severely limited their activities. She also blamed her age, explaining, “When I was 40, roles started to slow down, I started getting offers to play mothers and grandmothers.”
In 1992, while filming Serial Mom, she developed “unexplained pain and fever.” Rheumatoid arthritis was diagnosed about a year later. At the time of diagnosis, she “could barely turn her head or walk and was told she would end up in a wheelchair.”[11] Of that time she said: “My body could only respond with excruciating pain when I tried to move at all. The joints in my hands were so swollen that I could not hold a pen. Some days I couldn’t hold up a glass to drink some water. I couldn’t pick up my child…my feet would explode so badly I couldn’t put them in any shoes let alone walk in them.
Turner’s appearance changed after being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. “The press was merciless,” she says in her memoirs. “They snapped that I’d gotten fat and unrecognizable because I was an angry, washed-up diva, an out-of-control entity, when in truth the changes in my physical appearance were caused by drugs and chemotherapy and weren’t out of my control. Still, I didn’t reveal what happened to me.”
As her rheumatoid arthritis progressed, drinking became a problem. “At first I drank consciously to relieve the pain… Later, after I got the new medication and the pain subsided, I continued to drink too much… It didn’t hurt my work, but it hurt me personally.”
Turner has admitted that drinking made it difficult for her to be around.[37] In 2005, a New York Times article said, “Rumors began to circulate that she was drinking too much.” wanted to believe. A lot of people bought me the assumption that I had become a heavy drinker. I couldn’t refute them publicly because I believed it was worse when people knew I had this terrible disease. They hired me when they thought I was a drunk because they understand alcohol, but they didn’t hire me when I had a mysterious, scary illness, they didn’t understand that. We – Jay, my agent, myself – felt it was imperative to sedate my rheumatoid arthritis.”
Her career as a leading actress went downhill and she appeared in less and less successful films. She turned down starring roles in Ghost and The Bridges of Madison County, both of which became big hits. She has appeared in the low-budget House of Cards and comedy Moonlight & Valentino, and has had supporting roles in A Simple Wish, The Real Blonde and Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides. She also provided the voice of Malibu Stacy creator Stacy Lovell on The Simpsons episode “Lisa vs. Malibu Stacy.”
2000s – Remission[ edit ]
Despite drug therapy to alleviate her condition, the disease progressed for about eight years. Then, thanks to newly available treatments, her rheumatoid arthritis went into remission. She has appeared increasingly on television, including three episodes of Friends in which she appeared as Chandler Bing’s father, a drag performer.
In 2006, Turner guest starred in FX’s Nip/Tuck, playing a phone sex operator who needs throat surgery. She appeared in a small role in 2008’s Marley & Me and also played a defense attorney in Law & Order. In 2009, she played the role of Charlie Runkle’s sexually hyperactive boss in the third season of the television series Californication.
Turner starred in the 2011 indie film The Perfect Family and had supporting roles in 2014’s Nurse 3D (2013) and the comedy sequel Dumb and Dumber To.

Turner provided the voice of Jessica Rabbit in the 1988 live action/animated film Who Framed Roger Rabbit, its three animated short spinoffs, and in the Disneyland attraction spinoff, Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin. In 2006, Turner voiced the character Constance in the animated film Monster House. She later provided radio commercial voice-overs for Lay’s Potato Chips. BBC Radio 4 produced four radio plays based on the novels by V.I. Warshawski by Sara Paretsky. Two of them, Killing Orders and Deadlock, released in 2007, starred Turner in a reprise of her 1991 film role based on Paretsky’s novel Deadlock; In the last series, Bitter Medicine, released in 2009, Sharon Gless took on the role. In 2015, she narrated the anthology drama film Emily & Tim. Turner has also had guest roles on the animated series King of the Hill, Family Guy, 3Below: Tales of Arcadia, Rick and Morty, Summer Camp Island, and Wizards: Tales of Arcadia.
Stage career[ edit ]
After roles in the 1990s in Broadway productions of Indiscretions and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (for which she received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress), Turner moved to London in 2000 to star in a stage version of The Graduate. The BBC reported that initially mediocre ticket sales for The Graduate “went through the roof when it was announced that Turner, then 45, would appear naked on stage”. While her performance as the infamous Mrs. Robinson was popular with audiences, with sustained strong box office for the duration of Turner’s run, she received mixed reviews from critics. The play was transferred to Broadway in 2002 to similar critical response.
In 2005, Turner beat out a number of other competitors (including Jessica Lange, Frances McDormand and Bette Midler)[11] for the role of Martha in a Broadway revival of Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at the Longacre Theater. Albee later told The New York Times that as she read out for the role with her eventual co-star Bill Irwin, Turner “heard an echo of the ‘revelation’ he felt years ago when [Uta] played the roles.” Hagen and Arthur Hill.” He added that Turner had “an air of lust, a woman with an appetite, yes…but also an air of suffering.”[11]
Ben Brantley gave Turner extensive praise, writing:
“As the cannibal Martha, Ms. Turner, a movie star whose previous theater work has been variable, is finally securing her place as a top-notch, deep stage actress… At 50, this actress can look alternately gorgeous and devastated. In the second act she is as predatory as she is in the movie Body Heat. But in the third and final act she looks old, stripped, stripped of all erotic flourishes. I did not do it. I don’t think I could ever see Virginia Woolf again without thinking of Ms. Hagen [Uta Hagen]. But seeing Ms. Turner in that final act, fully clothed but more naked than ever in The Graduate, I didn’t see the ghost of Ms. Hagen. All I saw was Ms. Turner. No, let’s be fair. All I saw was Martha.”[40]
As Martha, Turner earned her second Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Play, losing to Cherry Jones. The production moved to London’s Apollo Theater in 2006. She starred in Sandra Ryan Heyward’s one-woman show Tallulah, with which she toured the United States.
In August 2010, Turner portrayed the role of Sister Jamison Connelly in Matthew Lombardo’s drama High at Hartford TheatreWorks. The production transferred to Broadway at the Booth Theater where it opened in previews on March 25, 2011, officially April 19, 2011, and quickly closed on April 24, 2011. In a rare move, however, the production was revived under Turner’s direction to embark on a national tour, beginning in Boston in December 2012.
From August to October 28, 2012, Turner appeared in Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins, a play about legendary liberal Texan columnist Molly Ivins at the Arena Stage in Washington, DC. In December 2014 and January 2015, Turner performed the same show at the Berkeley Repertory Theater. She appeared again on the Arena Stage in the title role of Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage, which opened in February 2014, and played Joan Didion in the one-woman show The Year of Magical Thinking, based on Didion’s memoir of the same name. in October and November 2016.[47] In February 2019, Turner made his Metropolitan Opera debut in New York City in the speaking role of the Duchess of Krakentorp in Donizetti’s opera La fille du régiment.[48]
Personal life[edit]
Turner married New York City real estate entrepreneur Jay Weiss in 1984 and they had one daughter, singer Rachel Ann Weiss, who was born on October 14, 1987. Turner and Weiss divorced in December 2007, but Turner said, “[Jay] is still my best friend.”[49]
By the late 1980s, Turner had earned a reputation for being difficult, which The New York Times described as a “certifiable diva”. She admitted she’d turned into a “not very kind person,” and actress Eileen Atkins – with whom she starred in the Broadway play Indiscretions – called her “an amazing nightmare.” In 2018, she commented on her reputation, saying, “The ‘difficult’ thing was pure gender crap. When a man comes on set and says, ‘That’s how I see it,’ people say, ‘He’s crucial.’ When a woman does it, they say, ‘Oh, fuck. There she goes.'”[26]
Turner has defended himself against Atkins’ claims, saying that Atkins harbored animosity towards her because she had trouble memorizing her lines, which Atkins found very unprofessional. Turner later realized that the new drug she was taking for her rheumatoid arthritis made her “blurry.” She added that on days when the rheumatoid arthritis in her wrist was particularly bad and she warned the other cast members not to touch it, Atkins intentionally sat on it during a scene where Turner had to play dead, which Turner extreme pain ] Turner has criticized Hollywood for the disparity in the quality of roles offered to male and female actors as they age, calling the disparity a “horrible double standard.”
A few weeks after leaving production of The Graduate in November 2002, she was admitted to the Geisinger Marworth Treatment Center in Waverly, Pennsylvania, for treatment for alcoholism. “I have no problem with alcohol when I work,” she explained. “When I’m home alone, I can’t control my drinking… I went towards excess. I mean really! I think I lost my control over it. So it pulled me back.”[11]

Turner has worked for Planned Parenthood of America since he was 19 and later became its chairman. She also serves on the board of directors of People for the American Way and volunteers with Amnesty International and Citymeals-on-Wheels. She was one of John Kerry’s first prominent supporters. She was a frequent donor to the Democratic Party. She has also worked to raise awareness of rheumatoid arthritis.[50]
Memoirs and Interviews[edit]
In the mid-2000s, Turner collaborated with Gloria Feldt on writing her memoir, Send Yourself Roses: Thoughts on My Life, Love, and Leading Roles. The book was published in 2008.[52] In the book, Turner claimed that while filming Peggy Sue Got Married, her co-star Nicolas Cage got drunk and stole a Chihuahua he liked.[53] In return, Cage filed a lawsuit against Turner and her book publisher in the UK, who took an excerpt from the book and published it (prior to publication) on their website.[53] Cage argued with defamation and harm of character and won the case, resulting in recantations, legal fees and a donation to charity. Turner later issued a public apology.[54] During an interview on The View, Turner apologized for any distress she may have caused Cage regarding an incident that took place 20 years earlier.[55][56]
On August 7, 2018, Vulture published an in-depth interview with Turner, in which she gave her opinions on a variety of topics, from Elizabeth Taylor’s acting skills to what it was like to meet Donald Trump in the 1980s. Turner’s frankness and certain revelations she made led to the article being circulated in various media outlets, leading to her name trending on Google.[58]

While a surprise visit from Luker dashed those hopes, Turner fondly recalls the dynamic.
“It was this wonderful sexual tension, you know?” She says. “When you really, really know you want someone – and I’m saying it went both ways – and you can’t have them. It is simply beautiful.”
Douglas, 76, isn’t one to ponder what could have been — “Life’s different and you can’t really have any doubts,” he says — but he recalls Turner making quite an impression on Kirk Douglas when he Mexico flew to visit him.
“We went out to dinner and as a surprise I said, ‘Kathleen, why don’t you pick up dad?’ and he opened the door and there was Kathleen at her finest,” he says.

“She loved ‘old Kirk Douglas’. He was her biggest fan,” he says.
After romance and two other hit films in the 1980s, The Jewel of the Nile and The War of the Roses, Turner and Douglas stayed in touch and have been friends for almost 40 years.
“You protect and appreciate when you have a good relationship,” says Douglas.

Now, three decades after their last collaboration, the stars are reuniting for the third and final season of Douglas’ Netflix series The Kominsky Method, in which they play a tumultuous divorced couple.
