Jevon McFerrin, a ‘Hamilton’ standby on Broadway, gets his big chance
He’s not worried. He is happy. Jevon McFerrin grew up listening to the upbeat lyrics of his father’s Grammy-winning song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” but the irresistibly catchy tune could now be his theme song.
McFerrin, 31 – son of jazz star Bobby McFerrin and grandson of the late operatic baritone Robert McFerrin – has been a stand-in for several of the lead roles on “Hamilton” since joining the Broadway mega-phenomenon in September. But he got his chance on January 7th when he was asked to portray the hottest Founding Father himself, a role penned by series creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, who has gone on to play him five more times.
Jevon’s father has seen him on the show twice – once in the dual roles of Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, once as Hamilton. He remembers their meeting after the curtain as “a real moment. I don’t know if I can describe that moment, but being able to make my father so proud was the pinnacle of my career.”
In fact, Jevon only joined the company on his third try — first before its Public Theater premiere in February 2015, and again before its Broadway transfer in August. When he finally got on, he knew the soundtrack by heart. But he still hadn’t been able to get a ticket.
As an on-call service, he reports to the theater every day and is only allowed to leave the theater 15 minutes before closing – “If something happens,” he admits to the stress, but emphasizes the reward. He says that substitutions have some freedom of interpretation. “There are points you have to make because the show is such a machine, but the most important thing is to tell your story, Hamilton’s story, honestly.”

If the audience was disappointed when people found out they won’t be seeing the current Hamilton, Javier Munoz, McFerrin, they didn’t listen. “There might be a few sighs at the beginning,” he says, “but it’s such a beautiful piece, with the choreography, the music and the lights. Until people see the show, it doesn’t matter who was there to tell this amazing story. The show is the star.”

Bobby McFerrin, singer of the extra class, has a philosophy for his purely improvised concerts: “We go on stage empty, but we leave it full.”

Last week, McFerrin called from his home in Philadelphia, hesitantly answered a few questions, and then explained, “Gosh, it’s been three years since I’ve given an interview. I forgot how to answer these questions.”
He agreed to speak before his rare four-night stand this week at the Dakota, a return to the Twin Cities, where he lived from 1994 to 2001 when he served as creative chairman of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.
For the interview, the 68-year-old ten-time Grammy winner called 10 minutes early, which is rare in show business. He began to answer questions laconicly and eventually blossomed.
That’s what happens in his impromptu concerts – only he doesn’t start before the scheduled time. He starts the songs and his singers join in. At the Dakota, he is joined by a mini version—just four singers—of his 12-piece Voicestra ensemble.

He never has a brain freeze to start a new play.
“It’s just opening your mouth and singing. You just keep going,” he said. “The most fundamental part of improvisation is movement. Above all, it is the courage to open your mouth and sing and move on. That is the first law of improvisation.”
Anyone who’s seen an improv comedy troupe can attest that, as McFerrin put it, improvisation can be “really risky.” “That often doesn’t work. I may have an idea where to go, but instead of going right, it goes left. Instead of going up, it goes down.”
Improvisational singing requires great concentration and attention to the other singers. At times, McFerrin can seem clueless to audiences.
“Not in a rude way, but I kind of ignore the audience a bit,” hoping to get used to his surroundings. “It can take 10, 15, 25 minutes for me to get centered. Then I invite the audience in at that point.”
Voicestra singer Judi Donaghy Vinar, a native of the Twin Cities, understands that all-consuming focus.
“Bobby has a magical way of attracting the attention of those around him. Just probably by being as focused as he is,” she said. “Whenever I’m with him, I feel like I can focus on another level. And that’s why I can live in the moment, that’s what this is about.”
McFerrin appreciates Vinar’s contributions over the past 17 years.
“She brings a tremendous knowledge of music and the life of a musician and what that can be,” he said.
McFerrin, on the other hand, had to “relearn what it’s like to be on the road. I’ve just been to Europe for three weeks. It took some getting used to again. I forgot to go through security and the things you need to take out of your bags.”
Doesn’t analyze broadcasts
When McFerrin finishes an impromptu performance, he doesn’t analyze it again. In fact, he doesn’t usually remember his performance.
Well, he remembers an improv performance with a certain pianist who didn’t know how to end it.
“He didn’t know I was done. We had set our themes, developed the material and finished it, and this guy just kept playing,” said McFerrin. “So I sat down at the piano and started playing the piano with him. At one point I took my left hand and put it under his right hand and raised his hand in the air. That was the only way I could get him to stop.”
McFerrin also recalled the time in 2001 when the late jazz vocal star Al Jarreau pulled McFerrin out of the audience at Orchestra Hall in downtown Minneapolis to accompany him on his encore.
“I remember that. We did [Chick Corea’s] ‘Spain,'” McFerrin said of his recording pal Jarreau. “We shared an interesting fact. His birthday and mine were a day apart, and our two wives were born on the same day in the same year.”
Ah, McFerrin warmed up for the interview.
Unfortunately, he cannot keep up with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, although he knows that it no longer has a single artistic director.
“They didn’t invite me back, which is fine because they went in a different direction,” he said matter-of-factly, without a hint of hurt. “We haven’t spoken to each other since I left. I would like to see them live.”
He thanks the SPCO for teaching him how to conduct, although he no longer conducts.
“It was a wonderful time in my life. I really enjoyed it,” he recalls. “I could never call myself a conductor. I was a singer conducting. I loved conducting Mozart more than any other composer.”
These days, McFerrin collaborates with a cappella voicestra to do improvisations, or his band (and daughter) offer material from his 2013 album of spirituals, Spirityouall.
He is pleased to report on his three children who spent some formative years in the Twin Cities, two attending Breck and one at St. Paul Academy.
Taylor McFerrin is a touring musician and recording artist who is in the band of rising jazz star Robert Glasper. Jevon McFerrin is an understudy for the lead in Broadway’s Hamilton, and the proud dad has spotted him in the role on a number of occasions. Madison McFerrin is a singer-songwriter who sometimes performs with her father and has just returned from working in Brazil.
Music is his gift
Born in New York and raised in Los Angeles, McFerrin now calls Philadelphia home.
“I live in the forest,” he says. “No one can find me.”
He doesn’t get out much. He goes to the gym twice a week for hour-long sessions with a trainer. When he listens to music at home, it’s mostly classical, preferably Rachmaninoff. On long car journeys he decides to join the jazz group The Yellowjackets. He also likes a lesser-known jazz outfit, Snarky Puppy.
Music, he says, is his gift. “I have to do it. I can’t help myself.”
The son of an operatic baritone father and a singer mother, McFerrin tried to develop his own style of vocal improvisation and waited until he was 32 to make his recording debut in 1982 with pop and jazz songs. His second album was entirely solo, with only his voice and his own vocal percussion interpreting pop and jazz melodies.
McFerrin’s big commercial break came in 1988 with his fourth studio album, Simple Pleasures, which included covers of songs by Buddy Miles, Cream and the Beatles, as well as a breezy, reggae-tinged original with a smug accent called Don’t Worry, Be Happy. contains .” This tune became the first a cappella song to reach #1 on the Billboard pop chart and won the Grammys for Song and Record of the Year.
