Jon Scheyer – Head Coach – Men’s Basketball Coaches

Follow @JonScheyer

Former Duke All-American and two-time team captain Jon Scheyer was named the 20th head coach in legendary Duke University basketball history on June 4, 2021. He succeeded Hall of Fame head coach Mike Krzyzewski, who announced his retirement plan in June 2021 following the 2021-22 season.

Scheyer, who will be entering his first season as head coach in 2022/23, has been with Krzyzewski since the 2013/14 season. His role with the Blue Devils was elevated from special assistant to assistant coach after the 2017-18 campaign to his previous promotion to associate head coach.

Scheyer, 34, is a coaching prodigy who is considered one of the best assistant coaches in college basketball. He is among the youngest head coaches in Division I men’s basketball and the youngest at a power conference institution.

Scheyer, who helped the Blue Devils win two ACC championships and the 2010 NCAA title as a player from 2007-10, has helped Duke record 219-62 (.779), one national championship (2015), two Finals Fours (2015, 2022) and two ACC Tournament Crowns (2017, 2019) while serving as an assistant or associate head coach.

A Northbrook, Illinois native since joining the workforce, he has been instrumental in the recruitment and development of several young Duke stars. Scheyer is gearing up for his first season as head coach and has already landed what is expected to be the national No. 1 recruiting bracket for the 2022-23 campaign.

He helped mentor Tyus Jones in Duke’s 2015 national title season as the Blue Devils finished the year in third place nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency. Jones was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player in Indianapolis and was a first-round pick in the 2015 NBA Draft after just one college season.

In 2017, Scheyer helped propel Luke Kennard to a consensus All-American after a breakout sophomore season in which he finished second in the ACC in goals scored and three-point field goal percentage to shape. He also helped develop Frank Jackson into one of the most dynamic young guards in the country during the 2016-17 campaign.

Kennard and Jackson were drafted 12th and 31st overall, respectively, in the 2017 NBA Draft.

After ending his career in 2018 as the 12th-best scorer in Duke history with 1,996 points, Grayson Allen was drafted in the first round by the Utah Jazz. Allen came to Scheyer as two of only five Blue Devils in history with 1,900 or more points, 400 or more rebounds, and 400 or more assists (Grant Hill, Danny Ferry, Johnny Dawkins).

The 2019 campaign saw Tyus’ brother Tre enjoy a breakthrough year as a freshman by setting the program’s single-season assists-to-gross ratio record (3.62) while establishing himself as one of the top defensive players in the nation. Jones’ classmate, RJ Barrett, finished his remarkable first-team season at Duke as a first-team consensus All-American, USA Today National Player of the Year, and the No. 3 overall pick in the NBA draft.

Barrett broke a variety of program and ACC records, including both the Duke and Conference freshman records with 860 points. His 860 points was matched only by J.J. Redick’s 964 points as a senior in 2006. Barrett averaged 22.6 points and was the only major conference player in 2018-19 to average 13+ points in every game of the season.

Under Scheyer’s stewardship, Tre Jones turned his phenomenal season as a freshman into a highly decorated sophomore campaign that ended with him being the 2020 ACC Player of the Year, ACC Defensive Player of the Year and All-American. After two seasons as a starting point guard, Jones declared for the NBA draft, leaving Duke as the program’s career-record holder for assists-to-turnover ratio (2.88) and third for assists-per-game (5.8).

During the 2021-22 season, Scheyer worked closely with ACC Freshman of the Year and consensus All-American second-team Paolo Banchero. He also helped lead second-team All-ACC pick Wendell Moore Jr. to present himself as one of the most complete players in the nation. Moore capped his season by winning the Julius Erving Award for the nation’s top small forward.

Scheyer was one of the most versatile players in Duke history, ending his playing career as the only player in school history to have at least 2,000 points, 500 rebounds, 400 assists, 250 three-point field goals, and 200 steals. He averaged 14.4 points per game while scoring 114 goals in double digits (the sixth-most in Duke history) and leading the Blue Devils to a 115-29 (.799) record.

A two-time team captain, Scheyer has 2,077 career points and still ranks 10th on Duke’s all-time scorer list. He ranks third in Duke history for free throws (608), fourth for free throw percentage (.861) and three-point field goals made (297), and sixth for Free throw attempts (706). He played in 144 consecutive games, making it the second-longest streak in Duke history.

As a senior in 2010, Scheyer averaged 18.2 points, 4.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game from the point guard position to lead Duke to a 35-5 record and his fourth national championship. In his senior season, he was a consensus second-team All-American and a first-team All-ACC pick, having started all 40 contests and scoring double-digit goals in all but two games that year.

Scheyer was named ACC Tournament MVP as a junior in 2009, averaging 21.7 points and 4.0 rebounds as Duke took home the title.

He was a McDonald’s and Parade All-American in 2006 as a senior at Glenbrook North High School. Already recognized as an elite scorer, his legend grew when he scored 21 points in 75 seconds at the Proviso West Holiday Tournament as a senior. He finished his career as the fourth-highest scoring player in Illinois high school basketball history with 3,034 points. He is the only player in Illinois history to rank in the state’s career top 10 in points, assists and steals.

A two-time Gatorade Illinois Player of the Year, Scheyer was named to the 2007 100 Legends of Illinois Basketball.

After graduating from Duke in 2010, Scheyer played professionally with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the NBA D League and abroad with Maccabi Tel Aviv and Gran Canaria.

Scheyer married the former Marcelle Provencial in May 2017. The couple have two young children, a girl named Noa born in January 2018 and a boy named Jett born in August 2019. They have a third child on the way.

On Wednesday, June 2, 2021, Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski announced that he would be stepping down after the 2021-22 season. Coach K is the most successful coach in the history of Division I men’s basketball, having guided the Blue Devils to five national championships in his 41 seasons there.

“Duke University has been a central part of my life for more than a decade and I could not wish for a better place to continue my career,” Scheyer said in a statement. “It’s absolutely humiliating.”

Scheyer was to spend the season as a waiting coach before taking over thereafter. However, we caught an early glimpse of him at the helm as he refereed Duke’s final game against Wake Forest.

It was announced earlier in the day that Coach K would miss the game due to illness. As a result, Scheyer took over the duties of head coach. And it was going well, Duke winning 76-64 against a Wake Forest team that was 10-0 at home this season.

It was actually Scheyer’s second game ever as head coach. He stepped in for Krzyzewski against Boston College in January 2021 while Coach K was in quarantine.
