Josef Newgarden

American racing driver

Josef Nicolai Newgarden[1] (born December 22, 1990)[2][3] is an American racing driver who competes full-time for Team Penske in the IndyCar Series. He is the 2017 and 2019 IndyCar Series Champion and the 2011 Indy Lights Champion.

Career [edit]

Karting [ edit ]

Newgarden’s first racing vehicle was a scooter purchased from a skate shop in Hendersonville, Tennessee. In 2001, Newgarden took part in events across the country. After a year his father bought a kart.[4]

When he was 13, he and his family ventured far outside of Tennessee to find a competitive karting environment. This led Newgarden to a kart racing facility in New Castle, Indiana, recently opened by IndyCar driver Mark Dismore. To remain efficient with funding, Newgarden would focus on local and regional championships rather than competing at the national level.

In his first year of karting (2005), Newgarden finished 2nd and 3rd in the Kart Racers of America (KRA) Junior Can Championship. That year he also competed in the TAG World Championships in the junior division and secured the title.

In 2006 he had his most successful year in karting, securing two championships in the KRA Junior Can Division and repeating himself as TAG World Champion in the Junior Division.

He competed in junior car racing in 2007 but later returned to karting several times and competed in the highly competitive Robo-Pong 200 at New Castle Motorsports Park several times over the next few years. He would win the 200 mile endurance race twice, both achievements having come with members of the Dismore family as his teammates (Mark Dismore Sr. in 2011 and Mark Dismore Jr. in 2013).

Early formula car racing [ edit ]

Skip barber [ edit ]

Newgarden began his open wheel car career in the Skip Barber Racing School series in 2006. He finished second in the Southern Regional Series with three wins and an additional seven podiums. He next competed in the 2007 BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National Presented by Mazda Championship and finished sixth with two wins. Newgarden stayed in the series in 2008, improving to second place with three wins.[8]

Formula Ford[ edit ]

Newgarden wins the 2008 Formula Ford Festival

After the 2008 season, Newgarden was selected for the Team USA scholarship to compete in the Formula Ford Festival and the Walter Hayes Trophy. He would secure the Formula Ford Festival title, becoming the only American to ever do so.

At the Walter Hayes Trophy event, Newgarden would win all qualifying races leading up to the main event. He would also start the event from pole position. Unfortunately, in the middle of a rain-plagued race, Newgarden fell off the lead and finished 6th.

In 2009 he moved to England to compete in the British Formula Ford Championship and start his European career. He would finish second in 2009, leading the streak in overall wins and amassing 550 points.[9]

Formula Palmer Audi[ edit ]

Newgarden competed in the opening round of the 2009 Formula Palmer Audi season at Brands Hatch, taking two wins and a fourth in the third race.

GP3 Series [ edit ]

Newgarden competes in the 2010 GP3 series

In 2010, Newgarden competed with Carlin Motorsport in the newly formed 2010 GP3 Series. 2010 would end in Josef’s most disappointing championship position of his young career, finishing 18th in points. The highlights of the season were a pole position at the Hockenheimring and the best fifth place at the season finale in Monza.

Indy Lights[edit]

Newgarden wins the Indy Lights Championship

In early 2011, Newgarden would return home to the United States to compete with Sam Schmidt Motorsports in the Indy Lights Series. He won his first Indy Lights race in the season opener on the streets of St. Petersburg.[13] He followed his inaugural victory at St. Petersburg with four more wins and ten podiums in thirteen races in 2011[14], which secured him the points’ championship with one race to go.[15] In New Hampshire, the 11th race of 2011, Newgarden lapped the entire field and kept winning. He was the first Indy Lights rider to do so since Thiago Medeiros in March 2004.[16] Josef would also lead the rookie win streak for the 2011 season.

IndyCar[ edit ]

2012-2014: Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing[edit]

On December 7, 2011, Newgarden was announced as the driver for Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing. It’s fairly rare at IndyCar for a rookie driver to be offered a multi-year contract, but Fisher and her team saw promise at Newgarden; SFH was considered to be the smallest team in the series and Newgarden certainly faced a major challenge in making his first foray into professional motorsport. He competed in IndyCar with Fisher’s team from 2012-2014 and steadily progressed and improved with each weekend. He would claim his first podium at the 2013 race in Baltimore. 2014 would be his standout year with SFHR, nearly securing wins at both Long Beach and Mid-Ohio and taking his second career podium at Iowa Speedway.[17]

2015: CFH Racing [ edit ]

During his fourth full season in IndyCar, Newgarden raced under the merged team of Sarah Fisher and Ed Carpenter. Under this new team banner, Newgarden started 2015 strong, finishing 12th in St. Petersburg and improving his position with every race.

On the fourth race weekend of the 2015 season at Barber Motorsports Park, Newgarden earned his first win in the Indycar Series at the 2015 Honda Indy Grand Prix in Alabama, moving up from 5th to 2nd on the first lap of the race and leading the most laps on the way to a 2.2 second win.[19]

As proof that his win wasn’t lucky, he won later in the season at the 2015 Honda Indy Toronto [20] and finished the 2015 season in 7th place overall with 431 points, an IndyCar personal best.

2016: Ed Carpenter Racing[edit]

Sarah Fisher retired from IndyCar after the 2015 season and left Newgarden to drive for the reformed Ed Carpenter Racing. Newgarden started the 2016 season strong with a podium finish at the 2016 Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park. In qualifying for the 2016 Indy 500, he narrowly missed pole position and started from the middle of the front row. He finished the 100th run of the Indy 500 in a strong 3rd place.[21]

At the 2016 Firestone 600 at Texas Motor Speedway, Newgarden hit the wall hard and broke both his hand and collarbone.[22] Remarkably, he returned to the car two weeks later and worked his way up to a top 10 finish at the 2016 Kohler Grand Prix at Road America.[23]

Just 28 days after his crash in Texas, Newgarden won the 2016 Iowa Corn 300 in dominating fashion, leading 282 of 300 laps.[24] A remarkable feat with a broken hand and shoulder.

At IndyCar’s return to the Watkins Glen International, the 2016 Glen Grand Prix, Newgarden claimed another podium, finishing second.[25] After placing 6th at the 2016 GoPro Grand Prix in Sonoma[26], he ended the season fourth overall in the season standings. As a testament to their hard work and success, Newgarden and ECR would finish the season as the tallest non-team Penske car in the series, quite an achievement for a small team.

2017–present: Team Penske [ edit ]

On September 29, 2016, ECR owner Ed Carpenter confirmed that Newgarden would not be back with the team for 2017. Newgarden joined Team Penske for the 2017 season,[28] which the team officially announced on October 5.[29]

Newgarden won his first race with Team Penske on Round 3 of the 2017 season at Barber Motorsports Park; claiming victory after a duel with Scott Dixon in the final rounds.[30] Newgarden moved up the IndyCar points lead after back-to-back wins in Toronto and Mid Ohio.[31]

At Gateway, Newgarden held off his teammates and Scott Dixon to take his fourth straight win of the season, but not without controversy as Newgarden entered Turn 1 late in the race under teammate Simon Pagenaud. Both continued after a puncture, but when Pagenaud nearly hit the wall he wasn’t happy with his teammate’s move. The following week at Watkins Glen, Newgarden held a sizable points advantage over second-placed Dixon. Coming back onto track with cold tires from a pit stop on green, he lost control of the car when Sébastien Bourdais touched him, damaging the suspension. Newgarden left the Glen by three points, later four points as he won pole for Sonoma and set a course record. Newgarden needed to finish 4th or higher regardless of Pagenaud’s result, and he finished second to win his first title. Newgarden became the first American-born driver to win the Astor Cup since Ryan Hunter-Reay in 2012.

Newgarden won the opening race of the 2019 season in St. Petersburg followed by victories in Detroit, Texas and Iowa. He topped the points table after every race, with the exception of the Indy 500, where Team Penske teammate Simon Pagenaud led from pole position. Newgarden won his second IndyCar title at Laguna Seca by just 25 points.[33]

Newgarden slowly started his second title defense of 2020, a season cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite finishing third in the Texas opener, he found himself in an early season crisis that put him in a hole to match Scott Dixon. He produced a string of wins and podiums mid-season and towards the end of the stretch that set him up for a title-winning final-lap showdown with Dixon in St. Petersburg. Newgarden could only win the championship if he won the race and Dixon either retired or did not finish better than ninth. During the race, Newgarden passed Pato O’Ward on the final laps after a restart and retained the lead for his second consecutive win at St Petersburg, but was unable to defend his title as Dixon finished third.

2021 would be a year of ups and downs for Newgarden and Team Penske. Despite leading four pole positions in one season, he would not claim a win until round ten of the season at Mid Ohio.[34] The win was Newgarden’s nineteenth in IndyCar, making him the most successful American driver currently active in the series. Newgarden picked up a second win at Gateway. Going into the final race of the season at Long Beach, Newgarden was one of just three drivers mathematically contending for the title alongside Alex Palou and Pato O’Ward.[35] Newgarden finished second in the race, taking second place in the championship for the second year running.

Newgarden and Team Penske would start 2022 in dominant fashion, winning two of the season’s three opening races in Texas and Long Beach, respectively. Newgarden won in Texas, passing teammate Scott McLaughlin for the lead down the final stretch of the final lap as McLaughlin struggled with lapped traffic. Newgarden won the following race at Long Beach by holding off Romain Grosjean and Alex Palou on the final laps until a final lap warning was issued which ended the green flag running and the race. Newgarden held off Marcus Ericsson and Alexander Rossi in a late restart to earn a payback win at Road America after his heartbreaking loss the year before, and with the win he claimed a $1m bonus for winning on an oval, a road course and a road course in the same season.

Other races[ edit ]

Josef competed in the 2018 Race of Champions in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia[41] and the 2019 Race of Champions at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City, Mexico[42], both times for Team USA.

On February 23, 2022, it was announced that Josef would be a guest driver at Tony Stewart’s Superstar Racing Experience at the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway in Josef’s hometown of Nashville.

Personal life[edit]

Newgarden was born in Nashville, Tennessee, to Joey and Tina Newgarden, who had moved from New York with the family’s photography business in the 1980s.[4] Josef is half Danish through his mother.[4] He credits watching races on television at a young age with his father, who was an avid fan of NASCAR, IndyCar and Formula 1, as what got him into the sport.

Newgarden grew up in Hendersonville, Tennessee and attended Pope John Paul II High School, where he was friends with NFL Pro Bowl wide receiver Golden Tate and a former classmate. He was also a former classmate of NASCAR driver Josh Berry in 7th and 8th grade.

Before he started racing, Newgarden played baseball, soccer, and basketball.

On October 7, 2018, Newgarden announced that he and longtime girlfriend Ashley Welch had become engaged during a trip to Japan.[45] They married in Nashville in the fall of 2019.

On April 20, 2022, Newgarden’s wife Ashley gave birth to their first child, Kota Nicolai Newgarden.[46]

Media appearances[ edit ]

Along with fellow racers Tony Kanaan and Helio Castroneves, he competed in the 2016 Indianapolis round of American Ninja Warrior Season 8.[47]

Newgarden is the rider ambassador for the SeriousFun Children’s Network, a charity started by actor and race team owner Paul Newman. Newgarden is also a talented table tennis player. He hosts an annual celebrity tournament in May to raise funds for the Serious Fun Children’s Network. In 2019, the tournament raised over $100,000 for the charity.[49]

Newgarden is an avid gamer and is currently a brand ambassador for the Microsoft title Forza Motorsport. His voice is featured in the game and he appears frequently in Forza content.[50]
