Young Dolph Murder Suspect Justin Johnson Sentenced To Prison For Prior Federal Violation

Justin Johnson, also known as aspiring rapper Straight Drop, was in custody as one of three murder suspects allegedly involved in Young Dolph’s death and was reportedly sentenced to two years in prison for a previous federal offense. According to ActionNews5 on Tuesday, April 12, Johnson, 23, pleaded guilty to violating the terms of his supervised release related to a previous gun charge. Violations include “not having regular employment, lack of mandatory drug testing and therapy, failure to obtain permission before leaving jurisdiction, and arrest.”

Young Dolph was shot dead in November 2021 while picking up baked goods from Makeda’s Homemade Cookies in his hometown of Memphis. Johnson and Smith were arrested by US Marshals in Indiana. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, US Marshals and the Memphis Police Department have been on a statewide manhunt for Johnson for less than a week.

Shundale Barnett, 27, was listed as the third suspect in the death and was arrested just days later. US Marshal Tyreece Miller revealed during a news conference that Barnett was accused of being an “after-the-fact accomplice” to a first-degree homicide, saying at the time: “It’s a big deal. We’re proud of the work everyone you see standing up here has done, and even some you don’t see. There are many unseen heroes involved in the case… I think we are the cream of the crop. We are delivering results and today’s announcement shows that.”

Messages on Young Dolph murder surface on suspect’s alleged Instagram account

News that appears to be related to the murder of rapper Young Dolph surfaced Saturday afternoon on the Instagram account of a man who police say is wanted in connection with the rapper’s killing.

Justin Johnson is wanted for allegedly shooting and killing rapper Young Dolph at a Memphis bakery on November 17, Memphis police say.

It has been reported by local media, including Memphis ABC affiliate WATN, that Johnson is a locally well known rapper, who goes by the stage name Straight Drop.

The Memphis Police Department issued a first-degree murder warrant for 23-year-old Johnson on Wednesday.

“Turning Myself In Monday @201 I’m Innocent,” read a message posted to an Instagram Story on Straight Drop’s popular Instagram account (@straightdroppp). “I’ll be back before you can blink.”

It’s unclear who posted the messages and if Johnson has access to the account.

Justin Johnson, 23, is pictured in a photo released Jan. 5, 2022 by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, saying he is wanted and should be considered armed and dangerous. TBI

It’s also unclear what “201” means, but the address of the Shelby County, Tennessee Men’s Prison is 201 Poplar Avenue in downtown Memphis.

When asked about the news Saturday afternoon, a spokesman for the Memphis Police Department declined to comment. A spokesman for the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office directed ABC News’ inquiry into the case to the U.S. Marshals Service, but a request for comment was not immediately answered.

Video of an interview with WATN’s Shelby County Judge Christopher Craft was also shared on Straight Drop’s Instagram Stories and in a new post.

In the video, the judge who oversaw the trial discusses why Johnson was given a second chance after a 2017 shooting.

According to Shelby County court records reviewed by WATN, Johnson, then 18, shot and killed three people in Billy Hardwick Bowling Alley in 2017 — wounding two of them.

Craft told WATN that Johnson had no records at the time, which is why he was given a second chance.

“When he first used a gun, we gave him some leeway because he was immediately cooperative and would do anything,” Craft said.

Johnson was sentenced to five years in prison but paroled after several months, Craft said. His probation was later revoked after Johnson faced a federal gun charge, for which he spent extra time in prison.

“Next time post the REAL … BS a– blogs,” said a message posted from Straight Drop’s account, along with video of Craft discussing Johnson’s good behavior that led to his parole got.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons told ABC News Friday that Johnson was convicted in Tennessee’s Western District and committed to the custody of the Bureau of Prisons on March 11, 2019 and released on May 25, 2021 via Good Conduct Time Release.

Johnson, who has a history of violence according to court documents, is wanted by police in connection with a number of alleged charges including first-degree murder, criminal attempted murder in the first degree and property theft, the Memphis Police Department said Wednesday.

Asked by ABC News earlier this week to verify if Straight Drop’s well-known Instagram account, which is unverified and has over 50,000 followers, belongs to Johnson, Memphis police declined to comment.

The account has gained thousands of followers since the news broke on Saturday afternoon. According to Instagram data history, the Instagram account was previously registered under the username “justintjohnson123”.

The phone number and email address linked to the Instagram account are linked to Johnson, according to records verified by ABC News, and Straight Drop’s verified Spotify account mentions Justin Johnson in the credits of several songs.

Straight Drop released a song called “Stepped On” featuring Big Homiie G on his YouTube page on Nov. 22 — five days after Dolph’s death. The rapper shared a clip of the song on his well-known Instagram account and the YouTube -Video linked in his profile.

In the video, Straight Drop appears to be wearing a necklace with the acronym “PRE” similar to those worn by Dolph and artists associated with Dolph’s Paper Route Empire label, which he founded in 2010.

This caused some confusion among fans as to Straight Drop’s possible connection to the label. Whether he was in a relationship with the late rapper or other PRE artists is unclear and ABC News has reached out to a representative for Dolph for comment.

According to the U.S. Marshal’s Service had the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee has received an outstanding warrant for a gun crime violation of federally supervised release, and both cases are being resolved by the U.S. Marshals Two Rivers Violent Fugitive investigate task force.

Surveillance video released by police appears to show two suspects at the scene of the shooting, but MPD has not released information on the identity of a second potential suspect.

Law enforcement officials urged the public to share information about Johnson’s whereabouts, saying the suspect is a fugitive who “has ties to organized criminal gangs” and “should be considered armed and dangerous.”

“This is just the beginning,” Dolph’s longtime partner Mia Jaye said in a statement posted to Instagram after law enforcement announced the alleged suspect. “We continue to pray that all attacks, conspiracies and schemes made against Adolph’s life will be uncovered and that justice will be diligently served.”

Young Dolph, real name Adolph Robert Thornton Jr., was shot and killed on November 17 in Memphis while visiting Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies, a South Memphis bakery that the rapper is known to frequent. He was 36 and shared two young children with Jaye, Tre and Ari, who both paid emotional tributes to their father at a memorial service in Memphis last month.

Young Dolph’s aunt, Rita Myers, told Rolling Stone in an interview on Wednesday that the family was devastated by the death of her nephew.

“This news doesn’t mark closure for us because [Johnson] is not in custody and we still don’t have all the facts,” she said. “It’s still the same for us. This news only made me feel worse. I thought it would make me feel better, but it didn’t. All I know is that anyone who could go and take the life of another person for no reason is someone with hatred at heart, a person who doesn’t respect life, a person who doesn’t care.”

A spokesman for MPD told ABC News there was no news on the case as of Friday morning.

Johnson is 5ft 8, 190lbs tall and has black hair and brown eyes, police said. A combined reward of up to $15,000 will be awarded by MPD, the U.S. Marshals Service and Crime Stoppers for information leading to his arrest.

The US Marshals Service on Wednesday identified Johnson as a suspect in the killing of 36-year-old Adolph Thornton Jr., better known as Young Dolph.

Police have issued an arrest warrant for Johnson on charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and theft of property. He also has a warrant out for violating federally supervised release. A $15,000 reward is being offered for Johnson’s capture.

Some sources have reported that Johnson is a Memphis rapper who goes by the name “Straight Drop.” When we asked a law enforcement source for confirmation, they directed us to Straight Droppp’s Instagram page.

Many fans are also making this connection, noting that Straight Droppp filmed a video outside of what they believe is the same location outside of an abandoned house where a white Mercedes was discovered, which is described as a getaway vehicle in Young Dolph’s death is equivalent to.

This video was posted online after Young Dolph’s death.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons said Johnson was convicted in Tennessee’s Western District and served time in prison for good behavior from March 11, 2019 until his release from a Louisiana facility on May 25, 2021.

Court records show that an 18-year-old Johnson was involved in a January 2017 shooting that injured three people at Billy Hardwick’s All-Star Lanes in East Memphis. Police said a fight broke out at the bowling alley just before midnight and Johnson took an assault rifle from outside and fired into a crowd, hitting three people before fleeing with his girlfriend.

A month later, police said they found Johnson in a Parkway Village home with marijuana, an assault rifle and active warrants for the January shooting. A police report listed Johnson as a gang member.

In May 2017, according to court records, Johnson pleaded guilty to multiple counts of aggravated assault.

In May 2018, police said Johnson, 20, drove a Dodge Charger into a gated apartment complex near the Memphis airport and refused to leave. Police say they found a loaded gun and marijuana in the car.

Johnson faced drug and gun charges in that case, but Shelby County court records show the charges were dropped.

An innocent bystander injured in the 2017 bowling alley shooting said Thursday he was shocked Johnson was free. The man, whose name we do not give, was not seriously hurt, but his friend was and he believes Johnson should be held accountable.

“We just sat at the counter and watched,” he recalls. “It took a long time for me to want to go out and do anything after that for a while.”

If you have any information regarding Johnson’s whereabouts, you are urged to contact the U.S. Call Marshals at (901)-275-4562, (901)-601-1575, or (731)-571-0280.
