Incoming McIntire Student, UVA Basketball Player Kadin Shedrick Making Up for Lost Time

Academically he shone in his sophomore year at the University of Virginia as in his first. However, from a basketball perspective, 2020-2021 has been a year that Kadin Shedrick is dying to get behind.
A prolonged battle with mononucleosis limited the 6-foot-11 shedrick to 11 appearances for the Cavaliers in 2020-2021. Then, shortly after the end of the season, he contracted COVID-19.
“It was discouraging,” Shedrick said ahead of a recent summer practice session at the John Paul Jones Arena.
After his 2019-2020 redshirting, the 6-foot-11 shedrick was excited to officially kick off his collegiate career, and the Cavaliers’ staff were equally excited.
“He was headed in the right direction,” said Mike Curtis, the team’s strength and conditioning coach.
Shedrick’s debut at the John Paul Jones Arena offered a tantalizing glimpse of his potential. In a win against Saint Francis (PA) on December 1, he contributed 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench.
“He’s long and he’s very active and he’s consistent,” UVA head coach Tony Bennett said after the game. “He plays hard on the glass and he works.”
However, in early January, Shedrick’s mono reappeared and his season was effectively over. He played the rest of the way another 13 minutes.
“I get it,” Shedrick said of his reduced role. “I just didn’t feel like I was physically where I needed to be. I was lighter than before and I was still a bit tired.”
In practice, the coaches put Shedrick in the green team, the group responsible for preparing UVA regulars for upcoming opponents. “So my goal was to help the guys get to where we all wanted to be and support them in any way I could and continue to work on my game for next season,” Shedrick said.
Summing up his struggle to stay healthy, Shedrick said: “It was just really hard.”
This made him more determined to succeed, and after Shedrick received clearance to resume training in the spring, he attacked his training. He impressed this summer on a UVA team with just two traditional postal players: Shedrick and 7-foot Francisco Caffaro.
Caffaro, who is playing for Argentina at the Tokyo Olympics, was away from Charlottesville for most of the summer and that means longer work for Shedrick, who is back at 100% for the first time since last autumn.
“The best thing I’ve ever felt,” he said.
“So far so good,” said associate head coach Jason Williford. “He looks good; he works hard. He’s an important piece.”
Shedrick, who is from Holly Springs, NC about 20 miles southwest of Raleigh, weighed 208 pounds when he enrolled at UVA in June 2019. Last fall he was at 222. However, his first fight with Mono knocked him down to 198, and he never regained all the weight or strength he lost.
“It was unfortunate,” Williford said. “I know it was frustrating for him. But as long as he keeps working and trusting the process, I think good things are in store for him.”
As he enters his third year at UVA, Shedrick weighs nearly 235 pounds and is physically not far from where Curtis expected him to be at this stage in his career. Shedrick finished the spring semester at home in North Carolina and diligently lifted weights at a local gym after recovering from COVID-19.
He’s gained about 25 pounds since the season ended. “It was just a ton to eat and a ton to lift,” Shedrick said.
Not every weight is a good weight, but Curtis was thrilled with Shedrick’s offseason gains.
“He needs to get stronger,” Curtis said. “He still needs to develop a little bit more of an engine, but he’s accomplished some of the things that we thought were more KPI, key performance indicators, for him, just from a crowd perspective.”
Shedrick would have been through if he hadn’t fallen ill last year, Curtis conceded, “but to his credit, when [UVA’s players] were going home, he texted me about his weight gain, his diet and all of that.” things was going on. He was much more compliant and sticking to strategy than ever.
“I think sometimes you get to a point where you think and you see that there’s an opportunity and some of those things that you ignore and don’t pay as much attention to in the conversations with coaches and people who are trying to prepare you, they [beat home]. It finally dawns on you: I need to do these things, and I need to adopt these behaviors, that will allow me to be successful. And I think he’s finally gotten to that point because he’s been very, very diligent. You can see that he has changed his mentality, which is reflected in what you see now from the standpoint of physical presence.
The next step for him, Shedrick said, “is to keep working on a tall engine. That was Coach Curtis’ most important message to me: keep pushing me to keep going. Just dominate every possession on the pitch.”
“Kadin has the physical tools to be a very impactful player, but if he can’t sustain and repeat that over a 40-minute period, he’s going to be very limited. Because what I’ve noticed is that when he hits that fatigue limit, he immediately stops being an effective player,” Curtis said. “That includes the mentality. Part of it is up to me to develop some of those physiological things that he needs, just a more robust aerobic system and things like that. But you can’t succumb to these things mentally as well and I think we have to be able to develop both the mental approach and physiologically to build a bigger engine and these things have to come together in such a way that he can dominate games, no matter how long he’s out there. Because he has the tools to do it, and we’ve seen flashes of it. But those flashes last five, six minutes, eight minutes, and then he gets tired and just gives in to the tiredness and whatever else is going on.”
From a team that won the ACC regular-season title, the Wahoos lost six of their top eight scorers, including 7-foot-1 Jay Huff, 6-foot-9 Trey Murphy III, 6-foot-8 Sam Hauser and 6 -Foot-8 Justin McKoy. Shedrick knows he has an opportunity to play a significant role in 2021-2022.
“For me it’s just about staying healthy so I can be available to the team,” he said. “I just have to be reliable this year.”
He played a total of 88 minutes last season. Nine of his teammates played more. Still, Shedrick said: “I think the games that I got experience in helped a lot because at the beginning I was a little bit nervous – first college game, this and that – but I’ve been through it a little bit now. Although I wasn’t fully submerged, I did get my feet in the water. I know what to expect. I played against some physical guys.”
Working primarily with the Cavaliers’ big men, Williford has continued to tutor Shedrick this summer. But Shedrick also learns from Isaiah Wilkins, who established himself as a force in Bennett’s pack line defense during his UVA career. Wilkins recently returned to his alma mater to pursue a master’s degree and rejoined the program as a research assistant.
“It was great to have him here,” said Shedrick, who recalls watching Wilkins play for the Hoos. “I am very grateful that he is here. He helps me with things I can do in the mail, on defense and everything.”
Shedrick has one sibling, Kari, a freshman at Providence College, where she will play on the softball team. They grew up in a household where their parents, Dominic and Cindy Shedrick, emphasized the importance of education.
“That was something they really valued when my sister and I were younger,” Shedrick recalled. “They pushed us as hard in the classroom as they did in sports: me, basketball; you, softball. I got my drive from my parents in the classroom.”
Shedrick, who also had scholarship offers from schools like Louisville, Wake Forest, Florida, Wisconsin, Xavier, and Indiana, chose Virginia in part because of what it could offer him academically.
“That excited me,” he said. “Great [basketball] program, great academics; It’s the best of both worlds. If basketball isn’t part of my future, I’ll always have a UVA degree.”
Led by the team’s former academic advisor, T.J. Grams, Shedrick, followed an academic path in 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 that helped him gain admission to UVA’s prestigious McIntire School of Commerce. Shedrick is the first male basketball player to join McIntire as head coach during Bennett’s tenure.
Shedrick knows balancing his McIntire group work with his basketball commitments will be a challenge, “but I’m looking forward to it. Having to be the first player under Coach Bennett to go through this, I’m a little worried about the balance, but I think it’ll all work out. I look forward to the challenge.”
